1.
Sad day...I just can't cope with the 33" scale for some reason so it's heading off back to alan :-(
That's a real shame dude. How long did you give it? Might take a little while to become accustomed to it...
 2. If you fancy something a bit different and would consider a custom made bass, ACG would build you a mean passive 4 string from their Graft range within that budget - check 'em out >> www.acguitars.co.uk You'd have a fair few options too, a choice of shapes, type of pickup etc. If you want something more trad, I'd look to G&L or perhaps Lakland. 3.
Hi, folks! After having played these two beauties for several months, and having been stunned by their qualities, I sold my Alembic ( yes, sir!) and ordered Patrick another bass : a long scale maple fingerboard, ash body with a wenge top, headless, 4 strings, this time, ... Back to basics, I would say! ;-) Here is the latest pic of the crafting in progress... Hope you will enjoy it! 599210_616785818347907_443628456_n.jpg Cheers from the other side ! ;-)
Brilliant! Another gorgeous bass
 4.
Yeah and oddly enough the prototype is in a red case just not got an idea of an eta on it being released.
Fair enough, but if the insurance company will be paying Matamp directly, could you just keep some credit open with them and snap the head up when it's ready?
 5. So sorry to hear about your gear being robbed, some people need drowning, but you're doing the right thing in looking to the positive and planning more gear I like the sound of sorting out 2 x 4x10's from you 8x10, to run with a new GT200, and maybe see if they can perhaps voice it along the lines of what you're used to? Another thought: weren't Matamp working on a valve fronted class D head, similar in design to the Orange Bass Terror? Surely that, if its available soon, and your 2x12 would be a magic little rig when you need to travel light? Eude
 6. I've used the Fender combo in rehearsal studios down here in London and it is SO much louder than it should be and has a nice chunky tone to it, if I had to replace my set up with something cheaper I would certainly consider it, but check out this one too >> http://www.gak.co.uk/en/warwick-bc-80/53240 A mate of mine put this into the small room in his rehearsal studio near Edinburgh and says its fantastic, lovely sound, solid build quality, easily keeps up with a drummer too. Eude
 7. I used to run a MarkBass LM 250 with a single Aguilar GS112 cab, think that put out about 150W and it was just fine for small gigs, you could probably pick up something similar for about £500 secondhand on here, but for that you could nearly get a new PF 350 with a matching Portaflex cab... Eude
 8. Seems a PF 350 head >> http://www.soundsliveshop.com/p/Ampeg_PF-350_Portaflex_Amplifier_Bass_Head/AMPEG-PF-350 would sit nicely on top of an SVT 210 Cab >> http://www.soundsliveshop.com/p/Ampeg_SVT-210AV_Bass_Speaker_Cab/AMPEG-SVT210AV Would work out a little more than your budget but worth thinking about for sure! Eude
 9. Hey mate, nice to see you back on here and great to know you're still rocking the Pub Bass! I do miss that bass sometimes I have to say and there's a similarly specced jazz on my bass bucket list should I ever win the lottery... If you're looking for an Ampeg'y sound with a smaller footprint and budget, how about this mini stack?... http://www.andertons.co.uk/bass-amp-heads/pid23203/cid685/ampeg-micro-cl-stack-100w-2x10.asp Perfect for bedroom use and it'd be fine for quiet gigs I reckon. Eude
 10.
For the "coffee shop" gigs you describe, you'll not do better than a PJB Briefcase IMHO
Thats a very good call! Markbass have just announced a MiniMark 802 Combo too, http://www.markbass.it/product_detail.php?id=241 - might be worth a look?
 11.
Well, I got a new P3110 from Thomann and it lasted 20 minutes before dying. Its replacement lasted longer but wasn't loud enough - 150W or so on its own (300W with an extension speaker. So, I'm sort of off Prometheans at the moment.
I meant the older model, which is about 300W at 8 Ohms, I think, and I also said "a good one" as there were a lot of faulty versions of that too. I've not heard of anyone keeping hold of their P3110s though, they all seem to be shoddy, but the P5110 model, assuming its a good one, is amazing! It'll be a long time before I part with mine Eude
 12.
Ah cool, I forgot you were so close! Thanks for that d(e)ude, I may just have to take you up on that offer and show off my incredibly poor ability! 33" might be OK, I was thinking more 32" or even 30.5"....
Don't stress man, I'm SO out of practice since I became a Dad, I imagine you plodding out Smoke On The Water would have me in tears... Send me a PM if you fancy a visit at some point. If you're only looking for something more compact rather than specifically a shorter scale, I think you'll be very pleased if you have a shot of my ACG Finns... I have to say I think 30.5" might be pushing it a little, unless you adjust your technique a little. I know Roscoe made a 30" 6er recently and Gard, who makes them, said it had a pretty good low B, if you make some playing adjustments, which I assume he meant playing a little lighter. Eude
 13.
I might have almost concluded the deal for another ACG I just 'happened' to be browsing Alan's 'available now' pages when I spotted this beauty! (I'll do my own photos when it arrives next week!) http://www.acguitars...k/Available/46/ Tasmanian Burl Myrtle top with 4mm Sycamore accent and American Cherry chambered body. 5 piece Maple/Bubinga neck with Ebony fingerboard with Maple fret lines. 24 fret / 33" scale / zero radius. Two ACG FB Humbuckers in to an ACG EQ03 4K. Low battery indicator. Satin finish.
Wow!? Really? Nice work matey. It's a truly lovely bass that one, I think you'll be VERY happy with it Eude
 14. If you can get hold of a good Ibanez Promothean 5110 Combo you'd be laughing, it'd suit your needs perfectly!
 15. As you know I play 33" basses, ACGs as it happens, 4, 5 and 6 string, no problems with floppy strings here. I reckon you could go to 32", or possibly even 31.5" without it being noticeably floppy, unless you play VERY hard. How short are you thinking of going? There's likely to be all sorts of arguments about how scale length effects string vibration etc., some substantiated with physics and some just plain insane, it's been done to death a million times, so I'm not going to bother chiming in on that, but one thing you can try to tighten things up is change to a string that's a little tighter in feel, I've always found hex wound DRs tighter than their round wound ones. You can also go up a string gauge too. I went from 0.125 0.100 0.080 etc up to 0.130 0.105 0.085 etc. when I first started on 33" basses, but I've pretty much gone back now. I know Alan would build you an amazing shorty if you choose to go with ACG. If you want to try out a 33", you're more than welcome to pop over, I'm in sunny South Croydon/Sanderstead. Cheers, Eude
 16.
Hi Eude, I'm in danger of becoming the Ramp anorak here, ha ha. I find both very ramps stable, and rest my thumb on each, pretty much every time I play. Also, I took the ramp off the Bolt-On Percetion a while ago, and it was fine, no damage to the finish. Most of the force applied to the ramp is 'downwards' i.e. across the tape, so it is very stable. hope that helps. RK
Very helpful mate I'm thinking about trying a ramp on my custom 6er, was just a little worried about damaging the finish, especially seeing as it's got a lovely Ziracote top, similar to yours! Thank you and enjoy yer bass! Eude
 17.
You need a Dingwall in your arsenal... oh dear I seem to have one for sale! However, to address your original question - I've owned USA and Euro Spectors and I have to say that if you are looking at the Steinberger shaped models you may as well include the Warwick Streamer in your options; there are more similarities than differences and you may just find that the 'W' suits you better than the original... Spector!
+1 here, I actually find Streamers nicer to play and I've never seen a Warwick that didn't have impeccable build quality. There's some amazing secondhand bargains to be had on here and the new Korean built Pro Series look to be phenomenal value for money, and I'm amazed that this >> http://basschat.co.uk/topic/196981-fs-ww-ps-streamer-lx4-white-as-new-615l-till-monday/ is still here... Eude
 18. One more >> http://basschat.co.uk/topic/203331-fender-squier-japan-1984-a-series-32-precision-medium-scale-mij/ Medium scale might not be what you're looking for, but its a lot closer to the kind of basses you've been playing before... Eude
 19. Sorry to hear about your issues One more for the mix... http://www.thomann.de/gb/warwick_corvette_basic_short_scale_nt.htm
 20.
To be honest, as much as I like Shuker and ACG, I don't want to try the custom route. I am not sure why!
Fair doos mate, Well the Euro Spector 4's on Bass Direct's site certainly look very nice.
 21.
Hi Mark, yes, the ramp is fixed with double-sided tape rather than by mechanical fixing, so it can be removed if the need arises. I have one on each of my basses, both fixed the same way. Very secure, but still removable. I didn't realise how much work goes into a ramp, Martin sands down the ramp to fit flush with the pickups. (I also didnt realise he was making this one to match the body layers, with Walnut under Ziricote). Brilliant work. RK
Hey mate, lovely bass! Quick question for you, when fixing a ramp with double sided tape, is it secure enough to use as an anchor for your thumb, as you would a pickup? Also, is there any risk to the finish of the bass?... Thanks! Eude
 22. +1 for Lakland. I remember being blown away by Funkle's Skyline 44-02 a few year's back. Very nice to play and a great modern aggressive tone, particularly from the bridge pickup. I've never been the biggest fan of the look of those particular basses, but the sound and playability more than made up for that! Spectors are fine fine instruments, incredibly well made and pretty reasonable value for money when you compare them to others in a similar ballpark. My only problem with them has been the reach required to play 1st position, if you're shorter than average, like myself, you might find them quite uncomfortable to play. You've talked previously about maybe trying for a custom bass, maybe now's the time? My vote would be for an ACG, but you seem more of a classic style guy, bar the bongo, so maybe a Shuker J or P might be a good idea? Jon would build you something pretty awesome for around, or maybe even less than the cost of a similarly specc'd Spector. There's obviously the issue of the wait, but his times seem to be much improved lately. Having owned a custom Shuker modern style Jazz I can confirm it nearly played itself, the nicest Jazz bass I've ever owned! Eude
 23. My vote would be for the ACG, but I'm a little biased, however you're used to having a 5 string, then I guess it would have to be the Sadowsky. The vote for buying an ACG 5 string isn't a bad one though, there's some gorgeous stock ones available right now, which would give you a bit more flexibility than the Sadowsky with your preferred build quality... Eude
 24.
I may see about getting the neck profile to be similar to my ACG too
Smart move
