It's a bit raped looking for me. Apparently it's been in a lab under experimental conditions. You could pick up a pretty decent one for not a whole lot more.

raped awesome yeah true
possible to find/use a different adjective please? -
Maybe so, but what if the singers on those "classic" tunes had preferred keys of E flat or D? No low root notes to use then... consequently a possibly rather thin low end...
e flat you would just move the whole tuning a semi tone. If they insisted on D well.... where do you think the "rock" trend for tight trousers came from? -
You didn't find the mid sweep useful? Not many amps offer something like it. My gripe with the J-Retro is that it colours the sound even when you set it "flat". Flat does not really exist with that preamp (but it does with others), and I really like a passive Jazz sound. But even then, I love the oomph and versatility it gives me. But I could use just the mid sweep module and be happy, to be perfectly honest. I use that a lot.
Eden, SWR, Thunderfunk do, on multiple bands. Isn't the Yamaha East Eq modual essentially a mid sweep too? The mixing desk I use has two, fully sweepable with varying Q too
I just think that sometimes people don't fully think through the reasons for fitting (or not) a pre amp in their bass. I would hazard that unless the controls on your amp are very subtle or the EQ points aren't sympathetic to the bass (in which case you've either got the wrong amp or the wrong bass for you) that the amp should be able to do everything that built in pre amp can and then some. It's far easier to build an effective and musical sounding EQ when you're not constrained with having to fit it into a typical bass guitar and power for a decent length of time off a PP3 battery.
+1 but I do think you often overestimate people's ability to make gear sound good. I think sometimes you hear the idea of the sound realised but wonder how musically that has been achieved. It's fairly easy to suck the life out of bass tone with Eq. I have another question for you but it's pretty OT so will PM you.

it's nice your bass teacher recommends it..... but what for? Does your band need it? It seems to me to be throwing money at a problem that doesn't exist.

would it not be cheaper to buy the parts and make a new one rather than mod this one? -
So, is it Basschat, the times or both (or neither) the reason a lot of us have more than the necessary number of basses? (I would say the necessary being one!)
bit of both, until very recently we were in one of the most prosperous time we've ever had, and at the same time the relative cost of basses has dropped. Basschat then exists where people talk about their basses and talk about the sort of brands that you just wouldn't have in the local music shop 30 years back. Secondhand market puts some of these basses within peoples reach, both financially and practically with a outlet to sell again if needed. I can buy a bass to try and know I can probably sell it on at the same price if I don't get on with it. I think also if you have this massive range available secondhand to try out then the temptation to think that 'your tone' needs a certain bass... when in reality no one in your band can tell. It's not a bad thing, I've had some amazing basses that I just would never have had without basschat.
he seems to be a man of good taste, so it would not be surprising if it were. I love strats and teles, me. I only own three guitars right now. Two are strats (one "standard", a yummy Classic Player series in sonic blue, and the other is a humbucker&FloydRose loaded Richie Sambora signature... please don't laugh at me ). I need to get back to guitar more.
i was playing my guitar yesterday good times

why not just fix the buzzing one you have now? pretty much any head will work with any cab. If I am wrong and something goes pop don't sue me. Ohms is the resistance of the speakers in the cab. An amp might put out 300w with an 8ohm cab, but if you used a 4ohm cab it would have less to push against so you would get more power. why not just fix the one you have?
I've just added a new member to my fold which I have absolutely no intention whatsoever of gigging. It's a fantastic bass, which (after a full setup and a few tweaks here and there) far exceeds my expectations of it... but it's styling is evocative of a genre of music I have no interest in being associated with, plus it has a neck profile that could in theory get me into trouble in a live situation ... it hasn't stopped it being my latest go-to home noodler and muse for new riff ideas though.
let me guess... its a stratocaster?

Anyone tried a 5string and not like them? And why?
LukeFRC replied to Marvin's topic in General Discussion
I'll subscribe to this to ensure that I never buy a 5 string bass ever again! You get 5 extra notes on a 5 string; 2 of which are very easily accessible by simply dropping the E down to D on a 4 string. I've now tried (at gig/band volume for more than just a song or two) x4 5 string basses and I've yet to find one that sounds as good as a decent 4 string when playing down to low D. I will now sell the 5 tht I have and continue to detune my four strings down to D for the odd song (who needs the notes below that as they are muffled mush any way).
Warwickhunt, I've been on this forum long enough to have heard you say that many times.... are you telling me you currently have a 5 string (again)?
I think the biggest two problems with a 5 string bass are: Crap B strings, easily sorted by getting a decent 5er. £400ish can pick you up an L2500 or a SUB5 for example, lots of 5ers seem to be 4 strings with an extra string bolted on and a wider neck which doesn't always work IMO. For a good idea how a B string should be, a 5 string ray or Warwick are definitely basses to look to just to get a feel of how they should be. The neck width, they are wider and the depth of the neck changes over the strings too. Some people have problems with cramp etc on the bigger necks, for some it's worth persevering and getting used to it, some don't bother. Personally I went from a 4 string to a 6 string, then back down to a 5. Once you're used to a 5 string it does everything a 4 string does and more. Because I can play a 5 string, I don't see the point in limiting myself with a 4. I wouldn't mind owning a decent 6er but with my main band being a 3 piece, I very rarely need to play anything high up (the music thins out too much without more instruments fattening it up) and with my 2nd band being ska-ish, I'd struggle with a lot of the basslines with the extra string on.
yep, a lot of the 5's I've tried were not good B strings, put me off to be honest. I like the idea of a 5 string bass.
Hi, I've always been 4 string but just recently borrowed a 5 for a few weeks, I couldn't get on with it at all! Feel as though I would have had to of started on a 5 string to be using one a lot! Think im just so used to being able to route back I my E string without having to look or even think about it!
I get what you are saying, but I don't get it at the same time. Same with I'm used to a D profile neck and that was a C or V so I sold it... surely it's just practice, technique and getting used to things? -
<p> </p> <p><br />
<br /> <br /> <br /> I agree that illegal downloading may help artists get out there. But honestly, I have never streamed/downloaded a song, liked it, then bought the album. I have however streamed/downloaded a song and then streamed/downloaded the rest of the tracks from the same site. Convenience. And this is what I imagine most people do (as is supported by the statistics of sales etc etc). 'Spreading the word' seems a bit of a cop-out really to me really. If I steal a bass from a guitar factory, I'll just tell the Police that I was planning to play it at my gigs and at some point a couple of people might think 'Hey, cool bass' and buy one.<br /> <br />
</p> <p> </p> <p>I downloaded and paid for in rainbows.
Turned into an interesting thread. I guess my problem is that I don't like to "collect" instruments. I see them as (pretty) tools and feel a bit guilty if I don't use them. Especially if they're expensive- would rather have a holiday or money in my sons' university fund than an instrument gathering dust!
some the values on basses I have bought have gone up over any inflation on money you could stick in the bank

good on him. and using fingers which would lead me to think he actually does know what he's doing. If I was going to mime a bass I would play with pick- purely as the up and down of the hand would look better
