The SR300s are great VFM but I think if you can stretch a little the SR500/600 are worth it. I've been gassing over the SR605 for a couple of years now, I think the ash looks nicer than the mahogany in the SR500s, and it should give a little more snap and definition to my mind. That said, I haven't seen one in the flesh to try out, although i've played many 500s. They're all good basses to be fair.

Fender/Squier Bass VI instead of a regular bass.?
TRBboy replied to Prime_BASS's topic in Bass Guitars
I know the Bass VI (and similar) has been around for a long time but I spotted the new Ibanez SRC6 recently which got me all excited; http://www.ibanez.co.jp/sp/news/workshop/eu/crossover.html I know it's basically the same principle but a slightly more modern take, and maybe a little more 'bass' orientated. There's two guitarists in my band, and I got to thinking that if each of us had one of these, any one of the three of us could play bass, rhythm or lead parts at any time! If you thought out arrangements carefully, there could be some amazing possibilities...... dual part basslines, exchanging licks during lead solos, heavily layered chordal parts, etc etc -
Can you describe the sound from the 'dead' notes or post some clips? For example, is the fundamental note missing (or weak) but some of the higher harmonics still present? This is a common symptom of a dead spot where the resonant frequency of the neck at that exact spot happens to coincide with the fretted note - this sucks the life out of the fundamental but leaves some of the higher harmonics intact. Or is the note full bodied but just lacks sustain? The fact that increasing the effective mass of the headstock doesn't improve matters suggests it's something other than a dead spot.
Hi ikay, sorry for the delay. Won't have time to do any clips this weekend probably, but yes, it feels like the fundamental is missing; noticeably weaker. I think I probably need to tweak the setup and see what I can achieve. Just seems weird that I've never noticed it before, only after I tweaked it last week. Either it's a new issue, or I don't normally play above 7th on the B!

Thanks for your replies guys. Resting the headstock against something to increase the effective mass does not seem to improve matters really. I restrung it not long ago, and the string seems very fresh still (I use SS rounds and have to change them as soon as there's any hint of dullness!). I adjusted the relief and action a little the other day; straightened the neck out a little as there was a touch too much relief for my liking, and raised the A & D strings at the bridge a touch due to slight fret buzz. There was no significant fret buzz on the B, and I wouldn't really want to put the action up much more tbh, but I guess it's a good idea to have a play around with the setup to see if I can alleviate the problem.

It's not a problem I've had before, but I noticed yesterday that I seem to have a dead spot between about 8th and 11th fret on the B string of one of my basses. In fact, nothing above 7th is amazing, but that area in particular is bad. The set up is good, tweaked the truss rod and string height the other day. Just wondered if anyone has any thoughts about what causes this, and how I could remedy it? All the other strings are fine, so I don't think it's a fret issue. Thanks for your help!

Can anyone with a 32" scale 5er comment on the B string for me? Just wondered if it's flaccid and useless, or whether it can be very good as long as the bass is well designed? I really like the idea of getting a 32" 5er built, it just seems like it would be so much more comfortable and easy!
The problem with a 32" 5 string is finding strings. As far as I know, Warwick make the only off-the-shelf set. You may be able to have a modification made that will enable you to use 34" strings (the B is the problem). See for example an instrument by Alan Cringean: http://www.acguitars...-6-short-scale/ I have a barely-touched (kept in reserve) 5 string 32" Warwick that will be for sale within a few months.
Interesting.... I'm sure I've seen medium scale sets from d'addario and rotosound before, but I may be wrong. Is your Warwick a 5er? If so, please pm me, I'd like to know a bit more about it, and how much you are looking for.
Similar thread from a couple of months ago - http://basschat.co.uk/topic/247993-medium-scale-gas/page__p__2593939__hl__medium%20scale__fromsearch__1#entry2593939
Thanks man, I'll check it out.

Hey folks! I quite fancy trying a medium scale bass (32" - 33"),5 string of possible, and just wondered if anyone had any recommendations? I wouldn't want to spend too much at this stage, so maybe sub £500 if that's possible. Hit me with ideas! Thanks
I've not played a 605 but I've got a bbg5s. It's the second one I had and I really love it. Fives aren't for me though so watch this space. I don't think k it was very high up in Yamaha's range but both of mine were put together with the typical yamaha quality you'd expect. Nice even tone across the board and plenty of tonal variation!
Thanks man, let me know if you let that bass go...... I didn't bid on the BBG5S in the end, it finished this morning. I don't really need it, and I think the BB605 is probably slightly better anyway. It does the job I need it to admirably, it's just GAS y'know!

Hey folks! I've already got a BB605 as a backup bass, and it's great, but I've seen a BBG5S for sale which is tempting me instead..... I love the BB605, the NE1 preamp is great, but I've always loved the Yamaha humbuckers having owned a couple of TRBs in the past. I just wondered if anyone has any experience of both models and can share their opinions? Thanks for any advice you can offer.

Don't know about the 7 string, but I got a Bullet Booster 5 a few months ago and it's incredible! In fact every Sandberg bass I've had has been amazing (6 in total now).
Can't post any pics for some reason but here's a link to my new VM4 3ts/rw/tort Very pleased, great service from bass direct https://www.dropbox.com/sh/85lnozfgr6jmjsc/Ce_nkz5HHK
Very nice dude, congrats! Glad you decided to stay with Sandberg.

These are possibly some of the most underrated basses in the world!!! SERIOUSLY great instruments, and great value for a handbuilt european bass. Superb build quality, and a great range of sounds (the Glockenklang EQ is excellent very natural and intuitive, and has true passive bypass). The best thing about Basics? The neck, without a shadow of a doubt, is one of the fastest and most comfortable necks ever, and is what made me fall in love with Sandberg Basses. I bought a Basic 4 on a whim (which later ended up with Prime_Bass), and it changed everything for me. I've had loads of great basses over the years, and for about 13/14 years my go-to was a USA Jazz (obvs. known for their slim necks) (plus I had Yamaha TRB 4 & 5 strings at that time), but when I got my first Basic, it absolutely ruined the Jazz for me! By comparison, the Jazz felt chunky, clunky and awkward (to me). Anyway, it resulted in me selling all of my other basses because they just weren't getting a look in, and buying more Sandbergs! Now, 6 Sandbergs later, I now just have two custom build Sandbergs, and I'm very happy! It just goes to show, take a punt on something, try something a little different, and you just might find what you've always been looking for but didn't even know it........ £500 for a GREAT German handbuilt bass? What's not to like!? GLWTS Bri! (FYI, I've had a Basic 4 Natural/Rosewood, Basic 4 Greenburst/Rosewood, California PM4 Blackburst/Rosewood, Basic Ken Taylor 5 Highgloss Black/Rosewood, and I now have a Basic Ken Taylor 5 Highgloss Virgin White/Ebony (Black hardware), and a Bullet Booster 5 (same neck as Basics) Cherry Sunburst/Maple (Black hardware)
The Aurora is (currently) due for release early March, (probably around the time of the London Bass Guitar Show I suspect). Marc posted some pics of the internals yesterday of Facebook. It looks very amazing. Price is showing at £1600 through BassDirect. buy one TRBboy! RK
Not a chance at that price pal! New rig AND a new bass recently, I think I'm all spent out for the foreseeable future...... -
I am, until it is Aurora-time! Then the TC rig (2x10 and 1x12) will be relegated to the practice room! RK
Is there any word yet on a release date for the Aurora, or what the price will be?
