Hey funkle, you've entered very subjective waters here. I reckon your best bet will be to find a shop with a decent range of basses to try out if you're not willing/able to go custom. There's Red Dog and Guitar Guitar in Edinburgh, but I hear Guitar Guitar in Glasgow are opening a proper bass department soon, so they might be well worth a visit. On a personal note, I REALLY don't think you need to have a 35" scale to achieve a good low B, you just need a well designed and built instrument, but your mileage may vary... Good luck dude! Eude

Have you seen the way Ritter do it? I actually think it may have been JP Basses who did it like this first, but can't find any examples now... You could also maybe do something clever with ferrules? Although that will tie you to using double ball end strings >> I would look for a clamping solution to give you the best choice of strings. Cheers, Ewan

Thanks dude, had a wee listen, just sounds like a nice crispy jazz bass, no tone loss whatsoever with the shorter scale I think I have one more bass in me, once my next one lands (an ACG Krell SC E Type 6 string, headless, fretless), I think I might have to see if Alan at ACG will make me a Jazz type bass in 31.5" flavour, my preferred scale length these days. I might add, I've since dialled in the strings on the 6 string, with a custom made Newtone set, a little lighter than I would usually go for with a taperwound B. It's even more playable now, my shorter scale 4 ACG has the same set now too, but the 33" 5er seems to like things a little heavier. Eude

The B's are great on my basses, and the longest scale I have is 33"! I've had a few ACGs come and go as I've balanced GAS issues and figured out what I really want in a bass, and all of them have had amazing B strings, and again all of them previously have been 33" scale. My 6 string is actually 31.5" scale, and the low B is ridiculously good, especially when you factor in the scale! My 5er has 18mm spacing and a 45mm nut, both standard for ACGs, my 6 string is actually 16.5mm spacing, bit of a hangover from playing Warwick basses, but makes for super fast finger style playing. All my basses have the asymmetric neck shape and flat fingerboard too, again standard ACG stuff and I don't see myself ever going back to 'old fashioned' style stuff now.
