PS - Can anyone recommend a decent small cabinet to go with one of these? More than likely a 1x12, not really bothered if its neo or not. Nothing ludicrously expensive, which rules out the recent neo price rises!
Don't think you can go wrong with an Aguilar GS112 mate

Nice one dude, I always liked those ol' Westones! I had a shot of one once that had a fuzz circuit built in, the owner was convinced it was stock, but I wasn't so sure... I do understand the purist's point of view, at least when it comes to instruments that retain a lot of value, but at the end of the day, basses are for playing, so as long as it's tasteful I'm sure it'll rock Anyway, good luck with the "enhancement" of an underrated classic.
Hmmm lots to ponder, thanks for the tips Eude and Derren. Will definitely go for something smaller anyway, just need to flog my current rig. Any ideas on who actually stocks the Promethean so I can check one out? Ideally in the north west as that's where I'm based...cheers
Not at all dude, sorry I took so long to pop in! Eude
I've not been on here long, and already I'm frantically thinking of what to sell in order to get new gear!!! The Promethean does look just like what I'm after thought, fed up of lugging my 4x10 cab everywhere and this looks like the ideal replacement. Does anyone know how it compares to the similar spec'd Mark Bass combos? As in is it worth saving up and going balls out on a Mark Bass or is the Promethean the best bet?
I moved from a MarkBass LittleMark 250 with an Aguilar GS112 set up to the wee 5110 Promethean combo. I'm really really happy with the move, I still prefer the flat sound of my older set up, just worked well for my style and basses, but the Promethean is an incredible thing! I can easily dial in a sound close enough to what I used to use, plus I can plug in headphones when the wife has had enough, it's small enough to sit in the living roomand it's loud enough to be used on it's own for smallish gigs or as a stage monitor for louder ones. There isn't a direct comparison between the 5110 and any MarkBass combos as they don't do a 1x10 combo, obviously the cheapest MarkBass 1x12 combo will be louder on it's own, however the head ain't removable, it doesn't put out 500W at 4 Ohms, has no aux in or headphone out and it's substantially more expensive, at least at new list price. The 5210 combo could be compared to the MarkBass 2x10, but the above still applies, bar the wattage, however I think the Ibanez combo might be wired at 4 Ohms, so if that is the case, it will probably be a lot louder. For the money, the Ibanez stuff is incredible, and the build quality matches, if not beats the build on the MarkBass stuff in my opinion. I'm positive they'll be making a loss on these uints, but sometimes that's necessary to break into the market. The sound isn't quite as refined or hi-fi, but the Ibanez might be a little more versatile and can certainly do hi-fi in it's own way and has no bother going "old school". I still lust after the MarkBass stuff and under different circumstances I wouldn't have parted with what I had, but the Ibanez does everything and more than I would've got if I'd spent a couple of hundred pounds more and went with the MarkBass 1x12, or the 2x6 for that matter, which is even more limited... That's my 2p! Eude

Wow! Looks amazing dude! For me, personally, I'd have gone with 2 X 1x12 cabs, but each to their own Congrats, and looking forward to here how you get on gigging with it! Eude
Anyone gigged the Promethean as the combo? With a drummer?
Yup, Several times, in a band with one acoustic guitar and two singers going through a 300W PA. The bass really really cut through nicely! I've also played in a much bigger venue, using it as a stage monitor, and was asked to turn it down by the sound guy as it was loud enough to mess with the front of house sound! Eude
This is what I use (for some gigs, too..!). Headphone & AUX inputs, too.
+1,000,000! It's amazing to have something that is compact enough to keep it in the living room yet still be able to use for gigs! Eude
Definitely want to consider the Promethean. Light, small, good price, and ive heard like you say the quality is high. I dont want to spend £1000 on a combo or £600 on a neo cab when you can get good sounding ones like this for £500+.
Well I would strongly recommend it matey. I moved from the MarkBass/Aguilar set up as it was over kill and although it was incredibly portable, there was even more portable things out there. If you're considering getting a 1X10 cab, you might want to look here too >> http://www.basscentre.com/bass-cabs/eden-ex110-cab.html Not sure what they're like though. Get out and have a go of a Promethean Eude

Firstly, congrats on the new band, you sound much happier with things which is good to hear. Secondly, Promethean 5110 Combo! I played in a very similar set up, instrument-wise, to yourself for a few years before I left Edinburgh. I used to use a LittleMark250 through an Aguilar GS112 but eventually replaced it with the Promethean which was perfect! It can sound pretty neutral, can do a wide range of tones if you want, it's light as hell, it's tiny, it's very very loud and has a nice DI out, oh and it's about half the price of the Shuttle 6.0 12T Combo. I must add the build quality of the thing is incredible, I was very very pleasantly surprised. Going through the PA is fine as a back up, but there's no substitute for going through a proper bass amp. It provides proper separation between the bass and the rest of the band, you'll have complete control over your sound (and volume) rather than having it ruined by the PA being tweaked to suit the room, something which is very important when gigging smaller venues with an acoustic guitar, to avoid nasty feedback... That's my 2p! Eude
It annoys me.. as it makes it more difficult to get deals
Yup, unforgivable. Pikey bloody scum ruining it for everyone else, they deserve to get caught. It'd be seriously tempted to shop them, especially as they've been a bunch of arseholes... </2p>

The common or garden LittleMark has a really nice warm organic tone mate, might be worth checking that out too
From what everyone is saying why don't you have a crack with there new Ashdown MI thingy. lightweight head, supposed to be quality, have the power and dynamic of a mosfet system i.e your abm. But very light. It has the LG type preamp on it which is very good, if you like valvy warmess try an art valve pre amp they are amazing.
Or perhaps hold fire a little longer if your back will hold out. You'll see in the thread I posted earlier, there's a chance Ashdown might come out with a micro head with the 427 Smallblock front end at some point. I'm very excited about the prospect... Eude
Hey Eude, In answer to your questions; 1. No switching simply that in the way the power section works there isn't a noticable drop in power from 4 ohms to 8 ohms(it confused us at first too) This will be great for anyone wanting to use a single 8 ohm cab. 2. We are actually throwing around a couple of ideas at the moment involving the all valve preamp from the 427 Smallblock head so will keep you posted ;-) Hope this helps!
Brilliant, thanks for clearing that up. In response to your answer to question 2, if you require any additional hands on testing, I'd be more than happy to help out Cheers, Eude
ok, so the Genz Benz sounds like a contender. I know the markbass amps all sound pretty ace, and I have never used any Genz Benz stuff, so Im still swaying in Markbass' direction. Hmmmmm I need to get my hands on these amps for some direct comparisons.....
The regular MarkBass LittleMark tone is gorgeous, quite warm and organic naturally and can do hi-fi quite nicely too. As much as the tone appeals to me, I'm not sure if it would be my first choice for heavy rock, especially if you're used to the Ampeg sound. Not sure about the Rocker, however I have heard the the LittleMark Tube sounds almost exactly the same as the regular one. Just my 2p Eude
Evening Chaps, Just thought I should jump in and clear up a couple of points here. First of all the MiBass has been a long time in the making and we have waited until we could source a power section that we felt could deliver the goods properly, often in the past the power section has always been the weak link in the chain in any class D amp. The power amp that we are using in the MiBass blew us away in testing and is much more warm and powerful than any class D poweramp we have used in the past and also has handled anything we could throw at it during months of soak/play testing. The front end is an evolution of the Little Giant preamp with a few nips and tucks under the hood, yes it isn't fully parametric but the controls do all interact with one another hence us describing it as semi parametric, we will however now simply describe it as an interactive eq if this will make people happier ;-) We think that its a great pre amp and offers a huge range of tones that can be shaped very quickly, deep bassy dub tones up to bright slap happy sounds no need for filter knobs or limiters, We had great positive feedback from the guys who tried it last week at the Musik Messe but would urge that you hang fire on opinions until you can actually try one in a shop first. Finally the optional front panels.... Wow this seems to have stirred opinion! We have done lots of custom amps and cabinets over the years in different colours and finishes at the requests of artists and often regular gigging Joes who want something a bit special and more personal. We thought with the MiBass due to the way the front panel is an overlay it would be nice to offer people the chance to either pick their own colour for the front or design their own incorporating band logos or whatever they fancied. The key point to make here that this is optional and if you don't want to change anything then you don't have... Thanks guys been interesting reading peoples opinions, any more queries just ask.
Thank you very much for chiming and taking the time to clear up a few of the points. Not many manufacturers, especially the big boys, make the effort to contribute to forums like this one, but it is always appreciated Looking forward to trying one of these out when they appear in the shops, however I have a couple of further questions if you'll indulge me. 1. How does the 4 Ohm/8 Ohm switching work? 2. Any chance of you slapping in the dual tube front end in this in the future? Cheers, Eude
I don't suppose they're counting on selling many of these high-end sig models. I guess they value them for the profile they bring to the brand, but I dunno - I'm no business expert! Btw, there is an interesting thread on TB, starting with a long statement from Steve Bailey about his sig models: http://www.talkbass.com/forum/f28/steve-ba...-fender-759381/
Maybe you're right dude, but at that price they're guaranteeing they won't sell many, bar to overpaid Warwick fan boys. I guess they might do a Korean made version, like they have with most of the other basses, so that might get it into a more reasonable price point... Thanks for pointing out that TalkBass thread, really interesting reading Eude
Just had a watch of this... the opening salvo? You can change the front panel! Also, to paraphrase part of it: 'This has a warmth that isn't really familiar to other class D amps.... amplifiers like this normally have one trick.... we've tried to make this more versatile than others...' They've got their heads in the sand.
To be fair, the man from Ashdown couldn't have looked more nervous, gave a fairly wobbly interview, but you're right they really need to think about how they're marketing this, and it may already be too late! Changeable front panels is the norm with £10 Pay (through the nose) As You Go phones these days, they should just make the colour an option when you order it and that should be the end of it! Why oh why do they not focus on the B&O power section and the fairly obvious high build quality?! The pricing is about right on these, but I fear they won't be in line with the current competition and I doubt they'll be all that popular if it's the tried and tested (read same old) ABM/MAG front end. I really hoped that they would try and do something like this but with the front end from their new Valve series which is apparently the dogs danglers... Oh well. Eude Eude
From a photo taken at the Frankfurt show, it looks like the RRP is a mere 6749 euros.
Wow! Well at least they're being consistent with their crazy pricing structure! How on earth is that bass worth that much!? Don't see this selling all that well then... Eude
And what odd decision is that? If I recall correctly, it was Stu who went to Washburn for a bass. Fender have done the Urge II tenth anniversary bass and the Urge was their first signature bass. Stu and Fender's relationship goes all the way back to when Fender bought Kubicki in the late 80's. Stu had been playing a Washburn acoustic bass since the late 90's/early 00's and built contacts in the company who offered him a new signature model. Stu started playing that and moved away from Fender. Please correct me if I am wrong, as I recall reading what Stu had written about how he got his new bass but it's possibly my nightshift hazed brain is remembering things incorrectly. As for Stu's new Washburn bass, it sounds incredible but I don't like the looks at all.
I read in an interview, the UK Bass Mag I think, that Fender called Stu up to tell him that they were stopping making the Urge, which is why he moved everything over to Washburn, however he seems very very happy with his new bass. Washburn have allowed him to do whatever he wanted for the news bass, something that I get the impression Fender are a bit funny about. So I guess it's smiles all round Eude
Flea's another that pops into my head for example. The guy used a 'ray into GK for a long time and that was his trademark sound, then he seemed to get bored and start swapping about basses on whims. It must be incredibly frustrating for a company like Modulus to make a bass that they even name after an endorsee, then they jump ship soon after.
From what I remember, Flea only jumped ship from Musicman for his touring basses because they wouldn't make him a graphite necked signature model. I'm not sure that seed was planted/helped along by Modulus, but he apparently struggled with the necks of his Stingrays shifting a lot when on tour, probably a combination of how fiercely he attacks his basses and the punishing tour schedules the Chilli's used to do.
I don't think the Stingray was ever really his trademark sound. Obviously he is associated with that bass because of it's live use,but a lot of his most well known stuff was not played on a Stingray. In the studio he used all kinds of instruments-notably Spector,Wal and Alembic.
You're right dude, Flea never really did much recording with his Stingrays, especially after they got a little bigger and got proper recording budgets, however you rarely saw him with anything but a Stingray anywhere else, he was a pretty good endorsee for Musicman... I know he defo used a Wal for Blood Sugar Sex Magik, which has some of the nicest bass tones ever on it, and an Alembic Epic, I think, for One Hot Minute. Eude
