no, the moment it was unplugged no noise. (Which stands to reason really as there's nothing going in anywhere to go out the outputs.) So noise was first via the balanced XLR with no DI box used. Phantom off to stop blowing up anything. Then tested one channel with Active orchid box so active. We turned phantom on for that test - same result. And we used a different power socket the other side of the room. Yeah I think it could be something like that. or all the fairy lights on the Christmas tree. Thanks for your help everyone - tbh I need to go and do some tests on things in the room and at home before wasting any more of your time and expertise.

Yes - but would a faulty valve cause noise if the SV is turned off?!

FFS I think you're best to be rid of that stress. I've met you, you're a lovely guy, and a decent player. Bands, when it's not a full time job, find ways to work around each others limitations - even if you were improvising over a chord chart and expert at it most music has expected numbers of bars, chopping and changing for no reason... is interesting choice.... chopping and changing and not being able or willing to communicate to your bandmates is just crazy. And when I say chopping and changing I mean ****ing up. Also I know blokes who get angry easy, and blow up and get exasperated with things, thats bad, but also the culture that breeds around them - you know what - life really really is too short .

I’ve done that on a DIY stingray I built - one of the reasons it isn’t common is that the pickup feeds directly into the preamp and it doesn’t love the impedance switching. the L1000 is probably a good example where pickup switching was designed in

other way to do it would be to have two sets of identical strings and a bridge that allows quick release (like my sadowsky one does, it can't be original though)

like @chris_b said - the best thing is to buy basses you like. However if you know what you're after and what something is going to do then it's worth changing something... And also sometimes it's fun to experiment with things, and £100 on a set of pickups is cheaper than buying a new bass.

The EQ1 is brilliant. Flexible but after a few months very learnable. FYI there’s a blend control so you can set where any top end you want to add in comes from- or a blend

Best purchase … after 12+ months and all sorts of parts related delays I got a P bass… (Bravewood) worst: nothing really, I picked up some secondhand strings off here to try which I hated… but that was more my taste than anything else!!
