  4. What I would be interested in is it gets even more crappy at low power mode - which you would imagine you might use in inbuilt electronics - it would be interesting how much the voltage is controlled down for it. what effect would a really low slew rate have audibly on a lpf?

  7. We use a qu16 digital desk with different monitor out, that goes to some headphone amplifiers at the front - long cables then take a feed from each amplified output to each musician. Musicians who care can then set their own mix using the Qu-you app and those who don’t ask the sound guy. Mostly it’s a mono signal but if you are super lucky you get a stereo feed. this mixing bit for me is super important- basically we’ve all been in enough churches to tell stories about dubious sound techs - allowing me to do my own mix reduces their workload, let’s me get my mix right and crucially decreases the ability of someone deafening me! musicians bring their own IEM, this can range from custom moulded what sits, to decent bottom range ultimate ears for me, Mee pro m6 or even just phone buds depending on the musician and how much they need to hear/care. Unless you need to move around a lot while you play I imagine a cable would be enough for most churches and save in cost, and for me a set of IEM is the musicians thing to source - much like you might bring a bass and amp. this sometimes seems to be a harder concept for singers to grasp but to get started iPhone buds would just about work. It’s good to find a cheap but good ear phone that you can recommend as an upgrade, a few years back the Mee M6 pro were what we were suggesting at £25-30, affordable for those with middle class jobs and birthday present level for those without.

To be fair I had issues with a seized bridge on my Bravewood- in possible explanation for both of them their was a shortage of Allparts vintage style bridges in 2020 and when they came back the metal was very soft … which could have been due to covid shortages as much as the actual bridge. Anyway partly my fault for forcing it! the gotoh aged unit thst replaced it is brilliant
  9. Jeez that comes across as a bit aggressive. YouTube clips of basses is never going to be a good way to make definitive decisions. ultimately if someone want the Wal tone they buy a Wal. (Which Funkle has) if you wanted too, and knew the right people you could then clone it, but that’s not a cheap (or commercial viable option otherwise it would have been done) and gets into morally dubious areas around trade dress. another option would be to take the concept of a Wal and upgrade it to the 21st century- and ACG made awesome things along those lines. or you could get bits that are currently available and see how close you could get, which would be fun…. This is a thread on a forum where funkle explores the recipe that make up a bass that sounds but doesn’t look like and spends his money trying things, the rest of us are just along for the ride for our own enjoyment and to learn something.
  10. BTW I'm not disagreeing with this. It's good - it's just that the discipline of being happy with what you have is also good to learn. Then you do the fun things because they are fun, rather than trying to fill a Dingwall shaped hole in your soul
  11. Oh and GAS is a fun mistress to entertain, but it's not really linked to music and musicianship. If it's affordable and fun then great, and there's lots of fun things to try but if you feel you need to or have too then there are bigger issues.

Fender typically didn't do shielding... and when he did with metal plates behind pickups etc he moved away from it, whether on tone or cost basis I don't know but the skinny string players apparently say it it attenuates the high end. I've had a pre EB ray on my bench and that didn't have or need shielding And neither did my early 80's L1000 - they just didn't have or need it and it wasn't part of the design.... that's different to skimping.

  16. 300-600 will get you a Korean made sire or bass collection bass - a whole bass. So that’s what you are kinda going against. I think the problem is that you might not be solving a problem people have - that kinda money gets you a whole bass if you want and people who don’t really want to spend money won’t pay for fancy then at the top end people who want high end stuff and fancy woods etc will probably be able to afford John shukers prices (of equivalent) and have the reliability and reassurance of a known name

  19. That was really interesting- I wonder if the cab IR were on on the Ampeg? it sounded like the bassrig had the analogue cab sim on maybe but then the ampeg sounded like it didn’t

  21. I had a early 80's Thumb bass a while back ... the MEC preamp and active SD pickups designed in an era before tweeters/horns in bass cabs were common. I ultimately sold it as I was normally DIing straight into the desk and using IEM and there was so much top end it was painful
