Ash tends to be quite a bright sounding wood to my ears. I've got a "White Ash" bass, which I guess is European and a Swamp Ash bass. Both of these are nice and bright, the White Ash has more grunt but is hella heavy by comparison, so for me anyway, the Swamp Ash is a very nice compromise. Hope that's of some help mate. Eude
The tecamp head is not removable unless you modified the top plate and did a bit of rewiring. Far from impossible but not entirely trivial either. It's perfectly possible to get adequately bassy 10"s, but you sacrifice volume - hence 8x10"s have 8 of them! But enough is as good as a feast. Both tecamp combos are so light that it's the size of the 10" one that's more significant as an advantage over the 12, rather than the weight. Both are great. The 12" unit sounds better in the mid-range, I think because the crossover/mid unit matches the 12" driver better than the 10". That mid unit means the clarity is excellent
Thanks for that dude. I think, to be honest, the TecAmp 10" would still be my preferred option if I can get hold of one. However, I did find a group test on youtube comparing the Shuttle 6.0, Ibanez Promethean and TC 450 heads and I really liked the sound of the Ibanez...
i've got a genz benz shuttle 6.0 with a genz cab (not a lightweight) its a great rig super portable, really good quality and even though the cab is not one of the new extra light versions its very light and easy to lift for its size. i would really recommend a secondhand genz rig or even just the head to start with
Thanks for the suggestion dude, but I've already got a mini rig of that size, I need something even more compact, something I can "carry on" using public transport, bit of a tall order I know, but a standalone head and cab ain't an option, unless it's one that slots in to make a combo like the Shuttle 3.0 10"er or the Ibanez Promethean... Cheers, Eude
I wouldn't stress about a combo, there are so many great little amps around now. My vote would be a Euphonic Audio head, (used 500?) and a wizzy 1x12 or Barefaced Midget. My GK MB150 still surprises me...but every now and then it sounds crap! All depends on the room. My other suggestion is the old SWR 220 head - its a puny 160w into 8 ohms, but a small modern 4ohm cab could sound very good and plenty loud?

I have to admit, you might be best off with a really nice amp and a super small/light cabinet. That way its not just a combo and works out better value.
I guess that's where the Ibanez and the Shuttle come into play. They're a lot more flexible and give the option of building a modular set up. Can you remove the head in the TecAmp jobbies?... Thanks everyone for your help/opinions so far by the way Eude
how much smaller can you get than a LM amp and a single GS12.. and still kick out some decent noise..?
A fair bit, amazingly! A 10" will never generate as much bass as a 12", just the same as a 12" won't sound as big as a 15", but you can still generate useful volume and with the right cab design a decent amount of bassey goodness too. I had a quick mess around with Paul's (Sugden) TecAmp Puma 10"er at the Moffat Bass Bash and I was might impressed. That kind of amp would be my ideal, although I think the Ibanez and Genz Benz Shuttle offerings will be close, if not equal... Don't forget, I'm looking for the best compromise between super small footprint for home use and useable features for live performance, I know it's a tall order, but I'm a fussy little b**ger Eude
Eude I had the same dilemma as you but I made my practice box of doom myself as what I wanted just wasnt't available... Used a @@@ked Rolland cube 30x as the donor cab. Stripped it and made a (mesa cribbed design) mount in the back for a PJB D-200. Re kitted it with a new Celestion green Ceramic mag 10" 200w speaker and recovered it in tolex. sound wise it was a bit too clean and hi fi for me so now I have a DHA VT-1 through the effects loop to give it that 'valve pre-amp' tone...... Whilst its not a Mesa, it is remarkably light, compact and loud enough........ My g'tarist who is very critical is very impressed with it. If you can find a @@@ked Roland cube to act as donor I have have no probs doing the mods to it so you can put the same bits (or a LMK 250 which was my other choice) in it..... Just a thought...... I must get some pics of it and put it in the build diaries section.....
I'd be really interested to see how that came out dude? Sounds real interesting, plus I'd still get my "MarkBass Sound"... Eude
Eude, have you checked out the new TC electronic combos? Also here Both guitarguitar and red dog music in edinburgh have them in stock, at £609 for the 2x10, and £549 for the 1x15. I am planning a perving session on saturday or sunday
I love the look of these bad boys, but I'm afraid they're a bit too big. I need something very compact, either a 10" er or a super small 12"er. The thing also needs to be an easy one hand lift, which the TC's won't be, which is a real shame... If only they'd do a 10" version of it Knowing my luck, I'll buy something and they'll bring one out just after. Eude
Kool - I'm a recent(ish) convert to short scales and I'm pretty unimpressed with what's out there off the shelf. I'm convinced that adding a decent, short-scale neck to an already decent body with decent pickups and hardware should make for a much better, more usable bass than shelling out for a not very good cheapie. As for long scales, I also want to try a 36" scale neck and string my Precision B,E,A,D or maybe even lower if I can find the strings. Warwick do an ultra-low tuned bass don't they?
Quite a few companies are doing ultra-low tuning sets now, Warwick, Rotosound, DR to name a few. I reckon a well made short scale neck and a quality bridge would make a very nice bass out of any of the Squier range of basses... Eude
SWR no questions... but if you are a finger style jazz/funky guy the Promethean is handy as you can take the head out and use the head at rehearsal studios etc.. (food for thought). They sound pretty good, i've used a friend and it was great, just take a gig or two to work out your sound and amp has enough kick for an extension cab, if you need it.. have I just changed my mind and gone for the Ibanbez.. I guess I have
I do love the Ibanez combo, it looks great and gets a great write up It has all the pro features I'm looking for too however...
£589
Right, there could be a winner already!
I know it doesn't tick a couple of your boxes (only 60W, no speaker out AFAIK), but there's the EBS Session 60. And I dunno if it fits in with your notion of "pro level", but I think there's a Line 6 Lowdown tiltback combo around the 100-150W range. Depends on whether you like the models. I've just parted from a Line 6 Lowdown Studio 110 in favour of a TC RS112 to pair with my LMII, purely because I prefer the sounds I can get from the MarkBass. Knowing that you like the MarkBass sound, you might not like the Lowdown models. Both the EBS and Line 6 would leave you change to spare from your budget. EDIT: This is the Line 6 (LD150), but it's over 40lbs. So I've given you two suggestions that don't really fulfil your criteria. I'll STFU now.
Cheers man. I really like both these amps, but they're not really loud/flexible enough for my purposes. I want something that's not going to take up much room, but I also want something that will be loud enough to use on stage as a monitor or at acoustic'y gigs with the added flexibility of being able to hook up another cab when necessary. So these little guys don't quite cut it in the "pro level" category. The spare change would be nice, but I'd only waste it on booze and black jack Eude
Shuttle 3.0 10T
I think the Shuttle is out of my price range, don't they come in about £700?!!!!... If they're around what I can afford I'll be on one like an aggressive moss! Eude
Gallien Kreuger MB150....
I did consider that, but I think it's probably a bit too wee. I use my low B a fair bit plus it's an old old amp design, so I'm not sure it'll be suited. However, if I could get one and the extension cab, it might be just the ticket. Hmmm... Annoyingly, GK are bringing out the MB112, a 200W super light 12" combo, but they seem to be having production problems as the release date keeps slipping, even though the rest of the range of those cabs has been around for a good 6 months Eude
i have a SWR baby baby blue combo (120W), which seems to fit the bill...i'm not sure if they make them any more, but if you can find one, then i think they're amazing sounding amps for the size.
Good shout dude. I've added a couple of SWRs to my list. Those Baby Blues are very hard to come by from what I can gather unfortunately Eude

OK guys, looking for a bit of advice here, apologies if this goes over old ground, but I couldn't find exactly what I was looking for in any earlier posts, plus new gear comes out all the time, hard to keep up. Due to a bit of a change of circumstances, I need to downsize my "mini rig of doom" even further, madness I know. I'll be moving on the LittleMark250 and Aguilar GS112 in favour of a small "pro level" combo, hopefully. Reason for the "pro level" comment is that I'm very used to the slickness, apparent transparency (IMHO) and quality MarkBass now, basically I've been spoiled... So....., I'm looking for a compact 10" or 12" combo, I guess 100W to 200W, speaker out (hopefully), one handed lift, sub 40lbs, with tilt back if possible. For about the money I could get for my current set up, probably £450 - £550 I guess. The ones that have spring to mind are:

Ibanez Promethean 10" combo
Fender Bassman 100 10"er (not a current model, from 2005? GAK seem to still stock them)
2nd hand TecAmp Puma Combo (if anyone is insane enough to part with it)
2nd hand MarkBass CMD 121H, or Mini CMD 121P (again if anyone has taken leave of their senses)
SWR Working Pro 10"
2nd hand SWR Baby Blue (rare as rocking horse poo unfortunately...)
Any other suggestions?... Eude
Not long through the door after picking up the bass. Had a wee shot at Alan's place and actually couldn't play it very well as I've never played (not seriously anyway) or owned a 5 string before. The bass is amazing. Back home I seem to be getting to grips with it although the flat fingerboard and asymmetrical neck are going to take a few weeks to get used to. The tones are pretty damn good though and I may seriously be able to retire the Wal. Thanks Alan for a lovely bass and getting it ready for my birthday. Cheers!! D.
Hey man, glad to hear you're enjoying the new bass You'll learn to love the flat board and the neck profile, they're actually a lot more sensible for bass necks in particular for 5 and 6 stringers. Congrats dude, I hope you two are very happy together. Eude

I'd love to have a 30" play thing bass, but not really all that impressed with any of the cheaper short scale basses. If I could get a nice cheap copy Jazz or Precision Bass, for ongoing mods, and ditch the neck for a 30" Jazz Profile Neck with a Fender "style| headstock, I'd be a very happy bunny. Would you mind me asking how much you think one of these necks might cost?... Cheers, Eude
I spoke to Alan yesterday and he's looking to get the bass finished by Tue next week (my birthday as it happens). The Elixir strings I sent him are too short - only the inner winding is passing through the nut. I must need XL scale strings to fit the 35" scale. Anyone know? He was also wrestling with a pickup that wasn't doing what it's supposed to do..... No photos yet, but there will be loads when I actually pick it up - I just need someone to give me a lift down to Moffat as I don't drive! cheers D.
Exiting times mate! I'm afraid you're right about the strings. Some "regular" strings will fit a 35" scale fine, but most larger manufacturers make XL strings now for that kind of application. I believe all DRs are OK on 35"ers, can't comment on Elixirs though I'm afraid. Good luck! Eude
Thankyou.. do you think the tone matches up to normal shukerry standards?
Of course mate! Loving the new Shukery designs too. Be cool if you could do a similar style recording with your Shuker Jazz. Cheers, Eude
