Have you done the ice bucket challenge?
johnDeereJack replied to jazzyvee's topic in General Discussion
Yeah, I completed it on Fri. Wouldn't say it was pleasant but it wasn't half as bad as I thought it would be! -
I just love that colour combo: a nice dark LPB with a tort guard andmatching headstock. Mmmmm, nothing better! (imho of course!)
Do you have a link for Peterbuilt? I can't find anything on t'interweb.
http://www.peterbuilt-basses.nl/ First one that comes up when you type 'Peterbuilt Basses' into Google although there is nothing on the website except a link to their Facebook page...

Peter Tosh played an M16-style guitar quite a lot. I imagine this bass would have suited Robbie Shakespeare down to the ground! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b-GLMTQSwJs

Any money we get paid goes one of two ways; it either goes into the band pot to cover recording costs if we have any studio time planned or gets split evenly between all four members. I've never been in a band where 'band money' was used to cover stuff like strings, amps, guitars, effects pedals, keyboards or drum gear - that has always been the responsibility of the band member playing that particular instrument to cover the upkeep of their own gear. As you pointed out a jointly owned piece of equipment is likely to cause probs in the long run.

Fretless string recommendations (Wal / Fender)
johnDeereJack replied to Mr Bassman's topic in Bass Guitars
I've always used use Rotosound strings and currently have Rotosound 55's on my fretless and they're still quite bright even after a few years of use. I agree with EMG456 regarding full rounds not damaging your board - I used to have Rotosound 66's on my fretless for years and only needed the fretboard planed after almost 20 years of use and that was just down to me being picky, not through necessity. I like a low action so do get a fair bit of 'mwah' but can easily approximate a more 'upright' sound with the 55's but, as always, ymmv. -

I had a 5-string Curbow in Crazer Orange (I think that's what it was called!) and sold it after the band I was in broke up. Great basses IMHO and I totally regret selling it now.

This is what I have to put up with!

Huntly - I went there once... -
And another +1 for the Roland Bass Micro Cube. I think they're really good actually. Loud enough for any situation where you'd only need a 5 watt amp, has a decent array of simulated amps and useful effects, built-in drum patterns, it's extremely portable and the batteries last for a decent length of time - what's not to like?
See, now that has interested me. From what you say, you thought the GR2 was a good step ahead of the Wonderlove? In what way?
Hey Kev, From what I read the Wonderlove was marketed on the 3Leaf website as an improvement over the GR2; it’s Spencer’s ‘ultimate filter’ and it doesn’t get any better in terms of filters from 3Leaf. As I said earlier I have a deep love of the GR2 so bought a Wonderlove based on the fact is was hailed as an improvement over the GR2 but was thoroughly underwhelmed in terms of what the WL could do and how it could sound when A/B’d with the GR2. It may be that they’re based on different circuits - if I remember correctly the GR1/GR2 are Lovetone Meatball clones whereas the WL and the Proton are based on the MuTron III circuit. When I A/B’d them initially I set everything at mid-day on both pedals and I used a variety of different basses (active, passive, fretted & fretless) all at the same settings through the same amp. What struck me right away was the GR2 instantly bubbled into life whereas the WL had to be cajoled and tweaked before it started acting like I thought it should. Initially I thought I had a defective unit but no, it just needs more attention. I have a specific setting that I always return to with the GR2 so I set the WL up the way I have the GR2 – Sensitivity around 9/10 o’clock, Attack at 11, Decay around 1 or 2, Tone around 3, Range Low, Sweep Up, Mix/Blend around 2, internal switch set to Low Pass and trimpot at unity gain. Playing though the GR2 at these settings gives a wonderfully fat, full, deep, bubbly sound that’s full of vowels and you can’t help but mouth them while bopping your head back and forth, acting like some kind of weird funky chicken! When I set the WL up with exactly the same settings I was shocked. It’s nowhere near as responsive, the envelope barely opens with the sensitivity set at 9 o’clock where as the GR2 was bubbling away; it just didn’t sound as warm or rounded either, nowhere near as full or deep - to me it sounded thin and weak compared with the GR2. I persevered with WL for a month and experimented with the controls using various basses but I was constantly frustrated and underwhelmed so I just always went back to the GR2. It’s just a better filter and, for me at least, there’s no escaping it. The WL has some really nice features with the Low Pass/Band Pass switch and the Boost trimpot being moved outside the enclosure (the GR2’s Low Pass/Band Pass switch and Boost trimpot are internal and accessing them involves removing the cover) and the Expression Pedal input is also a nice touch but apart from that I just don’t see it being anywhere near as good (in my experience anyway) as the GR2.

Have never tried a 3Leaf Proton but I have the both MXR filter and the 3Leaf GR2 - both very usable but both very different. Personally I prefer the GR2 because it has a better range of options compared to the MXR but the MXR is more 'PnP'; you can get a decent tone from the MXR pretty much without doing any tweaking where the GR2 is a little bit more 'hands on', is capable of getting much wetter and funkier (IMHO) than the MXR, can sweep up and down and can be set to Low Pass or Band Pass where MXR doesn't do up/down (not that I use that feature much, if at all!) and is set at Band Pass. I have both the MXR & the GR2 on my board - the MXR set to Band Pass and the GR2 set to Low Pass - and use them for different applications. Both great filters I can only assume the 3Leaf Proton will be a decent filter too but I tried a 3Leaf Wonderlove based on my love of the GR2 and found it to be somewhat lacking, nowhere near as usable as the GR2 (again, IMHO) so it was sent packing.

This is definitely pre-MKIV, personally I'm leaning towards MKIII. These are fantastic heads; the early Trace stuff sounds great and is built to last. I'm still using the same MKV AH150 & 1048 cab I bought new in 1985/86. The only thing I've had done in terms of servicing is replacing the plastic input jacks with metal ones - nothing else has needed to be replaced or fixed. Drop Thornybank a line - he's a bit of a Trace Elliot expert and I'm sure he'll fill in the gaps for you.

The first track that springs to mind is Sir Psycho Sexy by Red Hot Chili Peppers. Listen to what Flea does with the filter he uses - the verse starts off clean then after the first section, 30 secs or so, he kicks the filter on to add a bit of dynamic then plays clean again for the chorus & bridge sections. Try experimenting and see what you come up with.
just to see what everybody is bleating on about having not watched the brits i decided to search it on youtube i made it to 1:40 tis one thing to sing with such style (or affectation if you prefer) but regardless of her unique err style, her delivery comes across as weak and lame possibly overawed by the occasions and the expectation to deliver imho ymmv mcton etc etc as an aside. not being one to personally dabble in the vocal arts these days, does a vocal style like that present issues with autotune?
