Yeah I get what you mean, a fresh set of SS 40's do have quite a 'compressed', modern, sound to them
-
Interesting! That seems kinda counter - intuitive? They do have a huge bottom for light gauge strings though. I love the feel of super lights so much, they just feel so easy to play!
-
Ordered the 45 nickels, looking forward to trying them! 😊👍
-
Cool, thanks! So 45's will basically feel the same, but will they sound a bit fuller or not? If not, I may as well stick with 40's....
-
Thanks for all the input guys, think I'll definitely go for nickels this time! Out of interest, has anyone tried both the 40's and 45's, and is there much difference? I've always used the 40's, and I LOVE how easy they are to play, but just wonder if the 45's would provide a slightly fuller sound, whilst still being fairly easy to play.....

Thanks Whamni, I have done plenty of repairs /setups etc before, but it's still useful information to have out there, could help someone else! 😊👍 Looks like they want to exchange it anyway....
-
The SS ones fell rough to start with too, you should find that goes fairly quickly though.
-
Spoke to them, but they said I need to fill in the contact form. They said they'll just exchange it... But I don't know if I want to because it's good! Plus I'll have to change the strings back... Hmmm.... Would probably rather they just give me a bit of money back or a freebie...
-
I know, I know, completely counter intuitive, but then these strings do feel, respond and sound a bit different to anything else I've used. Thought it might be a thing anyway, but probably not. 😂
-
Hi folks, I've used the stainless ones for quite a while now, but was just wondering if anyone has experience with both and could say how the Nickels compare? I know that usually, nickel will be a bit warmer and smoother than stainless, but I'm sure I read somewhere that people had actually found the SS version of these to have a bigger, warmer tone? Thanks for any opinions! 😊 Oli

Yeah that is the one I've just bought! 😯 I was thinking that I've got no issues with the tuners being loose, so maybe they've fixed the problem, but if this is an early model I guess that's not the case! I need to contact GAK today actually, because I restrung it yesterday, and noticed that there's a gouge in the fretboard near the nut, and also the nut fell out when I took the strings off! Can be easily fixed when I get some superglue, but shouldn't happen on a brand new bass.

Just found an old pic of me playing my BB414! 🤣
-
Just looked at my 435, and it was made in May 17!
-
I couldn't make it in the end today unfortunately, but it looks fantastic! Hope everyone attending has a great time. 😊👍

Sorry Al, I was thinking more about the tuners, even though I didn't specify that! 🤦♂️ Just wondered if they're exactly the same, just a different finish, or if they're a different metal, quality, etc. I do love the bridges on the 700/pro series, tempted to see if I could buy one as a spare part from Yamaha. They'd probably ask for my serial number though.... 😬
-
Does anyone know if the hardware is 'better' quality on the Pro series, or is it just a different finish?
-
Thank you! 😊👍 Let us know how you get on with the P34 tonight. I'd love to try one of the Pro series and see how much they differ from the 400 series.

Yep..... Although the caveat to this is that I've found 'the one' on numerous occasions previously! 🤣 Unfortunately, the requirements for qualifying as 'the one' change periodically..... 🤔

We do have a lot of fun! Here's tonight's set lists. I was sooooo pleased with my sound tonight, and I'm incredibly fussy! My band mates noted the time and date at the end of the first set when I joyfully announced that my sound was perfect! 😂 I've been chasing something for a long time, but didn't know what it was until recently. A bit of trial and error and a few gambles have paid off. I was playing the BB435 all night, through my pedal board and into my fairly newly aquired Rumble 500 combo, which I've had for a month or so, and 1x15 ext cab which I only got last weekend and hadn't gigged yet. This setup tonight was by far the best fit sound I've ever had for my band, seriously awesome! The BB435 itself performed admirably, I was very impressed! My prior research and careful consideration was worth the faff I feel, and I've ended up with the right bass for me. It was hard for me to put my own prejudices and preconceptions aside, and accept the fact that the mid range model was likely going to give me exactly what I wanted, and resist the urge to go for one of the higher range models. The traditional solid alder body, passive electronics, etc gives me just what I need. The neck profile is lovely, I'm not completely sold on the finish right now, but I can imagine it'll be just perfect once it's played in a bit. I was a bit clumsy to start with, due mainly to the unfamiliar string gauge, but actually even that was alright in the end. Very, very playable bass! Once it's set up with my usual strings it'll be even better. The pickups are just incredible, I have absolutely no desire to change them. Gives me enough of the Fender style tone, but actually a lot more too. From my brief affair with the Fender Player Jaguar recently I realised two things: firstly, that a passive PJ setup have me exactly the sound I was after, and secondly that a no frills but well made 'traditional' style bass would give me what I wanted. I need that organic, full, traditional tone to sit in the band mix right. Even though my previous setup was excellent, it perhaps didn't work quite as well in the band context. It's kinda where my comment about my 'perfect imperfection' epiphany comes in. I've never considered myself a gear snob, but equally it's very liberating for me to realise that I don't NEED expensive gear to give me what I need! Anyway, I'm rambling on, I'd better try and calm down and get to bed..... .....can't wait to gig it again next weekend though! 😁👍

Will do, just about to start. Rock covers really, everything from stones and beatles through to foo fighters etc, via a bit of ska and footloose!

First gig for the new bass and extension cab, just soundchecked and out sounds flipping astonishing! Looking forward to this! 😎🤘
