1. If you like the aesthetics but prefer the SR size/feel, there are a few SR1405T models about, which look pretty similar, just an SR: http://www.thomann.de/gb/ibanez_sr1405t_vnf.htm
2.
You're welcome... yes, I'm a Spector man - for the moment - I made the mistake of playing one, and that was it really. Apparently it's quite a common occurrence...
Same as happened with me and Sandbergs really, took a punt on one and it ruined my ol' faithful Jazz for me, which was sold soon after! And I've since bought 5 more Sandbergs (only have two currently)..... Hope you enjoy it mate.
3.
A friend replaced the stock Ruby 12AX7 on his STL-9.0 for a NOS RCA 12AX7 and says that the sound became indeed more warm. I replaced the Ruby in my previous 9.0 for a EHX 12AX7 and felt that the sound gained more definition. I just recieved a 9.2 on the mail today and once i get the chance i'll try the NOS RCA or maybe a NOS Jen Phillips just to see if there's any diference at all.
Thanks very much Ghost_Bass, again very useful info! My knowledge of valves is very small. I spoke to Hot Rox this afternoon for some advice, who were very helpful. They said that the Ruby valves are very cheap chinese affairs, and come as standard in a lot of amps, but aren't great. They said that pretty well anything would be an improvement, but recommended these two for what I'm hoping to achieve: http://www.hotroxuk.com/jj-electronics-tube-ecc83s-gold-pin-1093.html http://www.hotroxuk.com/tad-7025s-12ax7-mullard-style-premium-selected.html They said that the TAD one in particular would be a superb choice, it would add significant 'heft' 'warmth' 'fatness' and other such adjectives, but sounds very open and well defined with a solid bottom end. Sounds good to me! I'm fond of firm bottoms....
4.
This Watford Valves Report may be of use to you. http://www.watfordva...estreport_2.pdf I think the conclusion they come to is that New Old Stock valves sound better. They tend to cost more. YMMV.
Thanks Discreet, very useful info on there! I haven't been on the forum for quite a while until recently, and I'm most surprised (but not unpleasantly) to see you toting a Spector!
5. Hi guys, I read somewhere recently that a guy had changed the factory 12AX7 in his Shuttle for a different brand, which gave him a slightly warmer/fatter/girthier sound... The trouble is I can't find it again! Does anyone have any advice about this, and could maybe give some options of different valves to achieve slightly different tonal qualities? I don't know a huge amount about valves, so any advice would be appreciated. Thanks. P.S. For that matter, does anyone know what the stock 12AX7 is in these?
6. Amazing instruments! I hope someone snaps this up quick, if it was a 5er I'd be all over it! My first Sandberg was a Basic 4, which made me fall in love with Sandbergs and ultimately sell everything else. I've had two Basic 4's, a California VM4, a Basic Ken Taylor 5, and now have a Basic Ken Taylor 5 and Classic Booster 5, both built to my spec. It's the necks that really do it for me, but they are just superb instruments in every respect. GLWTS!
7. Not tried this model yet, but they do look beautiful! Have you tried any BTB's before? If you haven't, they're quite different to the SRs. Obviously still great build quality and sound, but I found that I really felt the 35" scale and the fretboard felt mega wide. Don't get me wrong, I didn't find the couple of BTB 5's I've played uncomfortable, just..... big I guess! As expected though, superb quality instruments. There seem to be a lot of nice new Ibanez models launching this year, including a BTB1605, but personally I don't like the looks as much as the 1405. This is my favourite at the moment: http://www.richtonemusic.co.uk/products/ibanez_sr755-ntf_sr_5_string_walnut_and_maple_natural_flat.asp?gclid=CKyA7d__gsMCFRHHtAodMjQAwA
8. Howdy folks! Just wondered if anyone has any experiences of RMI basses they could share with me? I quite like the look of one, but it's a bit of an unknown quantity as I can't just go and try one out in the local shop. If you have/had one (or more), I'd be interested to know your thoughts. Ta.
9.
Oh that is interesting, I hadn't seen that.
Yeah, I can't stop looking at it...... might be interesting to give one a whirl I reckon.
10. The SR300s are great VFM but I think if you can stretch a little the SR500/600 are worth it. I've been gassing over the SR605 for a couple of years now, I think the ash looks nicer than the mahogany in the SR500s, and it should give a little more snap and definition to my mind. That said, I haven't seen one in the flesh to try out, although i've played many 500s. They're all good basses to be fair.
11. I know the Bass VI (and similar) has been around for a long time but I spotted the new Ibanez SRC6 recently which got me all excited; http://www.ibanez.co.jp/sp/news/workshop/eu/crossover.html I know it's basically the same principle but a slightly more modern take, and maybe a little more 'bass' orientated. There's two guitarists in my band, and I got to thinking that if each of us had one of these, any one of the three of us could play bass, rhythm or lead parts at any time! If you thought out arrangements carefully, there could be some amazing possibilities...... dual part basslines, exchanging licks during lead solos, heavily layered chordal parts, etc etc
12.
Can you describe the sound from the 'dead' notes or post some clips? For example, is the fundamental note missing (or weak) but some of the higher harmonics still present? This is a common symptom of a dead spot where the resonant frequency of the neck at that exact spot happens to coincide with the fretted note - this sucks the life out of the fundamental but leaves some of the higher harmonics intact. Or is the note full bodied but just lacks sustain? The fact that increasing the effective mass of the headstock doesn't improve matters suggests it's something other than a dead spot.
Hi ikay, sorry for the delay. Won't have time to do any clips this weekend probably, but yes, it feels like the fundamental is missing; noticeably weaker. I think I probably need to tweak the setup and see what I can achieve. Just seems weird that I've never noticed it before, only after I tweaked it last week. Either it's a new issue, or I don't normally play above 7th on the B!
13. Thanks for your replies guys. Resting the headstock against something to increase the effective mass does not seem to improve matters really. I restrung it not long ago, and the string seems very fresh still (I use SS rounds and have to change them as soon as there's any hint of dullness!). I adjusted the relief and action a little the other day; straightened the neck out a little as there was a touch too much relief for my liking, and raised the A & D strings at the bridge a touch due to slight fret buzz. There was no significant fret buzz on the B, and I wouldn't really want to put the action up much more tbh, but I guess it's a good idea to have a play around with the setup to see if I can alleviate the problem.
14. It's not a problem I've had before, but I noticed yesterday that I seem to have a dead spot between about 8th and 11th fret on the B string of one of my basses. In fact, nothing above 7th is amazing, but that area in particular is bad. The set up is good, tweaked the truss rod and string height the other day. Just wondered if anyone has any thoughts about what causes this, and how I could remedy it? All the other strings are fine, so I don't think it's a fret issue. Thanks for your help!
15. Hi there, I quite like the look of your LH500, just wondered if there's any way to run it straight into a single 4ohm cab? Thanks.
16. Can anyone with a 32" scale 5er comment on the B string for me? Just wondered if it's flaccid and useless, or whether it can be very good as long as the bass is well designed? I really like the idea of getting a 32" 5er built, it just seems like it would be so much more comfortable and easy!
17.
The problem with a 32" 5 string is finding strings. As far as I know, Warwick make the only off-the-shelf set. You may be able to have a modification made that will enable you to use 34" strings (the B is the problem). See for example an instrument by Alan Cringean: http://www.acguitars...-6-short-scale/ I have a barely-touched (kept in reserve) 5 string 32" Warwick that will be for sale within a few months.
Interesting.... I'm sure I've seen medium scale sets from d'addario and rotosound before, but I may be wrong. Is your Warwick a 5er? If so, please pm me, I'd like to know a bit more about it, and how much you are looking for.
18.
Similar thread from a couple of months ago - http://basschat.co.uk/topic/247993-medium-scale-gas/page__p__2593939__hl__medium%20scale__fromsearch__1#entry2593939
Thanks man, I'll check it out.
19. Hey folks! I quite fancy trying a medium scale bass (32" - 33"),5 string of possible, and just wondered if anyone had any recommendations? I wouldn't want to spend too much at this stage, so maybe sub £500 if that's possible. Hit me with ideas! Thanks
20.
I've not played a 605 but I've got a bbg5s. It's the second one I had and I really love it. Fives aren't for me though so watch this space. I don't think k it was very high up in Yamaha's range but both of mine were put together with the typical yamaha quality you'd expect. Nice even tone across the board and plenty of tonal variation!
Thanks man, let me know if you let that bass go...... I didn't bid on the BBG5S in the end, it finished this morning. I don't really need it, and I think the BB605 is probably slightly better anyway. It does the job I need it to admirably, it's just GAS y'know!
21. Hey folks! I've already got a BB605 as a backup bass, and it's great, but I've seen a BBG5S for sale which is tempting me instead..... I love the BB605, the NE1 preamp is great, but I've always loved the Yamaha humbuckers having owned a couple of TRBs in the past. I just wondered if anyone has any experience of both models and can share their opinions? Thanks for any advice you can offer.
22.
Hi, ill take strings if they are new, unused
Hi there, thanks for looking. Yes they are new, box unopened. I'll send you a pm about payment & postage. Cheers.
23. Hi folks, Bought 2 packs on a whim, and although they're GREAT strings, I really prefer the feel of a .040" set. £15 posted (UK mainland), or I may consider a swap for any Stainless .040" 5 string set. Thanks for looking!
24. Don't know about the 7 string, but I got a Bullet Booster 5 a few months ago and it's incredible! In fact every Sandberg bass I've had has been amazing (6 in total now).
