I've got a few 33" basses and have owned several others, 4, 5 and 6 string flavours and I've never found the low B to be lacking whatsoever. I moved to 33" for very similar reasons and would recommend trying a shorter scale length to anyone! 32", might be pushing it a little depending on who has made it, but a good luthier can make it work, and it'll be even better if you play with a lighter touch. Who is the maker in question? ACG recently built a 32" 6 string Harlot (MkII) ( http://www.acguitars.co.uk/acg_admin/wordpress/portfolio/0152-harlot-mkii-6-short-scale/ ) and the low B on that was just right, it wouldn't stand any death metal chugalug style playing, but for finger style and a bit of slap, it's great. An incredibly comfortable instrument, and its available too It'd be mine if I had funds available and didn't already have an ACG 6er... Eude

Dood, that looks awesome! Great work! I did wonder what you were up to... I'll bet that sounds beastly. What are you planning for the preamp? Eude

That is going to be a very nice looking bass mate! Amazing Eude

I popped Fender flats on my ACG Fretless 5 and I'm VERY impressed! I'd also recommend SIT Silencers for a more modern fretless tone, they really are wonderful strings and feel fantastic, but if you want a more uprighty tone, I think the Fenders are a very good shout. I found a 5 string set from Ebay for about £20. Eude

The Mi12 looks pretty bargainiferous. I went for 2 Mi10s, but part of me thinks I could've gotten away with just one Mi12...
Best tones in bass, good idea.
Well, it won't get the growl and sizzle you get from a modern jazz bass setup, but my 6 string can get that in spades, but this should cover everything else. The preamp will be switchable active/passive, so I should hopefully be able to get a pretty good version of a passive P Bass along with an active MM tone. I imagine combined, it could sound enormous Oh, I'm hoping to have the MM style pickup switchable too, series/parallel/singlecoil too, so if should get close to a PJ too Eude
Woohoo! Another build thread to watch? This is becoming a bit of a habit. Therapy needed.
Haven't actually started one yet, but it's on my to do list!

Nice one mate! I have an ACG being built right now and I'm planning on having one pickup in the MM position and one in the PB position, trying to ape the tones of both a Musicman and Precision bass in one, I expect the layout will end up similar to what you have there, if a positioned a little closer to the neck. Eude

Well that came out nice Congrats mate. How do you like the pickup location? I appreciate it's early days of course... Eude
Thanks dudes. I thought about it loads before decidin, and if it's anything like my graft finn then it'll be amazing. I chose a 33" for the obvious ease of playing benifits, weight saving and the added tonal pallette it'll give in conjunction with the bridge pickup being moved slightly further away from the bridge. I'm already counting down the days.
You're gonna love the 33" scale mate. It sweetens the upper register without sacrificing anything on your low E, and it really does make things that little bit more comfortable. The change isn't that noticeable but you're hands will thank you on long gigs and you'll find you can play some things you couldn't previously... Eude
Well it's here... And I am very impressed. Instant classic Ashdown tone (if that's not your thing, this really isn't the amp for you), very warm (not muddy) but with plenty of grit and bite if you want it. Excellent drive control, despite the absence of any valves, and very reminiscent of my old ABM 500 but without the size and weight. I've been using a Mibass for a while and really haven't got on with it - the comprehensive EQ and tone shaping isn't something I need and I found myself constantly twiddling the knobs and sliders. With the Rootmaster, it sounds great straight away, before the EQ is even adjusted. It's heavier than the other lightweight amps I've owned (GK, Markbass, Ashdown) but it is a bit larger. I'm not even sure if it is in the same category as those, but it's certainly much lighter than the ABM. So far I've only played it indoors but so far I'm really chuffed. I think Ashdown are on to a winner here, and I'm very happy. Live test on Saturday!
Nice one mate! I nearly went for one of these but ended up going for the MiBass 2.0, don't make me regret it What cabs you planning on using with this? I reckon a Rootmaster 420 and a Mi12 cab would make a really great gigging/rehearsal set up! Edue

Very nice mate! I've had similar plans in the past, that's a really nice looking J Type Nice choice in the scale length too Eude

Chapman Guitars ML-B, Case anyone's interested ;)

I agree with the comments above. The bridge needs to be moved much closer to the end of the body, the left hand reach is going to be too far to be comfortable, I'd also slim that nut right down to a nice Jazz Bass width (37mm?) On the whole, its a really nice looking bass at a very good price point, but I wouldn't go near it without the above being addressed, personally... Just my 2p. Eude -
Nice one, looking forward to hearing how you get on. I recently bought the MiBass 2.0 head and 2 x Mi10 cabs, and so far I'm VERY pleased with it. I'm not in any danger of trying it all out in a live situation at the moment, but I'm confident it'll be more than fine Eude
Cheers Eude , the weight may be an issue , but that is rather nice ! Love the colour
If weight is an issue, you should check out the Mi12 cab then. The Mi10 is proper light, and the 12 isn't that much heavier, although it is a fair bit bigger. It'd be a very good match for your MiBass 2.0 and you can always add a second cab is necessary?... Cheers, Eude

How about one of these? http://www.andertons.co.uk/bass-guitar-amps/pid31441/cid561/ashdown-vs115-1-x-15-bass-cab.asp If weight isn't an issue, might be perfect.
Thanks Eude , I'm a complete beginner when it comes to rigs , I've only ever had combo's so its all new to me really . but this looks and sounds like it could be a bit tasty . I like a warm old school type sound ,Classic Rock style I suppose . My combo at the mo is a Marshall MB150 . I like the Ashdown sound , having tried a Rig in a local music shop and thought this might be worth a try at £300 . I'm not gigging but the bands guitarist who I jam with has a Blackstar 120 watt amp which can get pretty loud . I'm wondering what size cab I would need to enable the MiBass to hold its own , as gigging may arise at some point . The blurb says 640 watt max I think ..? That might be a tad overkill but maybe around 300 - 400 watt ?
The amp will do that classic rock sound for sure. Check out the video at the bottom of this review >> http://www.premierguitar.com/articles/20085-ashdown-mibass-20-and-mi12-cabinet-reviews Ignore the review's comments about the lack of a 4 ohm output though, it'll deliver 4 ohms if you connect up 2 8 ohm cabs... I'm fairly sure it'll do 4 ohms if you connect up a single 4 ohm cab too. My advice would be to get a single cab for now, perhaps a Mi12? You could always add another to get the full juice out of it. Just a note, its 640W absolute peak, with distortion, but it can't produce that continuously, so it's actually a 440W amp, which is more than enough for most reasonable applications. Oh, and if your guitarist is using all 120W of that amp for a jam he needs his ears syringed, bloody hell! Eude

Hey mate, I recently got one, and 2 Mi10 cabs to go with it, I'm very happy with it too. It seems plenty loud, although I haven't put it up against a live band yet. The amp has a nice natural tone to it, keeping the gain clean its quite hifi, but you can crank the gain for some lovely overdrive which gives you a much warmer old school tone. The EQ section is simple and doesn't make any extreme changes, it's quite subtle but I like it, not a big fan of massive over the top EQs anyway. The headphone out/aux in is very useful. Its small, light and built like a tiny tank, plus you get a 5 year warranty, what's not to like?! Eude
