you are in cape town, you have this old fender bass and what you REALLY want is a warwick..... great refin though

so let me get this right..... You are a bass player of a large number of years. Talented and able to write 'clever' lines. You normally play prog and play a 6 string bass. he is a very very talented musician. former bass player, now guitarist and songwriter. He plays punk type bass and writes kinda poppy simple metal songs. You hang out and work on songs, he pays for a big recording session himself to record these songs. You (and for very good reason) can only make a day of the session and record the lines you wrote on some of the songs. as it turns out the songwriter listening back doesn't like your lines and rerecords them. Meanwhile the 'band' get signed. my questions... 1) given the different musical backgrounds, and the fact they are his songs- why are you surprised? 2) this is somewhat unrelated.... but.... what is your role in this band in the future going to be? This fella seems to stick a lot of cash behind his dream and his talent, you have work and family commitments. When the band leader and the label wants to take the band on tour of europe for a month- what will you do then? If he's that good, are you going to make the commitment to follow? (I will add also at this point that I think it's far better to put family before any rock and roll dream.)

Does anyone know how basses are sold each year ?
Go figure? What does that mean?
go figure, go work out why I have two versions of an instrument I can't really play. It makes little sense -
i think ishould have read the question a little better, it's semi acoustic that i voted (335 copy) but that was because i thoiught you were asking what i would reccomend (i love mine and with a coil tap and a piezo bridge it would cover most bases) but if it was a house on fire moment or that nightmare (for me) situation of having to sell all but one of my guitars then my McIlroy acoustic would be the one i'd keep, nothing i've ever played comes close to how good it sounds and how well it plays, i still can't quite believe that it's mine and i've had it for just over 4 years. http://www.mcilroyguitars.co.uk/ (mines an AS25, walnut and cedar with pearwood bindings)
Nice looking guitar that! I think the route of the question is this- I'm moving house soon to leeds, and shortly after getting married. Currently studying a masters which has been great but money is dwindling- so money and space are not things I have loads of. I have an amp and 2 basses- which are amazing- one of the great things about basschat is that i have owned amazing instruments and been able to sell them on and ended up settling with two that are exceptional. I also have two guitars, a 1987 Takamine EN10 which is a lovely dreadnaught acoustic. sounds great and a lovely to play (and even better plugged in) and a 1984 Yamaha SG400 and a wee Line6 amp. again a really special instrument. I can't play either really yet and was thinking along the lines of if I could only have one, either an electric or acoustic which would I go for? and why? It seemed a good question to ask on here- and the results are certainly interesting. As to what I will do? Not a clue, I know the old owner of the acoustic would take it back, and some time in the future if I wanted I could get some other acoustic (prob not a dreadnaught though) though I would be hard pressed to find one remotely close for the money. Like ways the Yamaha is a 'lower end' SG and not that valuable- but... you know when you pick up an instrument and it just feels 'right' and musical.... yeah it's one of them. prob I will keep both and struggle for space and cash
Now I want to keep it original, too many options. I think I'll use it this weekend and see how it goes at a gig, it hasn't been out much in the last couple of years. I can make a decision then.
In my experience, and not liking the "emg active sound" they work better in a gig than at home. And nickel strings too

i left the band who abbreviated to FRC about 5 years ago. Sometimes I think of asking nicely to leave the band.... but what would I replace it with huh? huh?
-
also I would keeps trying to trade it- eventually someone will bite. it's a nice looking thing and if I had anything spare that would interest you I'ld be coming to try it. try a new sale post, pretty pictures (daylight on bed sheet, flash off) bit of the history of them and so on.

if you like the bass and everything about it except the tone then mod away. if not what dub junkie says.
Thanks again such, the pickups are sorted. Any ideas for a preamp, the EMG one is volume, blend and stacked Bass and Treble tone control. So ideally 3 pots that aren't mounted to a board. I guess I'll be drilling 2 holes anyway for a pickup selector and a coil tap, so I can drill more holes for pots if it's wort while.
stacked pots? with push pull switches?
Ok. Firstly thanks as always for everyones thoughts. A few more questions? Is it worth changing the pre amp to an east retro j deluxe? Will this work for Funk/Rock - Maroon 5/ Later Chili's stuff? Will a 500 watt Mark Bass tube power a 4x10 and a 2x10 and still have a little head room?
you've spec-ed a rig you are going to go and buy, but don't know if it will work for the type of music you play? can I ask why you chose the stuff you did then? I don't quite understand how you are approaching your rig buying. can you explain? as for the preamp- worth it for what? what doesn't your bass do currently that you want it too? it's a good preamp so it will probably sound great- but what are you looking for? Personally if I wanted a flea/maroon 5 type sound I wouldn't start looking with mark bass... but maybe you want that make so a reason

good poll this. I expected more acoustic dominance to be honest!
So it's really a semi-semi-acoustic archtop?

335s and the ilk are known as semi-solid to be super pedantic. Whereas the ES-175 is a semi acoustic. Glad I could help....

Thanks for that. *Dies*

My Strat, I cant get on with those hollow bodied things.

But the Epiphone Casino is properly hollow - same as a Gibson ES-330.
guys- calm down! the poll can be edited- and has been!

some kinda of buffer, split the signal, one loop into effects and the other into a low pass filter (or even a good old passive tone control) and then another buffer. alternatively you can play with the input and output caps on the guitar effects to let more bass through.

Fender P-Bass Special FSR Seafoam Green in Merchant City Music
LukeFRC replied to merello's topic in Bass Guitars
Unfortunately , I think it is!
sometimes you do wonder about them. 2 band and a passive tone would make more sense.... it just looks wrong -
Not really. Just shove a couple of bits of carbon fibre in the neck, or 2 truss rods, and a couple of extra bolts in the neck pocket (although that is just to make you feel better as much as anything) and hey presto. A structurally sound 6 stringed bass. It's not as if you're trying to hold up the eiffel tower or anything...
or even just through neck multilaminates of different african hardwoods, aged and seasoned properly and made by a highly skilled manufacturer, you would have thought would have been alright?
A player posted a pic on Talkbass and it's very metallic, not pastel, which is an odd choice.
in my opinion it just looks odd. Is that a 3 band eq on it too? -
