1. Hey folks! Just wondered if anyone knows of a listing of bass teachers anywhere? Can't seem to see one on BC, although I could have missed it.... I'm possibly looking for a teacher in the West Midlands. What I really want to understand is more about how some of the R&B and Gospel players construct their bass lines and go about improvisation and fills/runs. Quite niche, but I just need someone who 'gets' what I'm trying to achieve. I'm obviously missing something..... all of the 'cool' notes seem to evade me! I'm not sure that any of the teachers local to me can help with this. Thanks for your help folks.
2.
My latest acquisition Sandberg Classic Special 4 Mahogany/Bubinga Delano Electronics
Congrats dude, lovely bass! very comfy aren't they?! Hope you enjoy it.
3.
So weird but this is next on my list and I found that video today too! Love the idea of fitting it with some Aguilar DCB pickups, stringing it E-C and getting an ebony ramp fitted! My local store are doing 24 month 0% finance over £500 too, so might bite the bullet before it ends on 8th of February! This is a really great bass for the money. I've played one extensively and need to get one to call my own now :-)
That does sound like a good deal! I've been keeping an eye out for a used one, but they don't seem to appear very often. Maybe because they're good?
4. I know it's an old thread, but really tempted by one again, and I found this video on YouTube I just had to share: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OaK7elkqb1w GREAT playing, GREAT tone, and a GREAT bassface!
5. I know it's subjective, but what's the sound like? Can't find any decent videos of this model on YouTube...... I'd imagine it's pretty bright being all maple? How does the B string sound? Thanks.
6. Hey man, lovely bass! Could you tell me what the weight is please? Ta

Raygun FX

They do look interesting don't they! There's video clips of some of them too. I've been emailing Steve at Raygun with some questions and he's very helpful. Think I might have to go for a Bass Driver.... FYI, he says that the Bass Crank is effectively a clone of the Zvex SHO, but modded to optimise it for bass. The Bass Driver is entirely his own creation.
8. Well..... I think it has definitely made a tangible difference. The Shuttle is a great amp anyway, but I think this has really kicked it up a notch. It seems to sound just more 'quality', I think it's a bit more open, clear, and defined, but somehow with more warmth and character in the mid range. I think it was most noticeable with the gain turned up and preamp volume turned down a bit (about maybe 3:30 and 10 o'clock respectively), it sounded amazing! more like a proper valve amp. I don't know if this is because of the tube itself, or just because I'd cranked the gain more than usual, but my B and E strings have never sounded so well defined, tight, clear, and growly! Seriously. There was improved bottom end imo, the lows seemed to sound much tidier, tighter, and less 'woolly' (not that you could ever call a Shuttle woolly really!). Oh and when I cranked the gain higher still, I was rewarded with a really nice, smooth and creamy overdrive. Of course, it's all subjective and could just be a placebo effect. The point is in the end, I pissed about with my amp, and I'm VERY happy with the results!

Raygun FX

Morning all, just wondered if anyone here had any experience of Raygun FX stompboxes? I stumbled across their website the other day, and I think they seem pretty good for a reasonable price. I'm quite interested in the Bass Driver. http://fuzzboxes.co.uk/product-category/bass-fx
10. The Phat Phuk B certainly seems to get a lot of love! They seem quite difficult to get hold of in the UK though, and a bit more than I wanted to spend.... Has anyone tried any of the pedals from Raygun FX? They look to have some good products, the Bass Crank! or Bass Driver look of interest to me. 11.
You could always run a clean boost before it so you can give it extra gain when you need it.
Yeah that's a good shout, maybe it's worth getting one of the cheaper options to play about with. Do I need to worry about driving my amp too hard? My basses are pretty high output anyway, and then through the comp.
12. Ordered anyway. I'll let you know how I get on with it.
13. Well, Tung-Sol arrived and fitted, I'll report back after band practice tomorrow night on whether it's made any difference or not!
14. Ummm..... I think I might be inventing a problem that doesn't exist.... I could just crank the gain on my Shuttle couldn't I? Is it alright to run it overdriven all the time? Now I feel stoopid!
15. Thanks for the suggestions guys, I had already seen the Boo Boost and wondered if it was any good, haven't heard of abominable before though, they look good! The Wren & Cuff looks great too, maybe a bit more than I wanted to spend, but worth it if it's THAT good. The only thing I'm wondering with these single-knob type of boosts, is whether enough gain to get a little dirt/crunch means a big boost in level? Would I be better with something that has separate gain and level controls? I guess I can just back my amp gain off a bit though. Also, does anyone have any experience of the Mooer pedals, or thoughts on that Dr J? After reading more, I think it's basically a Sansamp BDDI clone. Finally, using a boost/drive in this application (as a kind of 'always on' preamp), is it best to go before or after a compressor? Thanks again for the help, and sorry for the dumb questions!
16. I'm not trying to take over the effects forum, honest.... I would quite like to try a nice little boost type of pedal, but I'm not sure what's the best option. I don't want anything that's too dirty, or darkens the tone too much, but I do want a 'natural' sounding bit of break-up/drive, and a little warmth/mid bump would be okay too. That said, I want it to sound nice and open and clear, without any loss of highs or lows..... This is probably the best way I can describe it, but it's not great! Oh, and I don't want to spend too much either. Has anyone got any suggestions? I was looking earlier at the Dr J Sparrow, because it looks like it might fit the bill. Also the TC Spark Boost. Thanks for your help again!
17. Hi guys, Some of you may have seen my recent thread about the BBE Opto Stomp. After deciding that it probably isn't the right comp for me, I've looked at lots of pedals, and read lots of reviews, and come to the conclusion that the Budda Chakra is the one that will suit me best. It seems to have/do everything I'm looking for, the Ovnilab review is superb, and the price is great (currently about £60 from various places). Before I steam ahead and order one, I just thought if was worth asking on BC if anyone has had any experience with these, be it good or bad. I'd be grateful to hear anyone's opinions. Ta

After doing a lot of looking around at different pedals and reviews, it looks like the best option for me is probably the Budda Chakra; it seems like exactly what I'm looking for, gets a great review on Ovnilab, and hiya can buy a brand new one for a touch under £60 Thanks again guys, on to the next thing now.... I'll start a new thread though!

Thanks for the help guys, not sure what's the best thing to do, maybe I'll just wait to see what comes up on the forum for sale. In the meantime, I might go back to using my GLX Bass Limiter (Boss LMB3) for now and see how that goes. If anyone has any other suggestions though, please let me know!
Thanks for the info man, yeah I've been reading reviews on Ovnilabs again! What exactly is wrong with the current yellow/moustache ones?
Sorry I've just re-read the review where he says about "ticky" noises..... There seems to be a lot of very positive reviews of this version from users though.

BBS Opto Stomp

Hi folks, just wondered if anyone has/had one of these, and could tell me how they got on? I'm kind of looking for a nice, simple, natural comp that will offer a little boost/fatness, without affecting my tone too much. I only need it to even out my sound a little really, as I play fingerstyle, pick and a little slap, I don't need any extreme limiting/squashing. If anyone has any other suggestions for not too much cash, I'd be glad to hear them. Unfortunately it's a bit of a trek to try one out, hence why I'm asking. Currently just using a compressor patch on my zoom B3, but I want to free that patch up (and have a better quality compression if possible). Thanks for your help!
23.
Hardly surprising that Watford Valves would diss Hot Rox, as they are direct competitors. Last time I got a valve from WV it arrived in a jiffy bag; last one from HR came in a stiff cardboard tube padded with bubble wrap.
I didn't tell them that I'd spoken to Hot Rox, I said that a friend had suggested that the TAD valve would probably be the best option. FWIW, the guy at Watford Valves was more helpful than Hot Rox, and is a gigging bass player (with many different amps by the sound of it) and certainly seemed to know what he was talking about in relation to bass amps specifically, whereas Hot Rox gave me the impression that they weren't so sure, despite being very pleasant. The guy at Watford Valves then spent quite some time chatting to me about various bass-related things, which was nice. In the end I ordered from them, because I felt like they had earned my custom.
24. Yeah, I'm not expecting it to mystically transform into an SVT (nor would I want it to!), but I hope it will just give the sound a little something extra and warm up/fill out the mids/low mids a little. I realise the difference will be minimal, but just thought it would be interesting to try.
25. Right, I spoke to Watford Valves this morning, who told me that the TAD valves that Hot Rox recommended are chinese and basically the same as the Ruby's! They recommended that the best option would be to go for a Tung-Sol, or possibly an EHX. Apparently the EHX would be a bit brighter and give a bit more punch, and the Tung-Sol would give a slightly thicker warmer low-mid range, which is more what I'm looking for I guess. So I think I shall order the Tung-Sol shortly, and I'll let you all know how I get on!
