If you need a bass right now, you could do worse than getting a Squier IMO as a stop gap until you have the funds to upgrade to a Fender.
Well.... technically I don't need a bass right now. But for a good few weeks now, I have been lusting after one of the Matt Freeman signature Squiers (the vintage white one). I've been trying to build a look-a-like of that from parts, but no amount of looking nice is ever going to make it play as well as the Squier. Although it certainly isn't a bad bass, it's definitely not the quality of the Squier.
Fair point about looking the part - I guess Gene Simmons' image would suffer if he used a P. Mind you, I'd draw the line at copying his car But a P-bass is a pretty safe choice for all sorts of reasons; it has a proven pedigree and (decently set up of course) is guaranteed to deliver and will 'out-perform' anyone starting out, it won't get laughed off the stage (notwithstanding the above observation) and it'll hold its value. They're pretty much the reasons I bought mine a couple of decades ago. My only disappointment is that it's still out-performing my playing ability . . . but I'm working on it.
Woah, that car... I don't think I would want to drive that about! As well as the tone and the looks, they feel so different to my Warwick. I mean, I adore my 'Wick, but it's like a favourite food... I love chow mein, but I wouldn't wanna eat it every day if you know what I mean?!

Bought my surprisingly good Sue Ryder bass from Tom! No problems, great guy to deal with. Thank man!
My bet is that no one can reliably tell what sort of bass gear is used on a recording because playing technique and gear set-up is the most important factor. After that it's just a fashion show. So people only really need to decide if they're more worried about their image or their playing skills. This sort of debate is reminiscent of the 'Canon or Nikon' debates on photo forums when the reality is that it's completely irrelevant and neither will make or break a photographer. The important thing is to learn the craft of taking good photos. Same with bass playing. What's that old saying about poor workmen always blaming their tools?
Whilst I see your point, I don't do any recording and it's just for gigs. I'm sure you agree that one has to both sound good and look the part on stage, otherwise ya don't get booked again I'm certainly not blaming my tools for my lack of skills as a bass player! That one's all on me...
Get a stingray.
Don't want one
I have a EBMM, a Fender and a Warwick no need to choose my friends

I've had a Warwick and several Fenders and it does depend on the type of music you play. The Warwick I had - Corvette $$ had a huge tonal palette and was good for Heavy Metal right through to Funk. With a Fender (and like Lozz I'm a Precision fan) you know exactly what sound your gonna get and they are utterly reliable. My USA P with flats is great for the bluesy stuff I play so no need for the clever Warwick. I just couldn't get on with the cricket bat neck and lack of fret markers in the end. I also don't really like small bodied basses. It really is down to personal taste. I have a Korean made Squier 50th Anniversary P which is in mint condition Black and Rosewood and it plays like a dream. I might be persuaded to part with it if you are interested? LC
I have the Warwick Corvette $$ and yes, it is a fantastic bass. But I'm pretty sure it would be illegal for me to only have one bass Nah really, I love the look of Precision basses, and they feel so great to play.

Wow really? That's crazy! In what way was it a disaster area? I want to know what I should look out for

Yeah, I love my Warwick as well This all came about because a while ago I saw the Matt Freeman squir and had a bad case of GAS. So I set about building my own look-a-like from parts... But the quality doesn't come close. I'm wondering whether I should have just bought what I originally wanted in the first place...?

I've been eyeing up Fender Precisions lately, but I just can't afford one I'd even settle for the new Matt Freeman Squier, but that is almost as expensive as the Fenders on Gear4Music.... Just moaning.
they tried flogging me some sh*te £15 rotos or something
Horses for courses mate... there's nothing sh*te about Roto's. I have tried DR's, Ernie's, La Bella's, all sorts. Didn't like any of them, been using Roto's since then. -

Then why are you posting one of his solos online? The guy was just brilliant, musically and technically. Sure, his playing was a little on the sloppy side but that just added character!
