1. Hey guys, up for sale is my ACG Finn SC fretless 5 string. It’s no secret that I’m a massive ACG fan, I’m only selling this to fund a new more suitable build (shorter scale and with more strings), so absolutely no trades please :-) This bass is absolutely beautiful with a sound to match. It has a 33” scale which makes it easier to play than a 34” and brings a nice sweetness to the upper register, without sacrificing any tension on a the low B as the thing is so bloody well made! It's a set neck and has a lovely carved heel providing great access to all the notes at the dusty end. The body is deeper than normal, 50mm, however it’s chambered which I believe really adds some warm and presence particularly suited to a fretless bass. Here’s some sound samples >> https://soundcloud.c...retless-samples - apologies for the playing... The bass has ACG's EQ03 filter preamp, it's a veritable swiss army knife, allowing you to really dial in on that perfect fretless tone. It has two low filters, one per pickup which lets you set up the bass for two extremely different sounds, or blend the two for a really complex and detailed tone. You can read more about ACG's filter preamps here >> http://www.acguitars...es/electronics/ and you can download the PDF instructions for the preamp here >> http://www.acguitars...df/ACG_EQ03.pdf In simple terms the preamp takes the best of Wal and Alembic filter preamps and really delivers a useful and powerful way to discover great tones. It's currently strung with DR Sunbeams, but I have some Fender flats cut to length which I can include or fit instead. The bass is pretty much mint, it has been played a fair bit but has never been gigged. There’s some marking on the fingerboard from playing with round wounds (basses are made to be played though), however I’ll give the fingerboard a nice oiling before it goes out. Here’s the specs >> Top: Tasmanian Burl Myrtle Accent: 4mm Sycamore Body: American Cherry Chambered Neck: 5 Piece Maple/Bubinga with gently rounded asymmetrical profile Fingerboard: Ebony with Maple fret lines and zero (flat) radius Scale: 33” Pickups: 2 ACG Overwound Single Coils Preamp: ACG EQ03 4K Filter with low battery indicator Hardware: Hipshot A Type Bridge and Gotoh Resolite Tuners (Black) Weight: 9.15lbs (4.15kg) Price includes a Hiscox hardcase, but I can supply a Fusion F1 gigbag for an additional £50, and won’t ship without one or the other. Shipping to UK only, at this stage, at buyers cost, but will consider shipping overseas. Price: £1300 - again, no trades please! UPDATE with some pics >> You can see more piccies on ACG's website >> http://www.acguitars...tless-5-string/ Any questions, requests etcs, let me know! Cheers, Eude

    Gone

Ha ha, that would be nice! There's not really any guitar shops worth visiting round my way, and I'm not going to lug them all up to the Bass Gallery - they've probably had someone try something similar before anyway ;-) Eude

  4.
They look fantastic! How do they manage it with the prices they charge?! Or is it that we are used to overinflated prices....
I expect their overheads are smaller than some folks making similar instruments in other countries, for now at least, but I also think that some production line assembled basses, won't name names here, charge WAY too much for their instruments, but get away with it, so keep it going. I personally could never justify spending more money on something like that when you could have a bass custom made by hand for less! Eude
  5.
In the UK? Jon Shuker Maruszczyk will be cheaper though
My guess would be about 50% cheaper! Eude
  6.
That's mine! Saves me doing a video review
Most jealous :-)
  7. Well this came out nice then >> https://youtu.be/98DGvbJZglA :-) Eude
  8.
This thread is giving me inappropriate thoughts about buying another Warwick....
That's a though that's never far from my mind, but I'll need arm extensions first, to really enjoy a Thumb Bass :-( Eude
  9.
Modulus had a more even tonal range but the Warwick just sounded better to me. Would take either tho. Roscoe and the Specter just didn't do it for me at all. Dave
I know what you mean about the Warwick not being as even, however, the two different registers had the perfect voice for each section in the song. You want your lower end to be fat, warm and punchy, and your upper noodley bots to be sweet and clear. I think the two voices make the Warwick all the better Eude
  10.
I don't like the titled body on the elwood, but now I'm definitely going to look into asking about a 6 string Jake now when I get the cash together though.
I really like the Jazzus, I reckon this would look great as a 6 string >> Eude
  11.
I wish they made jake 6 strings.
They've made loads! http://public-peace.de/index.php/bass-guitars/maruszczyk/elwood/6-string http://public-peace.de/index.php/bass-guitars/maruszczyk/elwood-absolution/6-string http://public-peace.de/index.php/bass-guitars/maruszczyk/elwood-europe/6-string http://public-peace.de/index.php/bass-guitars/maruszczyk/elwood-l/6-string I like this one in particular >> They've done at least one 6 string Jake too >> http://www.talkbass.com/threads/new-bass.966420/ Eude
  12. Like Skelf mentioned, string technology, has come a long way, as has luthier's knowledge and ability to build to a specific requirement, in my opinion. These advances have really made almost anything possible. I'm very lucky to own a couple of 31.5" scale ACG basses, one of which is a 6 string headless tuned B to C! The low B is tight and punchy and the upper register has a real sweetness and fuller sound that you can only get with a shorter scale. It's very easy to play, reasonably lightweight for a 6 string bass and fits in a guitar gigbag! It's the best of both worlds. The build quality and custom string set make this kind of bass possible, and it really makes me wonder whether it's worth even persevering with the whole 34" or even 35" scale is best for bass argument. You can hear a few sound samples of the bass in question here >> https://soundcloud.com/eudeboy/sets/acg-salace-sc-e-type-samples I'm now currently plotting a 6 string headless fretless in 31.5" to match Eude
  13. Fantastic news mate! Your family are a nice bunch I'll be watching this build closely. Eude
  14. Actually, this Custom Shop Thumb BO has a similar hue to the tone >> https://youtu.be/V-bu9T1xuEE That one has a Swamp Ash body with a weird funky coloured in top, so the sound has to be the neck, fingerboard and pickup position, as that's consistent on that and the bass in the comparison vid. Eude
  15.
My experience with it was that I couldn't use the bridge pickup alone, even with the (very powerful) preamp set so that it shouldn't be a thin sound. Which was a real pain for me as I generally prefer the sound of a bridge pickup. The twin Jazz pickup was just way too close to solo. Just remembered I made this when I was trying to sell mine. It's literally just me pissing around playing whatever came to my head so don't expect an actual decent demo. All plugged straight into audacity. Ignore my shoddy playing too!
Thank you very much for this mate. I see what you mean, the classic Warwick tone just ain't there, at all. Having said that though, it still sounds very nice. It's got a very rich complex tone. It sounds really lovely on your Mr Bungle play along video.
Great video & nice playing. Another vote for the Warwick, the tone just blows the others out the water for me. I've kind of gone off their looks in recent years (favouring more "traditional" styling now) but there is just something about the sound that still works very well - I don't know what it is that's making the difference, part of me thinks it's the neck-wood's they use but I'm sure someone more knowledgeable will be able to say what is is exactly.
I think you're right, the neck cover the largest amount of real estate under the strings, so that and the fingerboard are likely to be adding the magic. I also think the Thumb pickup placement can't hurt when it comes to adding a bit more punch too. Eude
  16. Hmmm, always wondered about the Dirty Blonde's sound. Was the bridge pickup any use, or was it a little too close to the bridge to be used on its own? Funny, you don't see many of the higher profile Warwick players with that particular bass, the only one I saw was Weezer's bassist, and given thae most of the time he plays a P Bass, it makes perfect sense now! Eude
  17.
It does. I say that as someone who has owned an 8lb thumb bass with an Ash body and Maple neck. It did have different pickup configuration which of course changes the tone considerably but even unplugged. The bubinga thumb bass sounded like a thumb bass. The other one just didn't. Great bass right enough...just not for me.
Did you have a Dirty Blonde then? Always wondered what they sounded like, fairly 'normal' then? Eude
  18.
Tonewood makes a helluva difference, not matter what anyone says. If that thumb weighed 8lb, was made of ash and had a maple neck, totally different sounding bass. However, at 11lb plus, Bubinga and wenge, it sound like that. Blooming beautiful.
That Spector certainly won't be lightweight though, maple body! Amazing to hear the difference, its clearly not just the weight of the wood. I reckon the wenge neck must have the biggest impact on the sound. Eude
  19. I used to wear mine pretty low to get it to hang right, but that can limit technique a little too. They are pretty heavy too, but you kinda get used to that. That tone though, sublime... Eude
  20.
It's actually made me have GAS for a thumb bass again...
My Thumb GAS will never go away, but man alive I don't miss the awful balance and reach to 1st position. They're gorgeous basses and incredible sounding instruments, but they don't fit short arses like myself so well... Eude
  21. So it looks like the Warwick has gone down the best, with the majority at least. What do you reckon it's doing right? Is it the pickup placement? That's the only obvious difference, bar the fact it's a 34" scale when the others are 35". Eude
  22.
It didn't seem it, they were great for finger style but not deep enough for slap or Motown/soul. But that's just my opinion.
Cool, I get you then mate. I'm making do with my couple of 1x10s for now, considering moving them on for a bigger cabinet, but probably not really worth it for now. Only really playing at home at the moment, and having a little 1x10 that sits under my desk is great, and the spare doesn't exactly take up much room, so it's actually quite a family/wife friendly setup Really keen to hear how you get on with the new gear though. I've had a play with Merton's RM800 and I was very impressed! It's also an extremely handsome rig. Eude
  23.
Will keep updating as my time with it goes on, but the instant 15" 'whumpf' was back, and I'm so relieved to have it back.
I take it the Mi12s didn't push out as much bass then? Eude
  24.
You know you want to
You are a terrible terrible influence...
  25. Thanks for posting! Love the sound of the Warwick over the others by a mile. Another thing to note that the 34" low B wasn't any less focused or punchy than the 35" ones, to my ear at least. Cheers, Eude
