1.
My ultimate solution for this was the Alembic F2B preamp - not cheap, and a rack mount box! However - one thing I did learn was this. I always assumed that I'd need to make radical eq changes, as the bass guitar always sounds so "weedy" when used next to upright. But, I had a dual channel/switching DI pedal made for a banjo player with a gain adjustment for each (by John at Orchid electronics). When I tried it out with BG/EUB I found that getting the relative gains properly set up virtually removes the need for major eq'ing of either - it really surprised me.
What EUB were you using ? I'm lucky I guess, I tend to keep my amp EQ flat with my BG and use the onboard preamp. And on the EUB I just keep the treble turned all the way off, and a slight bass boost. I don't seem to have a problem with the gain settings either. But I've only used it at home so far, apart from last Sunday where I only used it on just a couple of songs. So maybe it's worth considering getting something more versatile, with independant gain controls for each channel. Something like this perhaps - http://www.smart-distribution.co.uk/page5/...e38/page38.html
2. There's absolutely nothing wrong with trading your wife for a Tobias, I traded my brother for an Alembic once while we were in the US. He still writes occassionally, and sends Christmas cards etc.
3. Thanks for all of your replies, I'm going to get one of these two http://www.redonionsolutions.co.uk/AB/Selector.htm http://www.loop-master.com/product_info.ph...vuje6pj0r2qubq2 Just need to decide which one.
4. They look great to me, and the price looks excellent I was prepared to pay a lot more than that. http://www.redonionsolutions.co.uk/AB/Selector.htm
5.
Hi Kev Ive just bought one of those radial bigshots, not tried it yet though as ive no amp at the mo!!! its built really well and has a tuner out and mute facility, and a volume control on one channel ( to bring the louder instrument down) and a three position bright switch, its passive, too and quite small, mind you when i had my NS wav4 i used an EBS microbass2 which worked fantastically, a bit more cash though, and maybe more bells and whistles than you need!!! the radial seems great though ill update you soon, they are about £80 i was lucky and got one off old horse murphy , top fella- all the best mate - lee
Thanks Lee, that's now on my short list of possibles, that and the Lehle little. These look rather nice too - http://www.loop-master.com/product_info.ph...ib9uvcesrcg6a74 Kevin
6.
If you feel handy with a soldering iron, you could knock one together yourself, there's a post with some schematics up in the forums somehwere edit, found the link: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...p;hl=schematics
Thanks for that, I have a reputation for being dangerous with a soldering though, not handy. I had my last one confiscated before I'd even unpacked it. But many thanks for your time anyway !. 1
7. Incase are good but the pockets are daft. I use a Protech which is similar to the Incase but has better pockets, and when I was last at the Bassdirect shop they had these in stock which are even better. http://www.bassdirect.co.uk/bass_guitar_sp.../IGIG_Bags.html All three are expensive, but when you consider the price of your bass, and how much it'd cost to repair if it got damaged then it kind of makes sense, to me anyway.
8. For switching between my BG and my EUB. Thanks.
9. Get a 6, makes a lot more sense
10. As the contender for the longest title on Basschat says, I'm after something to enable me to do this, something that won't affect my sound. My amp is a single channel Genz Benz Shuttle 3.0. Thanks.
11. I got this with my really nice new CR4M EUB. I prefer to use the endpin stand that I have, so this is for sale. It's in excellent condition. The price for a new one from Bob Golihur music is $189 plus shipping and taxes, I'm asking £80 including postage.
12.
It is not that they are inately crap - it is that there are 53 million songs out there and everyone playes those 5. Punters like them because they are passive consumers not because these compositions are particularly good. There are literally thousands of tunes that have equal levels of immediacy and are easy to play but, because people can't be arsed to look for them or to transcribe them/prepare charts, they never get an airing.
I should have added earlier that we also play 'Come together' by the Beatles, a couple of Coldplay songs, and a bit of a tribute to Lalo Shiffrin including the theme from 'Bullitt' and 'Dirty Harry'. All transcribed and arranged by our trombone player.
13. I voted jazz 'cos that'd be my choice of the two, but I don't really like either.
14. Martin at Sei basses charged me £130 to fret a fretless bass, that included a perfect setup. It took him two days to cut the fret slots by hand, the neck was bound and he didn't want to damage the binding. He did a fantastic job. My advice is this....if you can't afford to have it done by a professional like Martin, then wait a few weeks until you can. It'll be cheaper in the long run.
15.
It is not that they are inately crap - it is that there are 53 million songs out there and everyone playes those 5.
I totally agree with you, I personally hate playing 'So what', I've played it so many times. My point is this though. When I first started playing jazz about 12 years ago, I found it really hard to find people to play with. Players at the only jam in my area were far more advanced than me. It was a catch 22 situation. I'd never played jazz so people wouldn't let me play with them, which meant that I wasn't getting any playing experience, so I couldn't play with people. I see it this way, if you're playing with people, then that's great. If they're better than you then that's even better, and who cares what tunes they're playing. 'So what' is actually quite a hard tune to play, you have to count the bars as you're playing, 16 bars of Dm7, 8 bars of Ebm7, 8 bars of Dm7. Basically playing with someone is better than sitting at home practising, and a lot of jazz musicians can be very......shall we say 'set in their ways'. "You don't play jazz on an electric bass" is something that I've heard on a couple of occassions.
16. Anyone else ordered anything from them ?. I ordered a strap from them last Wednesday, Friday I get an email telling me its been posted. Nothing has arrived so far so I give them a ring only to be told that it's actually out of stock......what ?. How annoying. They've given me a refund, but why tell me that it'd been posted.
17. I have to agree with lozbass. I had an Alembic Stanley Clarke and it was amazing, but the price !!!!!. Sei basses take a lot of beating though, and are my favourite. I'm onto my 4th one now, the others were all bought used, but the one I have now was made for me. It's coming up to its 1st birthday next week and I really can't see me ever selling it. Its construction is 2nd to none and it plays and sounds great, if I fell out with something about it then I'd just ask Martin to change that something.
18.
AAAAAAAARGH! If you want to know about jazz, stay away from jam sessions that play Canteloupe Island, Watermelon Man, Chameleon, C Jam Blues and So What!
I actually quite like a few of those songs, Chemeleon especially and Herbie Hancock still plays it so it must be good . We play 4 of those in my one band, we don't play C jam blues however. We play them because people like to hear them, they go down well at gigs with people who aren't necessarily 'jazz lovers'. We have two graduates from Birmingham conservatoire jazz course and the trombone player is a current student on the classical music course, the rest of us are pro and semi pro players.
19.
He is boring. Great bandleader, composer and innovator but I think his trumpet playing sucks. And don't bother with Mike Stern. The guy's exactly what's wrong with jazz today IMO. Check out some Louis Armstrong, Django Reinhardt, Duke Ellington, Dizzie Gillespie, Miles Davis (his records are brilliant even if I don't like his trumpet playing), Oscar Peterson, Stan Getz, Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea and Joe Zawinul. Between them they have most things covered!
Sorry but I have to reply to this, 'cos you quite clearly don't know what you're talking about, or have never actually heard him. His phrasing, choice of notes and knowing when not to play were amazing, and without comparison. LISTEN to one of his songs, and I mean LISTEN, not just hear it. He'll play when you don't expect him to, and there will be silence when you expect to hear him, and his phrasing will blow you away if you let it. There's a wonderful version of 'Autum leaves' on the 'Blue note years' album, his playing is quite breathtaking, and so full of emotion.
20. I play in a jazz band with a drummer that you play with, Phil Guest, he calls this the batman bass. This is a really cool looking bass and I can't believe it hasn't sold yet, I was very tempted to buy it myself but ended up with an NS CR4M, anyway have a bump from me.
