1.
Eude, I'd really appreciate that. I was going to hang fire for a week or two anyway as I'll be down in Colchester in a few days time and was going to pop into The Bass Merchant to maybe try one of the GK combos. But, for me, the Fender seems to have an even more suitable spec. Definitely be interested to hear how you get on with yours. Especially seeing as I've read some stuff about the smaller GK combos which seems to point towards reliability issues. That said, I'm all too aware that the net is sometimes the biggest source of misinformation as well useful information, so that may be something and nothing. Thanks, Mark
Dude, no problem at all. I've been labouring over this purchase for ages. I've done all I can research-wise without actually owning one. I'll be taking my Trace in to value it a week tomorrow ( going up north to drink a lot of rum this weekend) and I'll order the badboy then. I'll be gigging it on the 20th of July, so I could give you an even more thorough review then. I'll give you a shout as soon as I've got some info. Cheers, Eude
  2.
I should probably start a new thread as this is a bit of a different question, but has anyone any experience of the new range of Fender Combos? I was looking at the Bassman 150 and that seems to have the kind of spec I'm thinking of - tilt back design, 150w output, 12" speaker and relatively simple control set. Any comments? Mark
Hey Mark, I'm planning on getting one of those Bassman 150's in the next couple of weeks. Hoping to sell my Trace to fund it, although it's looking more likely that I'll be trading it in. If you can hang on, I can let you know how I get on with mine. From what I've read, these are great amps, very low and loud for their size + very very portable. Apparently Fender have really pulled the finger out since acquiring SWR, I imagine a lot of what's in an SWR will now be in the newer Fender models. Oddly though, I've heard that the build quality on the Fenders is even better than SWR! Cheers, Eude
  3. Jings Sugden! Those pickups looks incredible! That's gonna sound huge! Cheers, Eude
  4.
Yeah - that's the one (BTW I love your SC... I have a 6 string Sc on its way also - in design at the moment) He works for Overwater and it was his first Jazz build - start to finish (he actually worked on the Copper Jazz also). As it was a custom job I was around a lot to see how things were going and lend a hand as and when.
Nice one man, it's a gorgeous looking bass, I'm sure it's even cooler to have had your bro work on it too! Who's doing your single cut? Cheers, Eude
  5.
My newest bass - The shots show off the bass in a number of different lighting conditions. Is that the one your brother was working on in a previous build diary on Bassworld? Eude
  6. Hey guys, I've finally decided to sell on my Trace Elliot combo for something lighter and more compact. I'll probably end up trading this in, but I thought I'd see if anyone out there's interested before I do. It's a Trace Elliot 7215 SMC 300W 15" Combo. I've owned it since new in 99 and it's only been gigged a few times so bar a couple of scrapes on the metal grill, it's in incredible nic! This thing is bloody loud! I've never even had the volume past half-way! It pumps out that classic Trace sound. It's a Trace Elliot designed, but built just after the Gibson take over, so it's solid as hell! (thanks for the info dlloyd) Here's a few pics >> Here's the all important serial number too >> I'm hoping for around £350 plus postage, although I don't know what'd cost to post, pick up, or maybe meeting halfway with expenses would be cool too. If anyone has any questions, give me a shout. Cheers, Eude
  7. I know what you mean, I spose it'll all be determined by how close it looks to a Stingray I spose, as it could look weird without it... However, the 20th Anniversary Stringrays don't have pickguards and they do look pretty sweet... I am coming round to the idea of a clear pickguard though! Cheers, Eude
  8. Hey man, welcome to the Shuker family! Looking forward to seeing this one develop, I'm pretty sure that a certain 7 string playing moderator will be more than interested! Quick point though, I wouldn't bother with the scratchplate if I was you, unless you really think it's necessary, would be a shame to cover the Madrone burr, spose a clear plastic one wouldn't be too bad though... I'd go with the LED's though, you might only do this once, so you may as well go the whole hog! Sounds like this is gonna be a beast! Cheers, Eude
  9. Wow Russ, that's gonna be a pretty sweet bass! Can't wait to watch this one develop! Did you get a build time yet? Eude

    Help!
Hey everyone. I recently purchased a Fender Jazz Deluxe USA 5 string from the Bass Cellar, after playing a few at different guitar shows etc, i was decided this was the bass i wanted for fingerstyle playing. However, I seem to have got a duff one, as it just doesn't have any punch to it at all. So, I'm looking for something new. My requirements are: 5 strings, must have a good sound without my amp(I get sick of taking it to gigs!), so 3 band may be helpful. I want seriously good pick punch, but also the ability to have a really midrangey fingertone(similar to a passive fender jazz, only a little clearer). I have £1100 to play with. Throw forth your suggestions!
Hey man, I'd give Jon Shuker a shout ( www.shukerguitars.co.uk ) I'm positive he can hook you up within your budget and will nail your sound requirements no bother at all! Cheers, Eude
  11.
I think you'll be pushed to sell it for much more than £300. Take any offer between £300 - £325. Hamster
That's cool dude. The amp I want to get is only £299 on gak.co.uk , so £300 would be fine, I'm not looking to make a profit, just get something smaller with as little hassle as possible. Thanks to everyone for all the advice and thanks to dlloyd for the history lesson, answered a lot of questions I've had about Trace's history. Cheers, Eude
  12.
The SMC 7 band range came out in January 1998. Gibson acquired Trace in October 1998. Yours is a pre-Gibson design and built under Gibson ownership. The Gibson ownership is unlikely to have had any effect whatsoever on the quality of the amps built by the time yours was.
Ah right, that makes sense dude. Thanks, Eude
  13. Hey guys, thanks very much for your help. Still a little confused about whether it's Pre-Gibson or Gibson, but 300 - 400 is the kinda range I was hoping for! Cheers, Eude
  14. Hey guys, As I've mentioned numerous times over in bassworld, I've finally decided to sell on my Trace Elliot combo for something lighter and more compact. I'm pretty much already set on what I'm going to replace it with, however I'm not really sure what it's worth. I'm probably going to end up trading it in, as the basschat marketplace has been a bit slow of late. Could anyone offer me some advice as to what it's worth?... It's a Trace Elliot 7215 SMC 300W 15" Combo. I'm pretty sure I got it new in 99 and it's pre-gibson, however I might be wrong.. Here's a few pics >> Here's the all important serial number too >> It's seen very very light use, never been even near halfway volume-wise, and only been gigged a few times, only recently too. It's in almost immaculate condition bar a couple of scratches on the metal grill. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Cheers, Eude

    Eude's Feedback

If you could leave a bit of feedback, be it Buy, Sale or Trade, I'd really appreciate it. Cheers, Eude
  16.
How much is the Hartke Kickback 12" and what wattage (compared with the 10)? That's not too bad from my experience. EDIT - er, my experience clearly being quite limited or I'd know those questions. But I do know I liked the sounds it produced!!
Hey man, The Hartke Kickback 12 is 120W which I could live with that, it's also a bit cheaper than the Fender at about £279, but... The Fender has a lot over it specwise >>

It's 30W louder
It's got a tweeter
It's lighter
It's got 2 parametric mid controls in the EQ
It's also got built in compression, which I think I'd miss after moving from my Trace Elliot
It's only £20 more expensive too!
I think I'm already talking myself into it! Eude
  17.
Everything I can think of that price range seems to be with different speaker configurations. Which I guess defeats the object of lightweight somewhat. I can think of a couple Laney combos that are 15" (might be a good thing because as much as I love the sound, they are quiet for their ratings IMO). Other than that, theres maybe the Ashdown Electric Blue (totally different to the Hartke, but maybe a little more like your Trace Elliot) or youre spending a lot more money. Ill let you know if I think of anything perfect.
Cheers man. I'm not too fussed about having that exact speaker config, it's more to do with the weight though. I'll check out what Laney have got though. Eude
  18. I'm looking to get a lightweight kickback style Combo to replace my big Trace Combo. Found recently when gigging in small venues that I can barely hear myself when stood near my amp, although I'm deafening people at the other end of the room! Plus my back is really hating moving the combo by myself! I've since played through a Hartke Kickback 10" and was blown away at how clear the sound was, and how portable the unit was, although it didn't quite cut it for me volume wise. So basically I'm looking for is >> Lightweight - very important About 150W should be enough 12" speaker or a s**t hot 10", maybe a tweeter too Kickback design Line out for PA connection About £300ish Currently I'm pretty much set on a Fender Bassman 150, heard good things about all the Bassman range since Fender acquired SWR. Any suggestions/advice would be greatly appreciated. Cheers, Eude
  19. Holy crap Dave! That thing is awesome! Alan's builds are just getting better and better, you must be so chuffed! (must save up a deposit... must save up a deposit... must save up a deposit...) Cheers, Eude
  20. Wow man! That's one serious bass! Can't wait to see it finished! Eude
  21. Hey tinman, glad you've decided to join us mate, you won't regret it! Really like the look of your specs too. I reckon with the bass body being that small, using mahogany won't make it too heavy, you could maybe even go for walnut, which would add a bit more bite and definition! Mahogany for neck would really warm things up too. The best way to get an idea of the sound would be to have a go of a Gibson bass, maybe an SG or a Thunderbird, they, usually anyway, have mahogany bodies and necks, and a really thick and warm tone as a result. As far as going for a Bolt-On, it's your call, there's a sound difference for sure between bolt-ons and neck through basses, and then a compromise between the two in a set-neck design. I find a bolt-on bass has a snappier, punchier attack where a neck through bass has a slightly more defined mid range and sweeter sustain. I much prefer the sound of a bolt-on, as it's good for getting a nice slap tone. Pickups? Well if you want big big tone, I'd recommend EMG DC's, the only thing is they have a real Hi-Fi sound, so if you want something a bit more rootsy sounding I'd look elsewhere. Maybe you could get two MM style pickups, that'd sound huge! Of course all this info is based on my own experiences, so I might be slightly off the mark, chime in if I'm wrong. One question about the stock bass, is that a new standard shape that Jon is introducing? I really like it. Cheers, Eude
  22. Looking forward to seeing what you're up to Dood... Is this as a result of all that headless GAS you've had recently? Eude
