1.
The Pi looks interesting, but the MiBass 2.0 is a disaster waiting to happen IMO. For a start, they have removed everything that made the MiBass 1 interesting (parametric mids, separate lo and hi mid controls etc), and left us with this 5 knob box. Also, it is not 640W. It is 400W RMS (640W Peak), and that raises some suspicion from me tbh. Why would they quote the peak wattage? Ofcourse, if it is good then all is fine with me, but it is a shaky start.
I prefer a bit of simplicity, but I think it's a mistake to not include low mid and high mid controls. Perhaps its some kind of clever tone stack thing though, like they have on the tube series amps... 400W would be more than enough for me anyway, but you're right, cheeky even mentioning 640W. Eude
 2.
I like the look of that! But confused why they need to update the MiBass already though...
I think the MiBass "1.0" was a little fractured, there wasn't a big enough price difference between the 220 and 550 models and I think the original list price of the 550 was a little too high, to compete with MarkBass and GenzBenz they need to undercut to get people's attention. I think this might be why they consolidated it to one model. They should really rethink their Mi10 cab too, it should be 8 Ohms, not 4, very very silly...
Maybe they're looking for something that ticks all the boxes like the Ibanez Promethean did, which became a classic amp pretty quickly. The MiBass and the little giants etc haven't.
I think you're right, they're trying this until it sticks. They hit the class D market VERY early on, which everyone seems to forget, with the Superfly head, they also came out with super compact lightweight cabs to match and a 1x10 combo with a removable head (ala Promethean >> http://www.dolphinmusic.co.uk/shop_image/product/28202-ashdown-superfly-c10h-large.jpg ), but I think they were a little too early with it, as it didn't seem to catch on till GenzBenz did it with their Shuttle range. I love my Promethean, but I love new stuff too and I really would like to have an entirely British setup, my basses are by ACG from Moffat, Scotland, my cab is an EAD, from Chorley and I would love a head from the UK too. Having said that, the Promethean leaves some pretty big boots to fill, whatever I end up with it will need to be reasonably powerful and have the all important, DI, aux in and headphone out, I can't live without that now! I really like the look of this new "Pie" head, and pie for that matter, but it might just be a prototype, as I guess it kind of muddies the water a bit alongside the new MiBass 2.0. Eude
 3.
Ashdown. LOL. Why can't they just come up with a good-looking amp that wins on all fronts, market it properly and stick with it for a while?
I think that's pretty cool looking personally. I think they have their core range, ABM, MAG etc which hasn't changed much for a long time, and with the rest of this stuff they're just seeing what sticks. I think it's nice to see some new stuff fairly regularly, personally. I just wish they would do something a bit cooler with their cabs... Eude
 4.
I wonder if the 'Student' tag is going to be reflected in the price?
It's a nice thought! The new MiBass 2.0 seems to replace both current models and comes in at £399, so I have high hopes that this will cost a bit less... Eude
 5. Ashdown have been leaking some of the new gear they're launching at NAMM 2013, some of which looks really cool, a 15W all valve head for studio/home useage, a 2.0 version of the MiBass head rated at 640W with a simplified preamp, but this has really caught my eye... From Mark Gooday's Facebook page >> Wjotek Student amp 240w 1.7 kgs , as loud as f*** 360w music power just fantastic our own version of Class D not the stuff that shots down, not limited just bass This is rack mountable , Ground Lift ,DI, Speakon jacks and tiny A little surprise for NAMM built to Wjoteks spec I'm forever considering moving on my Promethean to replace it with an Ashdown micro head and I like this a lot! What's your thoughts Bass Chat?... Eude
 6. I used to have a Peavey Mark VI head into 2 x 4x10s back in the 90's, it was insanely loud and built like a tank. The Peavey sound can be very aggressive, think Billy Gould from Faith No More, he's used Peavey pretty much his whole career. Maybe have a look for a Peavey ProBass head, a more recent high end Peavey head, little more compact and pumped out 500W at 2 Ohms... Scoop on here has one. Eude
 7.
There are plenty of 800-900 watt amps out there these days which don't get slagged off for being over powered, so I don't see the problem with 1000 watts. They're just doing the "it goes to 11 and that's better" sales thing.
Fair point, my only problem with the 1000w thing is that I can't ever really see when I would need that much power, and there's the thinly veiled hope that a 500W single channel version might be a little smaller and cheaper
I dunno - I kind-of see his point. If this amp does what it does without using clever power management - which some people don't get on with - then it's a fair comment to make.
Yup, I think this might evidence a bit of advancement in the whole Class D thing, although the bigger chassis means it might come with a size penalty... Eude
 8.
Was about to post that! It is a Pro-Series Korean built bass but trust me, these are killer and for that price you are getting an incredible bass.
I agree, these basses seem incredible for the money! I love the finish on that one too
 9.
good point the really odd thing is in the "new warwicks" thread folk seem to be excited about this amp, whereas on this thread in the amps section people are more sceptical
I'm certainly interested in it, I'm always pleased to see more folks getting onboard the Class D thing, as it will only help to improve things. I don't agree with Andy's comments about spongy low end associated with Class D's, but I do agree that some manufacturers have been fudging their figures to make the amps appear louder and more capable than they actually are, I won't name names but we all know who they are... Having said all that, if this truly is 1000W it's a bit of overkill, as is the 2 channels, I think a smaller single channel "true" 500W amp would be a much more attractive proposition. Eude
 10. Get this >> http://basschat.co.uk/topic/196981-fs-warwick-ps-streamer-lx4-white-cream-as-new-price-drop/ Bit of a steal if you ask me... Eude
 11. I think custom is likely your only route dude, although Clover do a standard 6 string Jazz >> http://www.cloverbasses.com/index.php?id=9&bass=17 but you can get custom for similar money I'd imagine. My vote would be an ACG. Alan makes some lovely Jazz Style instruments >> http://www.acguitars.co.uk/Gallery/334/ He hasn't made a 6er in that model yet, but no harm in speaking to him about it?... Eude
 12.
Except you'd need a separate box to link the two channels. It looks like a useful amp for people for switch between two different basses live. Maybe I'm just too used to multi-channel guitars amps that have a single input and switchable channels.
Reckon it'd be useful for folks who double on upright and regular electric bass. I'm not sure you could get a dirty tone from it anyway, is it's all solid state so it might sound nasty as it breaks up. Eude
 13.
I guess. But I think I prefer your suggestion of a single channel amp, especially if it were lighter and cheaper (as it should be).
I agree, a single channel 500W version would be just the ticket. That is basically 2 times what I need/want. You never know, they may be testing the water with this and will see how it goes. Eude
 14.
Price is now on the site: £739 RRP.
That's a lot of amp for the money! Apparently it's a Hellborg designed preamp stage too.
 15.
Expect some 0's, lots of them (there will be a number > 0 as the first digit)
I'd love to see a single channel 500W version, that might be a little cheaper Eude
 16.
No, just about every other new item is on their pricelists, but not that amp.
Boo
 17.
Luke - The new amp is the latest creation by Jonas Hellborg, and some extensive R&D. Its a 2 channel, Class D output at 1000W - 4 band eq, compressor, tuner out, effects loop, DI out, and more. I haven't played one yet, but will at NAMM in 1.5 weeks. Andy Irvine has been doing extensive testing with it, and he says its incredible...with more depth and low-end thump than normally associated with a Class D amp. Full details to come, once I've spent some time with it! Thanks!
Oooh, I like that! Is there a list price for these yet? I guess it might be pretty pricey... Eude
 18.
Well that's fair enough in the case of the Warwick instruments. Can I ask how similar they were? Same woods? Same pickup configuration and electronics? I ask because although I own both bolt-on and neck through basses (as well as two set neck) the individual instruments are so different from each other I wouldn't dare say that my preferences for one over the other was down to the way the neck was attached to the body.
I'd guess similar but not exactly the same, they were both made before Warwick stopped using Wenge necks (I think they're using them again now as of this year by the way). The neck through thumb had a bubinga body with a wenge/bubinga neck and wenge board, 26 frets, 2 MEC J pickups and MEC 3 band EQ. The bolt-on thumb would've been an ovankol (spelling?) body I think, wenge neck and board, 24 frets, 2 MEC J's and a MEC 2 band EQ. So I guess it's probably not nearly exact enough to make scientific comparison, but to my ears they sounded like they were from the same family, but different. The Warwick Thumb tone was there in both, but the neck through was smoother and the bolt-on sounded much better, more aggressive with more bite when I dug in and played slap lines, which was a big part of how I played back then. Of course, this is totally how it sounded to me, I appreciate its totally subjective...
I don't know that you need to go that far. I think what everyone in this discussion is saying that it is a very subjective thing. You're dealing with so many different dimensions, construction techniques and wood, that it will never be objective. Then there's the player...
Don't worry, I'm not actually in the huff, I hoped the smilie would have made that clear Eude
 19.
How can you say this? Have you actually played two basses that were completely identical other than the manner in which the neck was attached to the body? What were they? As I siad in a previous post I have basses with all three types of neck construction but they are also made out of completely different materials and have completely different hardware pickups and electronics fitted. I have no idea what difference the way the neck joins the body makes to the overall sound, and I doubt anyone else can. Until someone can conclusively prove otherwise I'll be happy to go with the construction method that has a minimal impact on my playing technique.
I've not conducted a scientific experiment, but of all the basses I've had the pleasure of playing, and that's a lot, from crumby knock off Fender copies to custom basses costing thousands of pounds, I always seem to prefer the sound of a bolt-on, there seems to be more attack to basses constructed in that manner, where neck through basses, tend to sound more organic and polite. I guess the closest I've got to a the kind of comparison you require would be a bolt-on and neck through Warwick Thumb Bass, I much preferred the sound of the bolt-on, and it was cheaper This is of course my opinion, based on my experience and my ears, I shall keep it to myself from now on Eude
 20.
I'm intrigued to know what would make you remove this choice when ordering a bass.
+1 I actually prefer the sound of bolt-on basses, and in my experience a well made custom bolt-on has just as much sustain as any through or set neck bass I've ever played...
 21.
Mini rig
Ha ha, classic mate! What a beast. Nice looking bass in the background too
 22. Thanks Doddy, that's such a cool mini rig of doom
 23.
I've got a one or two pics on Facebook/Twitter/Instagram,taken a month or so ago, with the rig behind me if you want a look.
Would love to see 'em matey, only ever seen the stock Ashdown product photos... Cheers, Eude
 24. I'd still love to see some pics of this gear too...
