Sorry, the point I was trying to make was that if I want brightness and growl I go for rounds. If I want plummy thump I go for flats. I don't see much benefit in choosing a string that claims to fort somewhere in between.
That makes more sense!
I used to use them, and my tech once made positive comments about them. I wanted the brightness of steels but without the fret-eating side effect. In the end I switched to either steel flats or nickel rounds, as I don't think the pressure wounds justified the extra cost, nor did I feel that they filled a vacant niche in the string market.
Interesting, did you find steel flats to be comparable to nickel rounds in terms of brightness and snapiness then? I've always assumed that any flats sound quite dull (for want of a better word). Would you be able to play slap convincingly on steel flats!? The mind boggles....
My only memory of them is that they felt exactly like roundwounds!
Ah, thanks. How did they sound compared to rounds? Just noticed D'addario do some too, but all of these half round strings seem to bea lot more expensive than their roundwound counterparts.....

Hey guys, just wondering if any of you have experience of these strings (or similar alternatives)? I like the idea of them, but wonder how well they work in practice? Are they anywhere near as bright as roundwounds? What's the tension like? Thanks for your input!

Planet Waves Fret Polishing System! I use it every time I re-string; easy, quick, no mess, no masking off, good results. http://www.planetwaves.com/PWVideo.Page?MediaId=7948&MediaName=Fret_Polishing_System_Product_Demo&sid=7524d712-ec0b-4de0-bc21-a0766ffaec1d If your frets are REALLY manky, you might have to use metal polish or whatever the first time, but if you stay on top of it with the Fret Polishing System thereafter, you never need to do it again. I swear by it! I usually get it (and my strings) from Stringbusters because they're cheap and the service is incredible: http://www.stringbusters.com/Ko-Bespoke/productlist.asp?cat=1/BITS%20-%20PIECES/BITS%20-%20PIECES%20GUITAR%20CARE

What a great position to be in! I think you're absolutely right to treat yourself. There's loads of incredible basses out there to choose from, I guess my only advice would be to buy something you've had chance to play (or the same model if you're going custom).I don't think I'd spend that sort of cash buying a bass of spec, without being 100% certain exactly how I'll get on with it until it's finished. I guess I'd probably start with a trip to Bass Direct, and then track down any other basses I'd want to try. Personally, I like to think that I'd buy from a UK luthier, but I'd to go around and try some first. Happy shopping!

White gets my vote!

Just wish they would release some 5ers in the Electra range.......

Footloose! and Oliver's army - never realised how great the bassline is until I started learning it!
Here's a recent one of my California VM-5 in Tobacco Burst with vintage tinted neck (Barefaced Super12T and Thunderfunk TFB-550B on the background):
Nice! Very good looking bass.

No Idea, but I'd be buying the sunburst one!

Go in between and get a Sandberg California TM or TM2!
-
Hmmmmm....... I'm in a right quandary now!
-
I used to only play 35" 5ers, and usually found the B a bit crappy on 34" 5ers. Then I discovered Sandberg and realized that you can have a GREAT B string on a 34" scale bass, you just have to find the right one. Suddenly, my trusty TRB's felt big and clumsy by comparison and disappeared soon after. I really wish there was a decent music shop nearby that stocked them, I think I would have to a/b one with my Sandberg before making a decision. They look and sound good though. .... Just wish there were more good quality YouTube vids!

Thanks again guys, very helpful! How do you find the B string? I haven't played a 5 string Soundgear for a couple of years, but I seem to remember finding the B string a little rattly and floppy. Since then however, I have started playing much more lightly and using lighter gauge strings. Basically, I love my two Sandbergs but they are exactly the same, just different colours. I'm just wondering if I would be better to sell one and get something else to give me a bit of variety. It would need to be 34" scale, light, comfortable, and with a slim neck. ....... Which is why I was eyeing the Soundgears up (although I have liked the look of the 605 since it came out).
-
Many thanks for that cloudburst! I kind of thought they'd bea little lighter than that due to the thin body, but not exactly heavy nonetheless. How does the the 605 compare to your 1205? If you don't mind me asking, how come you moved the 605 on? Cheers.
-
Not a popular model then.......
-
Just wondered if anyone's got any opinions about these, and also if anyone knows what the weight is? Cheers!

Maybe I'm to easily pleased, but I think the bass sound is great and they're all giving an incredible performance! The singer on the right is a little weak on her own, but the one one the left is unbelievably talented.
He should be playing a musicman ! The jazz isn't cutting it for me , also the mix isn't great I can't extract any decent bass sound from my system, I love chic but the drummer is wrecking it for me , he's playing too much , great to see Nile doing his thing though
Sounds pretty good on my tv. I'm not much of a chic officionado so I don't know what the bass should sound like, but I think his sound is really nice. I think it's an Atelier Z.

Wow. Just wow. Friggin amazing! The bass playing is incredible, especially when he gets chance to rip it up a bit! Check it out
I played a five string Overwater recently when I bought my Markbass combo as the guy selling it had one. Very high quality build and an incredibly low (too low for me) buzz free action (it was tuned down a semitone too!). I found the neck to be very slim from front to back but pretty wide across the fingerboard, the exact opposite of my Spector Euro 5 LX. Played a few other Overwaters over the years & they've all been quality instruments.
Thanks Rhys, that's interesting. Your description is pretty much how I like my necks, fairly slim front to back but with fairly generous string spacing. Hmmmmm.......

Btw, Harry: that bass is looking lovely!
