Ok take two... on it's own it sounds ok and is subtle. After other stuff it does lovely things.

so this evening... Jon Willis has some new amp settings using two amps blocks... downloaded and tried them... he says "additional clarity and dimension" - sound ok... touch sensitivity when you dig in is different in a nice way. Not amazing. past future reverbs of Neve desk... longer than helix IRs so truncated... get the free EQ ones I linked too if you're interested first... I used to have a Helborg preamp that did lovely things to my sound, although not based on a Neve at all the nice thing was the tone of the transformer so that more warm studio transformers sound is something that has interested me ever since. Not enough to start buying studio gear but you know what I mean (though if you've got a hellebore pre spare.... get in touch) The EQ ones I had had for ages and not really played with them - when I was messing around with some patches I copied an amp block into a patch I had already and it sounded great... The IR was on... it just seemed to hold together nicely. These ones are cleaner but add something almost inperceptable. I don't know, I was playing and it's the sound of a clean preamp strip... but things sound a bit nicer with it on. Worth the £10? Probably not, the free ones are nice enough.. I'll find out...

What @Owen said also it’s ok, sometimes depending on the band your worship may be desperately trying to keep a band in time with one another, other times it’s to create something to help others, sometimes if you’re practiced enough as a band you get to feel like you are connected, and sometimes putting the bass down and singing (ie not into a mic) and being part of it models and helps everyone else. Don’t worry about it. my one suggestion would be before the meeting take some time to worship for yourself. For me it looks like a quiet house before everyone is up and a quiet cup of coffee others will do other things

I dunno I've seen some Fenders which look completely fake relicing too - I think the problem is that given a choice folk go "for the more is better" - when as @wateroftyne has demonstraited sometimes less is way way more

why not just buy a G&L?

erm for me - brackets are switchable … (overdrive pedal) - amp model - eq block - compressor - IR - (reverb/chorus/delay) def sounded better after the compressor

I think I may end up spending the £10 to find out... Of interest these "Neve EQ IRs" from here https://line6.com/support/topic/23483-neve-tone-shaping-irs/ are very nice and do lovely things to my tone, exp later on the signal path.

Last night I set my helix up slightly differently... I set up a really middy forward tone and then cut the lows quite a lot. Two patches one spikier using at the SVT4 and one rounder sounding I think with the Acoustic. Unsurprisingly (and in retrospect obviously) this fitted in the mix way better this morning and meant I was actually audible rather than just being a sub bass mush. Lots of fun.

Bought a pickup from John, came two days before he said it would - awesome! thanks @oldslapper

It looks like a metal earthing sleeve over the wire. Very clever. Alpher also do improbably clean looms in there stuff. I fixed up a molested ibanez roadster a few days ago and went from spaghetti that didn’t work to spaghetti that did!

mine looks alright - mind you I had a rusted bridge I ended up replacing with a gotoh

Anyone any idea if these would work on a helix? https://pasttofuturereverbs.gumroad.com/l/iskwl im after trying to get the tone I was getting from the Helborg preamp I should never have sold - (yes I know that the Helborg was not based on the neve circuit )

? What’s the point of that then, Rockwool in the neck next?

I am genuinely loving this thread - it's something I've half wondered about doing myself... and you are doing all the R&D for all of us!

Have I remembered right that the v type and F1x are variations on the same fender design?

So a part from Spain, and a couple of hours undoing what some idiot had done in the cavity and it works! so because other people will find this thread on google searches… the wiring diagram can be found here and the jack you need is a stereo jack with DPDT switching in it. so I’ve got it back to stock (ish) - the only difference is non original strap buttons (I think), newer knobs, my eq knobs are 4-5mm too small diameter and a dimarzio model p and J vs the ibanez pickups -bad thing is non original, good thing is humbucking. so yeah. It works, need to give it a good bit of playing time in active… I’m not sure what I think about it- oddly the machine heads are some of the best I’ve ever used, not too heavy and generally really high quality construction.

"well Mr Ball, I've been all over Talk bass and I think I know what will make people like this next bass..." "What is it?" "Tortoiseshell! They lap it up." "Pickguard? that's easy" "Trust me boss, they stick tort on anything over there" "Well we're the Ball family - we don't do things by half- how about we do tort inlays too!" "Oooh lets go for it" "really?" "yes, lets do the binding too" "oh yeah"

there's very little around that doesn't reference the blueprints laid out by Leo Fender or Ned Steinburger
