I'm with Luke on this. Let's show ourselves as nice upright bass-players :-) and not overstep the Internet bullying mark eh. CB
yes. even though I don't play upright -
Mmm I am sure there was another comment about Edinburgh here a moment ago! Anyway - Yorkshire is closer and I could go that way to Edinburgh (given my direction finding abilities Bristol is near to Edinburgh!) Quick word of advice when you move ...... don't put a bass bridge in a box ..... now where is it?
ah sorted, it's a great plan! that's one problem sorted then! Next problem my lack of funds -
Oh yeah baby - according to the part numbers on the pick ups they are the USA ones. I knew that it depended upon which non-export it was and was quite happy when I discovered the USA ones were fitted and then even more impressed when the Nordys were in place. Now to find that bridge .....
you know you are in a rare bunch of people who actually bother to look and find out what range their bass is in! kudos to you the amount of people who have this "it's japanese so therefore american pickups" drives me mad. As I just said in another post I would be getting a train to manchester if I had the money. But I don't and your GAS is cured. -
Cheers for all your replies. I like the idea of trying basses out of my price range then buying it second hand. So everyone is in agreement that if a guitar is the same model it should sound the same second hand baring any damage. Wicked I will now start browsing the selling section of this forum. @Chris_b lol yeah I just keep saying for life to justify the cost to my self. There will always be bass gear you crave no matter what you have.
similar, It will never be identical- fenders esp are very variable. There's a fender japanese jazz with nordstrand pickups for about £650 on there at the mo that I would buy if I had the money
Yes,but he does too many things to be a serious one...(like pickup winding etc...) What i think he really did was finding out that the amp seemed "ok",maybe didn't open at all,and just put new rubbers at the underside.(it had no scratches then, all pots ok too)... He was offently visiting me before that,i was working as a guitar tech that time, and he was always asking about info for guitar repairs,i happily gave, cause i thought it's just two pros talking their jobs, going you know, friendly, but he used this info to do guitar repairs too, along with the amps...
the cad!

I would imagine Warwick would go for a Audi or something a bit more high end than that
Thats it having left the bass behind means it hasn't been Dishonestly appropriated. I had the locks changed and told to stay away or else I would be done for trespass whilst a lot of stuff was lifted without my knowledge. That wasn't dishonestly appropriated apparently . civil matter take to small claims. Besides that a landlord only has to keep the stuff for so long anyway.
try citizens advice for help, they helped me out no end with some stuff. Sounds like if someone with a bit of legal training got involved it would be a fairly quick thing to work out.
I always say that, yes, you can get by and play in a band with root notes, but technically there's a massive amount more than guitar out there, especially technique-wise.
what really? electric, acoustic, classical, jazz, gipsey/Reinhartness, rock, prog, all that sort of african sounding stuff.... I don't doubt that there is a lot of technique in bass- but some guitar stuff..... I mean I would LOVE to be able to play classical guitar.

It's easier to do the basics I think, so yes. I think it's harder to get to a very good level. A mediocre guitarist can exist... after a certain level a mediocre bass player just drags the whole band down (same as a drummer) and after that point any instrument is going to be years of practice and theory so a bass, guitar, gamalan, violin, piano - it gets to the point it's irrelevant what is easier.

So I started this thread partly cos I was listening too too much jazz bass based funk and thats a tone I can't do. But then was at church, and the fella was playing a jazz.... and I remembered why I like my bass in the mix over what a jazz bass can do. Somepoint I will buy a jazz- but for now I'll be happy with what I've got. I may however try to find a preamp that I can use to tame some of the high mids on my streamer.
But look how much time is spent on here talking about minor aesthetics or furthering daft internet myths and using these factors as excuses to drive a purchase, instead of concentrating on what makes them playable or good to hear from an audience's perspective.
best point I've read on basschat for a long time.
I think that GAS had a different and perhaps more manageable form before the internet. I love your idea of downsizing, I only have one bass and I am completely happy with it, it was my second bass and I was lucky in that I chose the right bass for me and no other bass (other than maybe a vintage version of my lovely Fender Jazz bass) would fit the bill. I paid £475 for it 10 years ago and have recently upgraded the pups to Fralins, it absolutely rocks. I know there are many amazing instruments available now and in many ways they could be argued to be 'superior' to my bass but I love mine so why go mental? I am slightly GASing for an SG bass like Jack Bruce's and an EBS valvedrive to get some tube dirt but I am quite happy really with my one bass and rig. My GAS has only really ever been about getting a certain sound. Guitar wise I am a lot worse, I suppose the different sound you get from different guitars makes it much harder to just have one.. I at least have to have a tele, a strat and a LP, and I wouldn't mind having a hollow body one to play all the Scotty Moore type picking on... and a Tokai Talbo cuz they're cool... and.. and. And I could have at least 5 valve amps given the chance. The internet has certainly fuelled this desire to possess all the beauties but I see it for what it is: materialism. I still think that once I get one guitar and amp sounding the way I want that will do, it worked with the bass so it should work with guitar. Seriously though, if you're not really attached to your basses I say go for it, sell em, try just having one, it's bliss.
i am attatched to them though! the P is amazing- i love it. a jazz version of the same bass aswell would be amazing. but i have a two bass rule- and i also love almost everything about the warwick.... actually in the mix it works so i think it will be fine.

'classic' stingray vs stingray - are they worth it?
Manged to take some pics today of the pre EB neck/headstock and the Classic so that you can see what you get in terms of "better woodwork". I think the Classics do look really good.
pre EB looks far nicer, but then I don't like the look of burl maple -
P's have a habit of doing that!
Yeah, just sometimes a bit of bridge pickup... and that funky tone ahhh I guess sometimes I just don't want the modern piano type notes on the.... baahhh never mind

what brought this about was my wee session playing today. Last week or so saw the P bass get a lot of play time, it's still got 2 year old strings on it but it sounds great like perfect. Well some stuff just needs a bit of back pickup in it. so today got the warwick out. Now at the moment it doesn't have a preamp or controls in it- just the pickups wired straight to the jack socket. Now I love this bass, it weighs nothing, it fits me like a warm glove, the neck is perfect.... and... it's I dunno. I was trying to play stuff and it just sounded wrong, ah I thought, that's because it's a active bass.... and then realised it's got no activeness in it. and I just struck me, I want this thing to sound like a jazz bass, but because of the neck construction and the pickups, and the pickup placement and the very woods it's made of it never will, theres this thing going on in the upper mids, the treble is more open, theres a lot of natural lows... and...so then I start thinking pre amps, and eq, or set up or selling it and getting a jazz bass, and maybe if I did this, or if I did that or.... and I just think that without the net I probably would have shrugged and kept playing the thing and not been dissatisfied. I dunno, funny mood. cheered up when I just got the P bass out again
i saw him use a capo on IoW footage last year or the year before. Never seen a bass player use one before. Forgive my ignorance, but why would you need to?
well the baseline of the song was of a backing track- I couldn't even work out what he was playing
If you can't get on with floating thumb, try this: *YOU TUBE CLIP HERE!* This is pretty much the technique I've used in the last 15 years playing a 5 string. It'll probably be the case that you can use this on a 6 as Adam Nitti does here.
wow that's my technique too! I do it as a lefty playing right-handed I didn't have the control, I push the fingers into the thumb as well but thats my technique- good to see I'm not an utter idiot. I do it on 4 strings mind!
I was going to say ... remember books?
yeah, but you wouldn't have had such a wealth of basses available to you. You might know a fella made a bass cos he took an advert out in some magazine- but you wouldn't be bombarded with all these pictures. I dunno, just been thinking and playing and in a funny funny mood
-
It strikes me that if the internet didn't exist there wouldn't be much in the way of GAS and I was thinking. If I sold every bass I have, and had just a (good) passive jazz bass.... well all the music that I want to play that could do. and wouldn't it be easier that way?
