Is that my old bass in your sig?! Did you buy it from Primebass? I loved that bass, it was my first Sandberg and changed everything for me. I currently have bad GAS for a fiver exactly the same......
2.
I would say not. On the 2-pickup models, the bridge pickup is closer in to the bridge, and the neck pickup is further towards the neck, though not quite as far as a P-bass pickup; but if you engage both pickups, you get phase cancellation between some of the frequencies, plus each pickup 'loads' the other, so the sound is very different from one HB in the 'MM' position - though not exactly 'hollow' like a Jazz, these are monstrous pickups! Having said that, the bridge pickup on the L2000 etc still sounds quite fat on its own, but not as fat (phat?) as on the L1505. I used to own a Tribute L2000 (now belongs to dr_skitz of this forum) so I am accustomed to its workings, and the USA model that I tried in the shop (as pictured above) was not far different to that in the available sounds.
Ah I see, that's kind of what I guessed. I've got two sandberg basic ken taylor 5s at the moment, and I do love 'em, but I've been gassing for a single 'bucker version again recently just to scratch that itch! Maybe I'll be selling one then..... Thanks for the info, and apologies for 'jacking your thread!
3. Kind of irrelevant now, but in the op I was meaning just get polish, not stoning/dressing/crowning, etc. I did also mean for a quality job, regardless of price. As an aside, when I used to do setups for people, I would always ask the customer what they didn't like about the current setup, and how they wanted the end result to be. If you don't know what you're trying to achieve, how do you know what you're supposed to be doing, right?! I would also say when they came to collect it that if they weren't happy with the results or wanted it tweaking a bit, to let me know and I'd sort it out for them.
4. Looking at your picture in post 4, this is something I've been pondering over recently....... With basses such as these, could you dial in the same (or near enough) sound with the twin pickup one if you got the pickup balance just right, or will it never sound the same as the single pickup version? I guess you'd have to a/b both to know for sure.......
5. If you search YouTube, I believe Ed Friedland did a review a couple of years ago and spoke very highly of it. Certainly a very interesting concept! I just can't imagine it feeling right, but I'd love a go on one. I think mark's got one on at bass direct the moment.
6. Very nice! I haven't seen one of those before. Gives me gas for a single humbucker bass again! Hope you enjoy it.
7.
Learn to do it yourself - apart from needing work on the frets it's not hard.
Oh I always do it myself, it was kind of a hypothetical question following a conversation I had earlier. I've been setting up and repairing guitars since I was about 16 (15 years ago), and I used to do it for customers in the music shops I worked in.
8. Interesting.... So a setup as above for about £25-£30 would be quite cheap then!
9. Hey fellas, i knowa lot of us do it ourselves but just interested to know how much people pay for a pro setup? Suppose it includes a restring (without the cost of the strings), fret polish, fretboard oil, truss rod adjustment, action adjustment, intonation adjustment, etc. So what's the going rate? Cheers.
10.
Sorry, the point I was trying to make was that if I want brightness and growl I go for rounds. If I want plummy thump I go for flats. I don't see much benefit in choosing a string that claims to fort somewhere in between.
That makes more sense!
11.
I used to use them, and my tech once made positive comments about them. I wanted the brightness of steels but without the fret-eating side effect. In the end I switched to either steel flats or nickel rounds, as I don't think the pressure wounds justified the extra cost, nor did I feel that they filled a vacant niche in the string market.
Interesting, did you find steel flats to be comparable to nickel rounds in terms of brightness and snapiness then? I've always assumed that any flats sound quite dull (for want of a better word). Would you be able to play slap convincingly on steel flats!? The mind boggles....
12.
My only memory of them is that they felt exactly like roundwounds!
Ah, thanks. How did they sound compared to rounds? Just noticed D'addario do some too, but all of these half round strings seem to bea lot more expensive than their roundwound counterparts.....
13. Hey guys, just wondering if any of you have experience of these strings (or similar alternatives)? I like the idea of them, but wonder how well they work in practice? Are they anywhere near as bright as roundwounds? What's the tension like? Thanks for your input!
14. Planet Waves Fret Polishing System! I use it every time I re-string; easy, quick, no mess, no masking off, good results. http://www.planetwaves.com/PWVideo.Page?MediaId=7948&MediaName=Fret_Polishing_System_Product_Demo&sid=7524d712-ec0b-4de0-bc21-a0766ffaec1d If your frets are REALLY manky, you might have to use metal polish or whatever the first time, but if you stay on top of it with the Fret Polishing System thereafter, you never need to do it again. I swear by it! I usually get it (and my strings) from Stringbusters because they're cheap and the service is incredible: http://www.stringbusters.com/Ko-Bespoke/productlist.asp?cat=1/BITS%20-%20PIECES/BITS%20-%20PIECES%20GUITAR%20CARE
15. What a great position to be in! I think you're absolutely right to treat yourself. There's loads of incredible basses out there to choose from, I guess my only advice would be to buy something you've had chance to play (or the same model if you're going custom).I don't think I'd spend that sort of cash buying a bass of spec, without being 100% certain exactly how I'll get on with it until it's finished. I guess I'd probably start with a trip to Bass Direct, and then track down any other basses I'd want to try. Personally, I like to think that I'd buy from a UK luthier, but I'd to go around and try some first. Happy shopping!
16. White gets my vote!
17. Just wish they would release some 5ers in the Electra range.......
18. Can't believe the Panther hasn't sold yet! Hope if goes soon so you can get whatever you're lusting after. A cliché I know, but if it was a 5er.....
19. Footloose! and Oliver's army - never realised how great the bassline is until I started learning it!
20.
Here's a recent one of my California VM-5 in Tobacco Burst with vintage tinted neck (Barefaced Super12T and Thunderfunk TFB-550B on the background):
Nice! Very good looking bass.
21. No Idea, but I'd be buying the sunburst one!
22. Go in between and get a Sandberg California TM or TM2!
23. Hmmmmm....... I'm in a right quandary now!
24. I used to only play 35" 5ers, and usually found the B a bit crappy on 34" 5ers. Then I discovered Sandberg and realized that you can have a GREAT B string on a 34" scale bass, you just have to find the right one. Suddenly, my trusty TRB's felt big and clumsy by comparison and disappeared soon after. I really wish there was a decent music shop nearby that stocked them, I think I would have to a/b one with my Sandberg before making a decision. They look and sound good though. .... Just wish there were more good quality YouTube vids!
25. Thanks again guys, very helpful! How do you find the B string? I haven't played a 5 string Soundgear for a couple of years, but I seem to remember finding the B string a little rattly and floppy. Since then however, I have started playing much more lightly and using lighter gauge strings. Basically, I love my two Sandbergs but they are exactly the same, just different colours. I'm just wondering if I would be better to sell one and get something else to give me a bit of variety. It would need to be 34" scale, light, comfortable, and with a slim neck. ....... Which is why I was eyeing the Soundgears up (although I have liked the look of the 605 since it came out).
