  1. I found the treble stack really poor sounding till I realised I could change the internal trim pot - for me the treble off the neck pickup fitted better than the bridge. I’ve not had anything more than quick try of Wals but to my ears the preamp was less hifi whereas John East designed stuff has a certain clean clear tone going on
  2. If you use much of the treble stack The blend control for the treble stack (on the board) is fairly powerful tone shaper.
  3. And how does the test bed sound?!
  4. I've not fixed the preamp on mine but I've been picking it up more and more to play passively. It plays really nicely
  5. For a moment I thought this was yours… https://bassdirect.co.uk/bass_guitar_specialists/Ibanez_Musician_1982.html?fbclid=IwAR1JcYqyzeC9s9XkuAjotRjETZzXmyODZ6LfSjH6oVIlZD_ubEy0-h6Q_dY
  6. flog the speakers and send it back to barefaced to have the correct speakers added and it might not be the worst idea.
  7. have you got a picture of the alleged prank so we can confirm or deny?
  8. What are the external effects? If you switch them out one by one does it change anything? Even off some maybe be buffered bypass. Also taking them out let’s you test the cables too…
  9. Looks nicer than I had previously intimated
  10. Looks like the apprentice was told to get a test piece to work on their dot inlays
  11. oooh very nice where did you find that? If you look online you can find the 70-90's catalogues for ESP, mainly focusing on the complete instruments they would have been building. I'd love a Navigator Espionage
  12. 90% of what I need to use my hx stomp for is amp sim and maybe compressor … this would be a fun alternative… tuner there you go. Really trying to avoid being a pedal person! 😁
  13. I accidentally bought a cheap acoustic on eBay and it turned out to be a fancy luthier built thing that sounds phenomenal - it has that consistency of tone down the neck that I associate with quality instruments ... Now on an electric bass I don't think that it's as critical, and there are a few different ways you can get to a certain outcome ... but there's still something where some basses just sound better, more even and more predictable and resonate "right" whatever that means, it's often a quiet quality that ins't instantly recognisable, some scooped sounding basses sound "better" at first... If I knew what it was that got that magic I'ld be happy. It's not just cost - I've played plenty of expensive basses that didn't have it, and some cheap ones that did... I'm more likely to expect something like it off an expensive bass but... who knows what the link is...
  14. It’s good to pull apart the question a bit - what do you get for the money? £2k spent with ACG or overwater would get you a very different quality level than the same money spent on something with Fender on the headstock. Likewise objectively fender and Squier are built to price points - where would something cheaper like Sire fit into that range? somehow I’ve ended up with basses that were £3k and £3.5k new, a custom built P that cost me £1.7k and a 80s ibanez that cost me £350 odd
  15. I first joined Basschat in 2007 to sell one of these (maybe even the same one) and thought I was only polite to post a few times after selling it... it got out of hand!
  16. depending on your needs the other way to approach it would be with snapshots...
  17. eBay is full of resellers - you probably should check out DigiMart Instruments marked S are new, and the japanese on some of the listings mention this is a limited revival of the original https://www.digimart.net/search?category12Id=359&keywordAnd=fodera&x=0&y=0
  18. Would Locknuts on the threaded bit to fix it in place work?
  19. If you like it buy it, if you don't don't. Live and let live. Some people like Rickenbacker, me pointing out the obvious wrongness of their preferences doesn't really get us anywhere. If you make something unusual, and want people to buy it you have to do a bit more on your marketing to convince people to want it, for whatever reason you choose. If you don't then likely less people will buy it. For what it's worth, I kinda get the design from a mechanical problem solving perspective, and would much rather have one than one of these ...
  20. @Beedster ill just leave this here for you https://bassdirect.co.uk/bass_guitar_specialists/Takamine_B_10.html?fbclid=IwAR2a3ji7Pmg-ExCiRz9fn4RJJ8yMs6xh5ykBsMVLY8HBa7d5Os2AeSQegDc (I’m a bad person I know)
  21. I ordered a pickup last month that was due to be in stock in Thomann late feb… then they shipped it and it arrived a few days later and two weeks early!
  22. anyone else see this and start googling where Retford is?
  23. the righty in the first vid or the lefty in the second?!
  24. For anyone who cares (and @Owen who will humour me) I solved it! It's fixed and works!! Test at home: plug into mini mixer with headphones, low signal lots of noise... my 3 year old daughter has the cans on.... "Hmm maybe it's something in software settings?" I think - go to plug USB cable in and BANG the signal jumps up giving my 3 year old a fright (her hearing is fine) so first problem is that something on the USB port was doing something odd... seems to be fixed. As Jean-Luc suggested asked the Demon to go elsewhere, he's now made up home in my wife's hairdryer. Will deal with this problem later. Took to church, plugged in.... it works but the XLR outputs are +4dBu and the preamp on the desk needs to be set at about 0db, maximum 6db ... so if we plugged in and it hadn't been turned right down that would explain the noise too.... Then the noise floor is pretty high, experimenting (I've not been involved with the tech at church) so some random cable extension is putting a load of noise in the signal, switch that and bingo we're ok! Still can't play the bloody thing myself but hey ho!
  25. I had no idea what this thread I got a notification was about .... so had to remind myself... but very much approve of that colour choice... I wanted to get my Lakland refinished a similar colour, I was going to go for something similar to MINI's British racing green IV metallic In other green colours worth looking at BMWs Isle of Man green would be interesting....
