1.
Why are all the new more 'abstract' Fender's all Squier or MIC?
I guess so any booboos don't damage the precious "Made in America" label... Eude
  2. There's something about that bass that I really love. I'm not a huge fan of the standard Fender thing, although they are arguably the classic basis for pretty much everything out there. I really dig the sounds that bass is making though and I personally love the way Fender/Squier are mixing things up a little, even if they're just smashing spare bits together. I'd love to see a 32" Jaguar bass with two of those bass ass humbuckers like the one in that Tele bass, 3 way switch, vol/tone/tone. I would probably even buy one if it was an affordable Squier model... Eude
  3.
Why should his lack of intelligent musicianship cost you money? The first thing I’d get would be ear plugs.
+1
  4. You could just ask the guitard to turn down? Your rig should be loud enough for most situations especially rehearsal! If your amp is maxing out then everything is too loud and you're likely to be damaging your hearing, never mind your speakers! Seriously, I hate it when idiots keep turning up at rehearsal, its absolutely pointless and almost exclusively the guitarist's fault every feckin' time! Failing that, you could get one of the Aggie tube amps, but I think they've been discontinued, they go down to 2 Ohms as far as I'm aware, so you can get yourself another EAD and disembowel everyone with the volume. I gigged my Promethean a fair bit when I first got it and it kept up fine with a live drummer and guitard in a folky/rock context. I've also not had any problems with it, whatsoever since I bought it, bar the gain knob getting a little crackly from lack of use. Obviously my experience is only of my combo, but the Ibanez and all the "tribute versions " are/were based on the same design, made in the same place, same production line, by the same people, so I imagine the build quality and quality control of the head, at least, will be very similar. If anyone is seriously worried about the reliability, just buy one from somewhere where you can return it should it go faulty, these amps are definitely worth a punt! Eude
  6.
Thanks for that mate. I'm reconsidering my options at the moment...kind of thinking I might get myself a Genz-Benz Streamliner as it'll work as a practice tool with the headphone out and aux in, and then get myself a cab later on. We'll see though, but thanks for the heads up on that.
No bother dude, sounds like the Streamliner would be a good bet too. I think that's probably the only thing I would part with my Promethean for to be honest. Best of luck! Eude
  7. This little combo might be a good shot mate?... http://basschat.co.uk/topic/161860-tecamp-puma-110-combo-l500/ Eude
I've just ordered one of the newer style Promethean's from Thomann, couldn't find the old 500watt type anywhere .. Any problems and it will go back always had a good service from Thomann.
Cool, looking forward to hearing what you think of it mate
Not heard much about the RedSub on this thread so far, having just bought one, I haven't used it at a gig yet. Saturday should be its debut. Fingers crossed that it passes muster. I'm not getting rid of my Hartke just yet though. Will keep you all posted.
Matt, Neepheid has one, and is very VERY impressed with it, I think he actually replaced a Hartke head with it as it happens. Like the majority of us Promethean/Red Sub/HB users, he's had no problems at all, people usually only tend to report problems, not awesomeness. As far as I'm aware, I don't think I've heard of any reported problems about the Red Sub ones in particular, the design of the combo for that and the HB ones isn't quite as nice, IMO, but they do all the same tricks and a much cheaper price point.
I've not really followed these new Prometheans much, but just had a nose about and they look rather neat. Mind you, it's the first time I've seen an amp with a 'Phat' control. Now if they could do one with a 'Talent' control, I'd be sorted...
The older ones only have a "Vibe" control, I've never felt the need to be a bit more "vibey", whatever that means... Eude
  10.
It's not so much more lows, as a smaller box for equal lows compared to a 1x12". But because the net internal volume is smaller the port has to be longer to get the same tuning frequency, plus you need space for the second woofer and the isobaric chamber, and then add on the thickness of the plywood, so instead of an isobaric 2x12" having the same performance as a normal 1x12" but being 50% of the size, it ends up being about 75% of the size (and obviously you have the extra weight and cost of the second woofer). Plus if the woofers are running full-range then you'll get comb filtering through the mids and treble as the rear woofer actually fires through the front woofer, so some frequencies are reinforced and some cancelled depending on their phase relationship.

compared to a 2x12 its less of everything, but more lows in comparison. compared to a 1x12, its more lows from a slightly smaller box (because the extra space from the other driver and isobaric chamber and port are all wasted for internal volume purposes).
Thanks guys, I'm glad some of you know what you're talking about, so in summary, Isobaric - not so good, for some I guess. Cheers, Eude
  11.
Half the power is going into moving the front woofer (which makes sound) and half into moving the back woofer (which makes the front woofer think it's in a bigger enclosure but doesn't make any sound). So if you've got 500W going into an isobaric 2x12" the sound coming out is equal to 250W going into a standard 1x12" of twice the net (internal) volume.
So, does that mean the cab technically goes lower, but at the expense of volume then Alex?
  12.
Not much point in drawing all the watts when only one speaker is actually moving air.
There's two speakers in the SP212 cab, although aren't they acting as one, not really sure how isobaric stuff works...
  13.
How about getting one of the Orange SP 2x12 cabs to go with the head. Could always even add a second one in the future.
Very good idea, as you can get the full 4 Ohms into one cab with the TB, right? Eude
  14.
I feel inclined to agree
I should've added, nice bass mate
  15. I personally really like the Katana shape, I think it may have been a little bit too quirky, in an "un-warwick" kinda way, if that makes sense? The weirder Warwick shapes a more elegant you see, but the Katana always seemed like a bass that put function before form, which is never a bad thing, at the end of the day, we have to be comfortable on these big chunks of wood or we will keep looking for something else. Just a quick thing for Warwick Official, has there ever been a 6 string version of the Katana made?...
  16.
The Silver grille cloth option does make the barefaced cabs look killer . . .
+1
The barefaced cabs are built with a pretty balanced approach IMO. They are designed to be light and rugged. They are very very light, and feel well put together (everything fits fine, looks good, and works without issue - at least my version of the compact does). The only niggle I have is the feel of the duratex coating - it looks good, is readily touched up for repairs, and seems to be very tough - but it feels rough and unpleasant. Still feels better than rat fur, and while tolex might feel better . . . I'm not eager to strip and reapply it after it scraped and torn.
Had no idea you could patch and repair the finish, that's pretty cool My impressions of barefaced are based on a fairly old compact from a while back, so things may well have changed wildly since then...
Sorry to hijack this thread but, I'm looking at getting a small combo for home use and wondered if you guys with the Promethean can tell me are the aux/mp3 - in and headphone outputs decent quality soundwise? I'd like something I would be to be able to playalong and practice songs. Also when you plug the headphones in does it disconnect the speaker output? Thanks.
I quite often plug my Mac into the aux and use headphones to practice and as far as my ears can tell the quality is pretty darned good! Eude
  18.
Thanks for the opinions guys. That combo sounds Ibanez combo sounds interesting not sure if it's my bag though.
I appreciate that, I wasn't sure about it, but pulled the trigger anyway, change in lifestyle forced the decision. I've been nothing but amazed since though. WoT is a big fan of these little buggers too. If you are looking for one, I'd suggest you try one out first just to be sure, if you can make it over to South Croydon/Sanderstead way, you're more than welcome to try mine. There are a few other combos out there that might meet similar criteria, Tecamp's Puma Combo 110 might do it if you can get hold of one, but the head ain't removable, and there's the new Ashdown MiBass Combos which have a removable head too, but I think they're kinda pricey for what they are.
Surprised to hear that on the Barefaced though.
I've heard similar, mixed reviews of some of the earlier designs, but the newer 12" based cabs seem to get nothing but good feedback, still not convinced about the build quality but man alive, do I love the look of the more retro styled ones Eude
  19. When I moved down to London, I sold up and bought an Ibanez P5110 Combo, perfect for low level practice, as it's really very small, plus the headphone out and aux in are very useful, it puts out more than enough volume on its own to keep up with a drummer at rehearsals, and small gigs - assuming you're not in a metal band, can be used for very effective on stage monitoring when there's PA support to be had, you can hook it up to an 8 Ohm cab to get the full 500W out of it and if all else fails, you can pop the head out and fire it through 2 big cabs. I finally got my hands on an EAD Foundation 112 cab for when needs must, too good to let it slip by, but for 99% of the time, the combo by itself is perfect. I have a love/hate relationship with 10" speakers, much prefer the natural low end of a 12" speaker, but whenever I get close to parting ways with this little combo, there's nothing that can really compare for my needs right now. By the sounds of it, it would suit you too. Might be worth considering one if you can find one, or perhaps something similar?... Eude

That's a real shame! I was actually considering maybe swapping my older version for the new one, even though its not as powerful, the eq section is a lot more along the lines of what I prefer, not a huge fan of graphic EQs... Might hang fire for a bit me thinks.
  22.
Thanks matey, it's a keeper that's for sure! Not even sure if I need another ACG, maybe a bolt on 5'er with Black Limba body and some pleasing facing wood, 2 humbuckers and the preamp of doom...mmm that sounds like fun! Thanks matey, I was gobsmacked when I tried it in the mix, these are seriously amazing pieces of kit!
I told you! I can't recommend ACG basses enough, I know some folks might want something a little more traditional looking, and now there's a couple of more trad shapes available now, and with the Graft range you can be even more trad if you want. It's a one stop GAS shop! Eude
  23.
Hiya matey, I've had a couple of hours with it now and I can honestly say it's superb, solo it has a poise and clarity I've not known in a bass before and in the mix it has sufficient low and low mid impetus to power through in a classic rock style or mix in a bit of bridge pup and you've got fingerstyle funk but with more guts than any other bass I've had. Bridge pup only gives a superb solid quack. It's heavy but beautifully balanced so that despite playing standing for a while my shoulder is fine and dandy! Its weight also translates into a real feeling of substance, in that, it feels real in your hand, not some pansy necked lightweight balsa nasty, but a glorious marriage of pieces of wood! I'm sold. The preamp is the dogs b€£&€$&s too, and with the pups, provides a vast array of possible tones, I played everything from abba, Jackson 5, wham, Texas, bad company, Steppenwolf, queen, Paul Simon, journey, mika, the fratellis, Whitney Houston and van Halen this evening and with a flick of a knob or two I got each bass sound close enough that it sat right in each track, mid peaks in the right places, everything! Well impressed!!
That's awesome mate! My experience of ACGs is that they have a lot more guts too and the bridge pickup solo'd always sounds surprisingly full and punchy! Nice Eude
  24.
I've never owned a Peavey at any point in my career...
Give it time, give it time...
  25. Hey man, how you getting on with the new bass? It's an absolute peach! (sorry, no new pics from me, was up a ladder painting ceilings all weekend, was dark before I got down, on Saturday and Sunday , maybe next weekend...) Eude
