So, is it possible to play with a really light touch? I mean barely touching the strings? My hands aren't tiny, quite big for a girl, but definitely not man-size
Where's the pain? One of the most common technique issues is gripping too hard, which causes pain to the flexor pollicis brevis (muscle at the fleshy part of the palm attached to the thumb). If it's that, make sure your bass is at the right height, and practice scales without touching your thumb to the back of the neck. It'll feel weird for a while, but is worth it.
It is in that area, yeah. Maybe it's that then... also seems to be kinda in between my knuckles on the palm side - if that makes sense?

I'm currently playing a Warwick Corvette $$ - 2008 model with the baseball bat neck. When I first bought the bass I thought it was my dream bass and perfect for me in every way but lately I've been wondering if the neck profile is just way too thick for my hand, as after a short amount of time my left hand starts to ache. I'm a girl, so my hands are smaller than the average bassist. I've recently been also playing my Kramer which has a much thinner neck profile, and I can't decide whether it's more comfortable or not... even after spending hours playing them both and switching between the two. I can't see any noticeable issues with my technique, so is it possible that the neck of the Warwick is simply too large for me? It would tear me up to sell this bass but don't want to be causing myself problems further down the line.

Mmmm I love the Fortress One. Been GAS-sing for one for ages but they're out of my price range... -
Kramer Baretta NT - bought from a pawn shop recently for £100. The nut has been re-glued, I've dressed a couple of frets, put on new strings and done a great set up. Plays like a charm, thin neck, low action, nice sound. Has a fair few dings where I don't think the previous owner was too careful - I've patched these up to the best of my ability and under gig-light they're hardly noticeable, but under bright light they're obvious. Got to be honest about these things! Would like to get back what I've paid, or very near offer. Collection from Gloucester, and I'll throw in a decent quality gig bag as well. Showing the back (next to my LTD, also for sale, shameless plug there...)

I would like to sell my ESP LTD B-155DX Purchased from another BC member a couple of weeks ago but I'm just not getting on with the extra string. Really nice bass, and has had a good set up by yours truly and a new set of strings. I've used it for one gig and two practices and it sounds great. A few tiny dings, one on the headstock and a couple on the body but are barely even there. Comes with a Gator case (slightly damaged but fully functional) £220 (which is well below the price I paid for it) and will consider offers. These are around £400 new Collection from Gloucester or will post by courier for £20 Photos (please excuse the goon reflected in the bass!) Amazing colour in the light, can really see the flamed maple top This picture is from my phone so isn't the best quality, but wanted to show the colour under fairly dim light A view of the back and the neck (on the left of course )

I saw a gig last night where the guy used a fender P (very new looking) through both sets. Nice tone, but he totally drowned out everyone else including the singer. His bass was pretty much all I could hear. Not sure whether it was to do with the bass' presence or just a really half assed sound check, but was just overpowering IMHO
-
I'm not really worried about it staying in perfect nick, don't mind a few dings here and there as it add character. More concerned about a broken neck/headstock, something like that. Or it being stolen or having a drink spilled on it

Thanks for the responses, much appreciated. I guess my problem is that I'm pretty skint (always!) and could do with selling off the other two and just keeping this one bass. And I totally agree with the people who say what's the point in having it if I don't use it. That's why I nearly sold it a month or so ago, but just couldn't bring myself to part with it. Insurance, for me anyway, is purely for financial protection... as if anything happened to this bass and I bought an identical one with the payout, it wouldn't be the same... wouldn't have my dings, wear, sweat, soul etc. I'm very attached to this instrument. I guess I'm just paranoid because I only play bar gigs in a fairly rough city

Weird question I know, but this is something that has been causing minor trouble to my brain for a while. I have 3 basses and my favourite by far is my Warwick $$. But I like it too much to gig with it, which is silly as it's the best looking, playing, sounding... Well, you name it. So I bought a kramer for £100 from a pawn shop just to use as a beater for gigs. But it's not the same The Warwick is insured of course, as is all my gear, but I can't stand the thought of it being stolen, broken, molested by some teenager from another band etc. It's the only material possession of mine that I just couldn't be without. Has anyone else every felt too protective of their favourite gear to gig with it, or am I just being paranoid?

Are some people not destined to play 5-strings?
Evil Undead replied to Evil Undead's topic in General Discussion
I think it could be the string spacing that throws me off. I've noticed that the only songs that I really struggle to play on a 5-er are ones with arpeggios, as my fingers kinda trip over each other, where they wouldn't on a 4. Just clumsy perhaps? -
Lock away the 4 string. You are only slowing yourself down. Its all about putting the time in. BTW, if you play the 5 at the same height as the 4 it will be uncomfortable. Play around with strap lengths until you find a balance. I practice at home and play cover gigs with a 6, play a 5er live with the originals band and use a 4 in the studio (mostly). I'm really comfortable switching between them. Maybe you are thinking about the differences too much? I cant really see how there can be a problem aside from a physical one which is what practice is for.
Lock away my $$?! I couldn't Ok... Cool. I'll try and play the 5 whenever I can. I don't need 5 strings but that B is handy. It's weird that its only on some songs that it feels strange. -

Just wondering but does anyone here have trouble switching between 4, 5 and 6 strings? -

Maybe my trouble is that I still play my 4's just as much as the 5...? My favourite bass is my $$ 4, and there's no way I can stop playing that It could be that the quality of the $$ just means that none of the other cheaper basses I own/play come close in terms of feel. -

So, bought me a used 5-string (from the forum) a month or so ago, just to have a go with and see how I got on. It's definitely the nicest one to play of all the 5-er's I've tried over the last year or so. But it still just doesn't feel quite right (for some songs more than others), and I always find my hands wandering straight back to my 4 string. What does it mean? More practice? That maybe I should stick with 4? -
We do 2 x 45 min sets. But that's cos we don't know any more songs to make it longer. No, really.... (We only just started gigging hehe, we're learning more stuff!)
