1. It's the only cover we play, and it's called " What You Want" by the John Butler Trio. It's not been mixed/mastered/anything and was recorded from in the crowd. If you can spot the one slip-up I'd be interested to know Hope you enjoy: Stay for the end for a little jam on the chord progression (the slip up isn't in this ) (that's my bass feeding back cos the gain on my MXR Di + distortion channel was accidentally knocked all the way up.... oops! Clicky Thanks theo.
2.
Please accept my humble apologies. I am truly sorry that I have not "evolved and experimented" in the way that you have. Thank you for sharing.
Don't be silly, it's just that there's something of a 'clogging' of venues where I live (Kent) with the same old regurgitated tripe again and again; it's driving people away. My band played our best gig so far on Wednesday (number 4) and our mates loved it and so did a bunch of old sea-sailor-type folk who started singing sea shanties after we'd packed away and been locked in I'm gonna upload a few live tracks (dodgily recorded) at some point so you can get an idea of what it's like.. if anyone's interested? Then I'll be able to post some tracks up of the gig on Wednesday (when I get the CD), it being the first time I used my Stingray 5 For comparison between what I paid £80 for and my new £700 acquisition.... Bear with me (and purevolume) (There's a live track on our Myspace (from our first ever gig no less!)... you'll have to turn it up twice as much as normal (no mastering or nuffink, just raw, that's my secondhand £80 harley benton 5er; nice growl....) Edited cos I'm a spacka.
3.
PASS
It's alright I don't really ever look at it head-on, it being so small n all... Seemed to have missed it previously!
4. Play something original.
5.
We manage to segway Boston's 'More than a Feeling' into Teen Spirit.
Oh DEAR!
6. Advice please! This: Wireless? On a budget Thanks. T
7.
No!!! Teach them on a 6 string bass
Hehe, I did consider this as a potential retort when I typed the above
8. I don't normally like sunburst Jazzes, but that one coupled with the pickguard and neck/inlays looks flamin'! Shame it's not a rosewood neck...
9.
Anything that has some short of originality. It just can't be reproduced
Um, no....
10. Abalone is a beautiful pickguard choice, but only on the right bass! Mine is the best looking abalone example I've seen so far, but yours ain't bad lookin at all! =]
11. Mustang Sally Teenage Kicks Smells Like Teen Spirit. This list is endless.
12. Anything by Rage Against The Machine, and a few of Audioslave's, but not so much. Bomb Track anyone? Oh, and Jamiroquai's "The Kids" has an awesome bassline!! Shame the song is a bit repetitive though...
13. The problem with jam nights is that they tend to attract muso snobs, at least in my area. They see it as an opportunity to go and show off.
14.
A little harsh IMHO I, like many others learned to play in the "bedroom" and other rooms before I took to performing in public. When I stop playing in public, I will no doubt return to doodling indoors exclusively. Hamster
Sorry, I meant in terms of guitarists who confine themselves to the bedroom, practise for hours and become really good. At playing on their own. Too often at jam nights this breed of guitarist or bassist will come along and fail miserably at playing in a band situation; and still believe they're amazing. In this respect I'm using 'bedroom guitarists' in a less broad sense.
15.
theosd - 'That Guy' - Another tidy and driving bassline! It has kind of a disco groove to it which is pretty tasty. It sounds like the bass mixes in well with the guitar and drum sounds. I found the bass harder to pick out from the other tune because it was, like you say, nice and simple, it fills the space well. I should imagine in a non compressed non - myspace format it really warms things up. Tasty.
Yeah, it's a Harley Benton fretless 5 string acoustic I'm using for 'Around For', which has a tuba-like sound. It's no lie that the myspace player does it no favours as an individual channel, but the richness of the overall sound is good too. I've come a long way since the Under The Thumb stuff, most of that is just funky noodling compared to the more crafted stuff I'm doing now with Aliquot Flow. Nice tone on the torrential song (is that a fretless?). Not sure if it's the myspace player, but at times the track seems to go out of synch with itself? Or is that intentional?
16. I gig regularly in both my covers and originals bands and have been for 3 years since I started at the tender age of 17. I've also hosted jam nights and am about to host a new one to accompany the band night I'm organising. I love it, live experience is the only experience you need. "Bedroom" guitarists are a section of people that no one needs.
17. I'm sure the bass line for 'That Guy' at the beginning and somewhere in the middle is one of my best, just wish I'd have seen it then I woulda made it more of a feature of a different song! The rest of that song is pretty embarassing, though, in terms of the singing. The music's all good though!: http://www.myspace.com/ukunderthethumb The line I'm most happy with in my current band is probably the one for Around For - simplicity always wins through, and people tend to dance to this song more than any other, a true sign of bass success!: http://www.myspace.com/aliquotflow Hope you liiike.
18. UPDATE: Well, I collected it today and it looks EVEN BETTER in the flesh; The guy says there's not another like it, in england at least! Had a rehearsal as well tonight and through my Mark CMD 121H it sounds the f***ing dogs BAWLLZZ!!! Shame there's no room in my tiny bed for it or it'd be right in there!....
19. Giggle-worthy
20.
Yup, I hear that. There was a really nice example of a SUB 5 for sale here a little while ago, that had been refinished to look more retro, Beatifull example, now owned bu one (I suspect) happy bass chatter! I dunno how to post the link, but it was in the for sale section about three or four weeks ago.
I was in the 'anti SR 5 scratchplate camp' til I stumbled across this one on ebay, which I'm collecting tonight. Just WOW. I had to buy it. And I did!!
21.
Some great stuff there - have you tried them out ?
I've had a go (my only try EVER) on the upright in the pic and I've had a couple of tries with the Jazz, but the P is never normally out n about! I ought to go use them more often really the Jazz is an absolute DREAM to play.
22.
I'm not a fan of the SR5's pickguard but like you say - that looks tasty. Has it arrived ?
Nope I'm collecting it tomorrow evening! I seriously can't wait - it makes starting uni again all the more easy! Don't worry, will update you all when I get it!
