Easy, Sandberg Basic Ken Taylor 5. I have two of them, but still the same bass! Feels and sounds incredible, and plenty versatile.

You could get a Prestige SR used for your budget, or look out for something mid range and save a load of cash. Of course, if you could find a used Sandberg Basic Ken Taylor 5, that would be best.......

It sounds to me like if you want to buy a brand new bass, you really need to be looking toward the Ibanez SR's. If you fancy getting a used bass, you might be asked to find a spector euro/rebop for around that price?!

I sincerely hope you report back positively, because I'm seriously gassing after a 5er from them! The exchange rate is much more favourable than I thought It was.... If you don't mind me asking, how much was delivery?

[/quote] Lol, I think this might be the problem! I'm looking for gospel bass playing "out of context" as it were! Some great suggestions so far guys, but I guess I was thinking a little more contemporary really. I think the closest I've come so far is Chaka Khan's "one classic night" live album, which features Andrew Gouche on bass.

Hey folks, This may well be a very stupid question, but I thought it was worth putting out there just in case. Basically, I really love a lot of the bass playing on contemporary Gospel tracks, I love the groove, the feel, the techniques and level of musicality, and generally the sound that most of the Gospel guys go for. The thing is, I'm not really religious and I don't actually like a large proportion of the songs, as songs in their own right. I just really love the bass playing! This is sounding more complicated than it was supposed to now...... It just struck me that there MUST be some non-Gospel music out there that has very similar bass playing on. Maybe some R&B or something? Anyway, if anyone has any suggestions that might fit the brief, please let me know! Thanks for your help! P.S. Really lovely bass in all aspects, and pretty unique I think too. I've been gassing after a purple burst bass for a while.... I hope you enjoy it, it looks incredible!

Well despite some folks opinions above, I've bitten the bullet and ordered some Dunlops tonight. Every other review I've seen has been very positive, and as strings direct have my gauge (40-120) ridiculously cheap at the moment, I thought it was worth a punt.

Very nice! Really wish they did a 5 string version....

I've got the super light Prosteels back on now, much better!

Thanks for the input guys, some very interesting suggestions and opinions. I'll have to see how flush I'm feeling when it's time to get some more, but I do quite fancy trying some DRs. The Dunlops are tempting because of the price, strings direct have my gauge for £15.95 or something at the moment!

Cheap and cheerful, but has anyone got any experience of the dunlop s/s strings? I'm sure I remember reading that one of the "Boutique" type of bass manufacturers was using them on their basses, and also that some fairly notable players from the states were using them (out of choice!).
