it's taken a few months of research and getting advice on here, but yes I've found 'the one' I just can;t believe how well made Alan;s basses are, simply the best instrument i've ever had... I feel blessed and glad i listened to everyone on here!! now to find a really nice amp to make it sing even more
Fantastic news. Alan does make exceedingly good fretless basses Eude

Extremely elegant that bass. So I take it this is filled the void in your life then?

Congrats mate! It's a gorgeous bass! Pics would be nice, when you get a moment. meantime though, enjoy the new bass
No specs as yet, I'm just trying to see what the build time will be and if Paul's got the capacity to take it on right now. Last time I spoke to him he was concentrating on trying to get some stock instruments together. Definitely a matched headstock and edgelines like my MK1... I'm still thinking i'd like to go trans white, showing the grain, maybe over sycamore... early days though, I haven't actually placed an order yet. Yes I did think about tuning BEAD but I think i'd have to get a new nut etc and I'm wary of modifying it in anyway... In the meantime I think the chances of a fretless sixer becomign available are zero so I may have to trade the MK1 for a fiver...
Trans white sounds cool and a very nice contrast to your fretted 6er. You never know, if you catch them at the right time, perhaps you can talk them into building a stock fretless 6er in trans white Reckon you could easily have the bass modded and modded back as necessary if you get a proper luthier to look at it. You're in Camden I assume, the guys are the bass gallery should be able to sort you out Eude
I've discovered I need a fretless with a low B for my new project... I'm having to choose which songs to play fretless on based on which key they are in rather than which song I actually want to play fretless on... There is but one solution... I've emailed Paul about building me a fretless sixer
Wow, that's exciting. Care to share some specs? Quick question though, if you need it now, how long will it take to appear? Could you tune your 4 string BEAD? Eude
The more time I spend on this bass, the more convinced I am it's the best playing fretless I have ever had, which given the number I've owned is quite the compliment!
Alan knows how to put a fretless together, not sure how he does it, but fretless ACGs really are something special. Really glad you're enjoying the bass mate! Eude

Woes of a flobby B - anything that can improve the situation?
eude replied to Naetharu's topic in Bass Guitars
I've played 36" basses with significantly worse B strings than on any of my 33" basses I've had, and I took delivery of a 31.5" 6 string this week and the low B on it is great! All I'm saying is a longer the B string doesn't necessarily a better low B, there are SO many other things in play. I intend to do some recordings of my new short scale 6 soon to prove my point...
First I'm going to need some new trousers, as I've gotten all overexcited. Second, I'm going to need a couple of grand to order one of my own!
Thanks mate, it's worth every penny and more!
Cracking bass dude
Cheers buddy, hopefully you can have a go on it very soon.
I used to be the same but Alan makes some of the prettiest single cuts on the market. Just seems to get all the proportions right. This is one of the best he has done.
Thanks mate, I had a hand in the design We did a headed version of the body style too which I think would work equally well. It's a very ergonomic design, so it balances beautify on the lap, and on a strap. Eude

Congratulations mate! Fantastic bass you've got there! I'm a massive ACG fan, and the filter preamps are just ridiculously good, just wait till you try the DFM version you get in the custom and uber basses... Enjoy! Eude

Thanks mate, it's one of those marmite things, but this one might turn a few folks. (P.S. I hate marmite...) Eude

The low B on this bass is silly considering the scale length?! The string gauges are 130 110 90 70 50 36 I think the higher 5 strings could be a shade lighter, maybe 130 105 85 65 45 30 They're custom wound by Netwtone strings for the shorter scale. Weight wise, it's sub 9 lbs, so VERY light for a 6 string, even with the weight ETS hardware on it. Eude
Nice! Intrigued to hear how that short scale works with a 6 string. Detailed review please
Well with excellent design and construction, strung with custom wound strings with heavier cores the string tension is pretty much the same as it is on my 33" basses. A more detailed review, as requested, will come in time, along with some sound samples, just a quick note though, it sounds like a rhinoceros sized modern jazz bass off the bat, enormous, crispy and punchy Eude

Wow, I'm a lucky sod! I took delivery of another ACG bass today. A Salace E Type 6 String Headless Shortscale - that's a mouthful! Designed to be lightweight and superbly ergonomic without going down the weird shaped ergo guitar route. Not got much time just now, but here's the brief spec... 6 String tuned B to C 31.5" Scale Koa Top Spruce Core Mahogany Back 3 piece Ash Neck Cocobolo Fingerboard ETS Bridge Unit with 16.5mm spacing ACG Custom Headpiece ACH FB Pickups East Uni-Pre preamp So far I don't think I could be more impressed! Have a look... QUICK UPDATE! Here's some rough sound samples I've uploaded to Soundcloud. https://soundcloud.com/eudeboy/sets/acg-salace-sc-e-type-samples The bass is still amazing, by the way Eude
"more expensive basses have been built with better attention to detail, which is why string tension can be better" Nope sorry Eude can't agree with this generalisation, many expensive basses use pretty standard parts from Schaller, Hipshot etc etc. Their break angle being no different from an inexpensive bass.
OK, well the well cut and set up nut still stands, no? To be fair when I said "cheaper bass", I mean really cheap, an inexpensive instrument without branded hardware from Schaller, Hipshot etcs. -
Does the string break angle over the nut (and therefore also at the bridge) have any effect on string tension? I have basses with headstocks at various angles but I don't know why there is such a range of difference between them.
Yup, break angle on the bridge saddle and at the nut makes a massive difference to how a string sounds and even feels in some cases. In my experience, more expensive basses have been built with better attention to detail, which is why string tension can be better. There's no reason why you couldn't buy a cheaper bass and strike it lucky though, or even take a duffer and have it tweaked and set up properly by someone who knows what they're doing and end up with a belter. massive lack of decent midrange active fretless basses with lines
eude replied to zawinul's topic in Bass Guitars
You could pop this into any bass and see if the ACG filter pre might be for you? http://basschat.co.uk/topic/271257-acg-dual-pickup-filter-pre-amp/page__p__2886357 That's the simpler SEQ version, but its still very flexible and would give you a taster of how the full thing works... Eude -

eude replied to zawinul's topic in Bass Guitars
You know what, there's a fair bit of mid range adjustment available with the Standard Series preamp, you can get quite a wah like sweep. I'll try and get a quick recording to illustrate it this week. It obviously won't be nearly as wide a sweep as with an DFM filter preamp, and you can't effect the pickups independently, but it might peak your interest. You could always buy a Standard Series bass now and add a filter preamp once you've saved up a little, plus I'm fairly sure the Standard Series basses take a little less time to make than the Customs, especially if you pick a body from stock... Eude -
Congrats mate, that really is a beautiful bass! The EQ set up on these basses is a real eye opener, I have the same in my 4 string ACG and you can get a massive variety in passive using just the pickup selector. The active controls are really powerful too. Enjoy the bass, I know I would! Eude
I think this is what i'm looking for!!! is that available as a standard though, i doubt it is, so it means big bucks but still prolly worth it!!
The filter preamps aren't available in the Standard Series basses, but you could go for a Standard and an EQ01 separately, either direct from ACG, or if you can find a second hand one for sale somewhere, they do pop up every now and again. Eude -
Custom is an option I'm considering. The SR1206 I tried was ok regarding the string spacing but the neck was a little bit to thick. It sounded very nice though.
Another, cheaper option, might be to find a bass you like at the bridge end, like the SR1206 you found and have the neck modified, or even just just get a new neck made for the body? I know Shuker have built custom necks for various purposes in the past. Cheers, Eude

My suggestion would be to speak to ACG. I had Alan make me a 33" 6 string custom made with a 50mm nut and 16.5mm spacing, it was VERY comfortable, I've never really understood why 6 string necks have such wide nuts. Your average 5 string bass has a 45mm nut, yet 6 string basses seem to be 55mm and up! Why add a whole 10mm for a skinny little C string!?... As far as sub 16.5mm bridge spacing, I think you'll have to go for monorail style things like on the GV bass, or perhaps the Kahler unit mentioned above, although ETS also custom make all their hardware, so they would likely be able to produce something to your liking too. Best of luck, but I'm fairly sure if you can't find an Ibanez GV bass, custom will be your only option. Cheers, Eude
