1. Mark bought the pickups from my Marcus Miller jazz bass, he's a great guy to deal with, no problems at all.
2. Tell you something else I've noticed with the Epifani stuff, you don't get the humming normally associated with single coils on my P bass or my jazz, maybe it's because they don't have transformers or something ?.

My Sei 6 string flamboyant. It's the 4th Sei that I've owned, but this one was built for me by Martin. I ordered it in September/October 2006, and collected it early last year. It teally is the one bass that I'll never sell, I came close to buying a Fodera last year, but in the end decided that there was just no point, the Sei was tons better, and I just didn't see the point in buying something else. I have other basses too, but they don't come near the Sei, I have them just to please other people.
4.
Definitely the best choice you can make! My fretless is a real dream to play:
Argh, you have the bass I want !. I saw a 6 string Wal years ago in a shop called the Embassy in Mansfield, at the time I was shopping for a 5 string, I believe that they're really rare..
5. I use LaBella medium flats on my Marcus Miller, it sounds excellent. Meshell Ndeogocello uses the same on her jazz, I think that's some sort of 60's jazz, but I may be wrong there, I'm not an expert on Fender basses.
6. 6 is way better than a 4, I do own a few 4 string basses, but they're mainly to satisfy a need for particular gigs. Sixes are actually easier to play, I think anyway, once you get your head around the extra notes. Less position shifts, I can play from a low D (doesn't exist on a standard tuned 4 string) to a high F# (that'd be 11th fret on the G string), without changing position. This makes reading or following complex chord charts so much easier.
7. I don't find they get in the way on my Miller jazz bass, I suppose it depends on how you play, if you're used to pivoting on the pickup or not. I use a floating thumb technique so I don't have a problem.
8. Nice playing there, excellent !. I'm a huge fan of AJ, unfortunately I feel he's quite wrongly got a reputation for being aloof or arrogant, he's neither of these at all, he's just a fantastic musician who knows what he wants to do, and what path he wants to follow. I had the privelige of seeing him play at a clinic a couple of years ago, and spoke to him briefly afterwards, just long enough to say hello.
9. I want one, or two for my 54 P bass, how do they fix on ?.
10. I really like his designs, and that's stunning.
11. You'll find the 2 channels are really useful, I have one set up for my acoustic with just a tiny amount of gain and the tone set to boost the bass and cut the top end, and the other channel set for my electric. It's a pity you can only set the mid cut on the one channel though.
12. Ari's ul502 is a very good price for a fantastic amp. To my mind there's little comparison between EBS and Epifani, they're worlds apart soundwise. EBS is very bright, Epifani is clean and warm and bright in a different way, there's clarity there in abundance, but it's not like the EBS sound at all.
13. Hi Steve It was a really bit awkward to start with I have to say !. I played with my one jazz group on Tuesday, I took my Sei and my acoustic and ended up playing the acoustic all night, it's funny how you can do something when you have to.
14. The new arrivals in a group photo, the jazz usually hangs on the opposite wall it's not always resting against the wall. The Fender Marcus Miller jazz bass, has been fitted with Nordstrand NJ4's for more of a retro sound, and has some LaBella flats on, it was way too zingy with round wounds, I don't slap and I get a great finger style funk sound with the flats and if they're good enough for M'eshell. I only got the Sting precision on Monday, and I have to say that I'm really happy with it, it's really well made, I really can't fault the construction at all. And I can't see why all the fuss is made about the signature inlay, you can barely see it, it's made from a beautiful bit of ash, that is shown off nicely under the sunburst finish. It has a Seymour Duncan Basslines pickup that was put on by the last owner, I may change it to an Antiquity II. It's fitted with a set of DR nickel LoRiders for a nice warm sound. The Wechter was recently fretted by Martin Petersen, it has a bound fingerboard so it took him 3 days to cut the slots for the new frets, he did a fantastic job. It's strung with TI flats more of an uprightish sound, my one jazz group love it, and I play it in a trio with a girl singer and an guitarist in Leicester. I'd like to change the Fishman pickup for something more natural sounding, and have a preamp fitted for a bit of control over the tone. The Sei is still my favourite though, and is the best bass I've ever played by a mile, again that's also fitted with a set of flatwounds, Status this time..

16.
well made points, re the title Lawrence is a great player but again IMO Dave Holland is in another league.
But then again, he'd come into the jazz upright section, so Lawrence might still win it. But has anyone mentioned Janek Gwizdala yet ?, now he really is, to me anyway, awe inspiring.
17. You really can't beat jazz standards for solo bass, with a bit of practise you can play chords, melody and bass line. Ballads work best played freely, songs like 'Autumn leaves', and 'When I fall in love'.
18.
The thread title is actually best british bassist and although he has resided in the States for many years now Dave Holland being originally from (I think) Wolverhampton, completely wipes the floor with Mark King, who I agree is a very capable player, so no disrespect to his achievements. Dave is a truly world class innovative all round complete bass player, musician and composer. Mark King has been very successful, can really play and has written some good songs, but IMO they are in different classes altogether
It's a very poorly titled question really, ideally you should have different genres listed, so Mark King would be under pop, and Dave Holland would be under jazz, but Dave Holland still wouldn't win because Lawrence Cottle is tons better. Unless of course the question was 'Who's the best British bassist, currently living in New York, who's 1st name is Dave ?'.
19. My one band rehearses and records here http://www.quadstudios.co.uk/ Excellent facilities, and the best rehearsal studio I've been to, and I've been to a few !.
20. Well I won this on ebay It's slightly more than I'd like to have paid, but it's 'as new', and he's upgraded the pickup to a Seymour Duncan, and he includes original pickup in the sale. I collect it on Thursday or Friday evening. I'll put some flats on it I think.
21. Mine's 18mm at the bridge, but Martin will build to whatever specs you want, and he will take the time to get from you exactly what you want.
