Are we all using the wrong tuning?
6stringbassist replied to pete.young's topic in General Discussion
My Sei 6 is a 34" scale, the B is perfect. Steve Lawson played it recently and commented on what a nice B string it had, he actually thought it was a 35"scale bass. -
Long shot......, but would you consider a trade for a TRB6II http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=40818
Possibly, I was looking at your bass last night, let me have a think.

This is in mint condition, I had some Nordstrands fitted to it for a more even and fuller sound. It's currently wired as a passive bass, I took the awful sounding stock preamp out of it, I was going to fit either a John East or a Nordstrand preamp in its place. It comes with a Fender gigbag. I've played 6 string basses for years, I bought two 4 string basses around Christmas time to satisfy the needs of a couple of gigs that I have. Turning up for a 70's style funk gig with a singlecut 6 string bass doesn't quite sit right with the other band members. Anyway, I'm really not getting into the 4 string thing, I miss the low notes way too much, and generally find the whole slim neck really uncomfortable to play, I have quite long fingers, and I'm just too used to playing a 6 string, so I'm going to go for something else instead. I'm asking £500 for this, personal collection is welcome. Trades welcome for a nice 6 string fretted or fretless bass or any 'interesting' fretless bass.
Hmmm. Why all this talk of losing the g string? surely if you tune BEAD then G is the second fret of the top string. You don't lose anything, you just gain an extra two frets lower and lose two frets where you shouldn't be playing anyhow.
I may have misunderstood what you're saying, but the 2nd fret on the top string 'D' would be an 'E'. I play a 6, and really can't get used to playing a 4 string bass, I bought two recently and hate them, I've sold one and I'm about to sell the other one. If you want to stick with 4 strings then tuning BEAD makes sense to me. I love the low notes and play a lot of jazz, a lot of the music I play is in Bb, Eb C minor etc, and on a normally tuned 4 string bass the lowest Eb is only a semitone lower than the lowest E string on a guitar. -

I bought a copy of this a couple of years ago, after hearing Janek Gwizdala recommend it. I find it really useful for sightreading practice.

He's been a huge influence on me and my playing, more so when I was younger I guess. The greatest compliment anyone has ever paid me was "You're a fan of Jaco Pastorius aren't you, I can hear it in your playing, you sound very much like him". That came form one of the best guitarists I've ever played with, he was referring more to my choice of notes and phrasing, rather than anything else. I can't play half the stuff that he could. His groove, timing and stamina are amazing, listen to 'Kuru/Speak like a child', he never loses the feel or the tone once through 64 bars, I read somewhere that it was recorded in one take.

I don't even have this yet, I'm not collecting it until this evening. I was looking forward to using it as a lightweight alternative to my racked Epifani head, but there are a couple of items that I'm desperate to buy, one being a Sei 5 string jazz and I still want another Epifani 3x10, having had my chance to buy Old horse Murphies scupperred by the need to pay for a new gearbox for my car. Anyway, I'm told that it's in excellent condition and comes with an aluminium case. Photos to follow later this evening. I'm open to sensible offers around the £400 mark, plus shipping etc.
firstly can you tell me if the upgraded pup is a humbucker in design...it would have a phantom coil and is the truss rod adjustable at the headstock end finally http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=39305 ??
Hi I'd love your bass !. I don't think it's a humbucker, I think it's this one http://www.seymourduncan.com/products/bass...cpb1_vintage_f/ The truss rod is adjustable at the body end, but you don't need to take off the neck, there's a route cut in the body like on Stingrays etc, you'd have to take off the scratchplate, or I supppose you could cut something similar in the scratchplate easy enough. To be really honest, I've had the bass for about a month now, and I've not had to make any adjustments, I'm ultra picky about string height, I like my action really low.

It's about 4 months old I guess, and is as new. These are the best 1x12 cabs that you can get, forget about all the others, Bergantino and Aguilar etc, these are amazing, loud, deep low bass and very portable. I have two of these and I got a UL310 last Friday, and I want another UL310 to go with it. So I'd like to trade or sell one of my 1x12's. Sale price is £450, they're £550 at the Gallery. Or trade for an Epifani UL310 or Musicman Stingray 4 or 5.
i have been looking at a 51P and decided it was not for me...thanks for the offer though
The 'Sting' bass is a '54 reissue, it has a sculpted body so it's more comfotable to play. I may have a buyer anyway, so I might get back to you in a day or two if this doesn't sell in the meantime. -
Playing music you dislike, case S. Wonder
6stringbassist replied to nobodysprefect's topic in General Discussion
I did a dep gig a few years ago for a band, they were doing a lot of Stevie Wonder stuff. They did 'I wish' in I think it was D or it may have been Db, so it totally screwed up the bass riff, thing is they told me that everything was the original key, they'd given me a tape with all the songs on to learn. The main problem was that the manager/leader of the band and the guy who hired me was the drummer, I suppose key signatures don't mean much to drummers. -

I've not had this too long, I bought it from a fellow basschatter. It's in excellent condition, comes with a gigbag, and the previous owner had the pickup upgraded to a Seymour Duncan, the original Fender pickup is included. I'm primarily a 6 string player, but I bought this to go with my jazz bass for gigs where a 6 string singlecut isn't appropriate. I've found that I really prefer the jazz bass, and I'm missing all of those lovely low notes from the B string, so I'm going to get either a 5 string jazz bass or a 5 string Stingray. It's currently wearing a new set of LaBella medium flats, for that classic Precision bass sound. I'm asking £450 for it plus shipping, or personal collection is welcome. Trades welcome for a Musicman Stingray 5 string bass, Stingray 4 string bass in Sunburst or Epifani 3x10 cab.

Out of the newer luthiers RIM basses stands out, he seems to be trying to push the boundaries a bit, and I like the way he uses relatively unknown preamps and pickups, he's not afraid to experiment.
I'd be interested to know of all the luthiers in the UK that you tried - e.g. the ones that didn't make your list...
One other that I'd forgotten to mention was Bernie Goodfellow, I've played his basses too, they're really, really nice. I'd mention Wal too, but they don't exist anymore really, I've had two Wals and both were amazing. I've played others, quite a few others but I honestly just didn't think much of the ones that I tried, I don't want to mention names 'cos it's just my opinion at the end of the day, and I don't want to go upsetting people.
