1. Your Wal is beautiful, unusual that you've got a gloss finish though isn't it. The thing with the 1st bit of wood though, is that the pick-ups, neck and bridge etc will cover up most of the best bit
2. Thanks for your comments. I had a 4 string version a couple of years ago for about 6 months, it belonged to a friend of mine. I really liked it, I'm tall and very skinny, so its small size suited me. I think I prefer the 1st one too.
3. I'm just about to order this. Status don't do 'in progress' photos, so this will be quite a short thread, sort of before and after photos only. It's going to be an Artist model with a through neck, unlined fretless with side markings and no LED's or bendwell and 18mm string spacing. It's also going to have black hardware. It is I believe going to be only the 2nd 6 string Kingbass. I have to decide between these two facings, not an easy decision, so your input would be usefull.
4. Congratulations, it's a great feeling isn't it, ordering your bass. When you say the John East pre, do you mean the ACG/East, I had the East deluxe fitted to my bass but recently changed to the ACG/East, and I have to say it's made a hell of a difference, the bass was amazing before, now it's out of this world. You know I was going to buy the Fodera 6 string that's for sale at the Gallery, but my Sei bass really is so much better that I decided that it was pointless doing so.
5. Yeah, that's my favoured option, the side markings. I've emailed Status to see if it's possible.
6. I see there has been another thread about these instruments recently. I'm about to order a 6 string Kingbass artist model, very exiting. Anyway, I've decided that do to me being so in love with my Sei fretted 6 string, I'm going to order a fretless, which is something I've wanted for a long time. I just can't decide between a lined or unlined fingerboard, the unlined look so much better, but I should imagine are harder to play in tune. Anyone else have any thoughts on my predicament. Do Status do just side markings ?, I'll phone them and see, that'd be the best solution.
7. I'm wondering the same thing, I'm waiting for Rob to email me some photos of facings at the moment. Mine will be a 6 string Kingbass, only the 2nd one ever made. I use an epi rig too, a very versatile set up.
8. Best to try them side by side, but I found the two to sound way different, the 502 is the better one.
9. Steve Lawson is left handed but plays right handed.
10.
P-Basses: They're ugly, always have been and always will be, the tone is just heartless and does nothing for me, they are complete sods to play, uncomfortable in any position and just really really bug me. Stingrays, Sterlings and Bongo's: The same as above, but I'll add that Bongo's really don't justify their own hype. Rickenbackers: Awful instruments, the sound is off-putting, the looks are just nasty, and is the most uncomfortable bass I've ever played. Ibanez's: Souless and boring, they just feel like they're created by robots. Wals: The bass for a Druid. Killer tone though. Peavey's: Just avoid. Warwick Dolphins, Corvettes, Vampyres, Strykers, Buzzards: The worst of the Warwick family. Fernandes: The same as Ibanez but more expensive. Vigiers: Ugly as hell but the tone is a suprise. Corts: Theres just nothing of worth shouting about there. Thunderbirds, Explorers, Flying-V's, SG's etc... and all "Cool" vintage basses: They all sound and play horrible, everytime. Anything else by Fender, besides the jazz of course ^_^ . I know I've missed out a few somewhere.
Excellent, I like it !. Add to that basses with less than 6 strings.
11. Effects pedals, why spend a fortune on a bass and amp, then plug an effects pedal in to the chain to make it sound like a flatulant blue whale.
12. Anything made by Fender especially the US made stuff, it's way over priced, and there arfe loads of people doing it better, I actually really like the Sei basses. Musicman basses, Stingrays just don't work for me.
13.
Are those Status Rounds single or double ball?
Sorry they're sold. A few new things now though.
14.
Right my new Pre-Amp Turned up this morning (Thanks 6stringbassist) and I'm planning on fitting it tomorrow, but there are a couple of things I'm not completely sure of: This is the first question I have is this On the East website under the Installation guidelines it has this note: "IMPORTANT - Make sure all threaded bushes for the pots and toggles are solidly grounded via screening foil or other highly conductive material (although conductive paint is fine for screening it should not be used as a method for ground the pots and switches for the retro" So at the moment my bass has J bass style wiring in it with the ground going to the bridge - I take it I'm going to have to line the cavity with foil, but in that case wher would the ground wire on the circuit go to? (Sorry I'm finding the whole grounding thing slightly confusing) also what foil would be suitable? Any help would be greatly appreciated
Hi Chris The grounding wire went to the bridge on my bass, any problems email me [email protected], I'll try and help the best I can. Kevin
15. I think I have found the perfect bass, my Sei 6'er, I look at other basses and think well they're actually no better. I came very close a few weeks ago to buying the Fodera that is for sale in the Gallery, but after trying it a couple of times I came to the conclusion that I love my Sei, and the Fodera while being a really nice instrument really wasn't any better. I've had it for almost 6 months now too, so the novelty bit has worn off, and I still love it, and I've decided that it can do anything I want it to do, if I play it the right way (if you see what I mean). I do want/need a fretless 6 though, so that's on my shopping list. I am going to order a Kingbass 6 and I'd like a Jaydee, but that's not GAS though, they're just something I want. I also now have the perfect rig, my Epi stuff is really versatile and sounds amazing. I went from Epifani to Accugroove and Begantino, then back to Epifani, simply cos it's better at doing what I want.
16.
I so want that Prototype no. 4..... but it would just sit in it's case like my Black Beauty does now..... why couldn't King have been a 5 stringer....
Or a 6
17.
Cheers for the suggestions. 'kind of blue' is looking like a possibility at the moment. My record player broke a few years ago. Never got around to replacing it. Which sucks cos theres nothing listening to vinyl. I may give 'bitches brew' a try sometime to. I like to f*** my mind up with crazy music. Whenever im in the pub i like to put Weather Report on the juke box, its kinda amusing looking at everyone that doesn't get the beauty of Jazz Fusion.
I wish the pubs by me had Weather report on their jukeboxes.
18.
Why are they useless replies?.....topic is "How often do you change your strings?"
It's actually just typical of his comments.
19. Twice a day. Only joking, once every few weeks, depends on the time of year and the amount of gigs etc. I like a nice clean sound, and I find they lose their flexibilty after a couple of weeks. It all depends on how you play and what sort of sound you like.
20.
It should have some relief. A completely straight neck will rattle badly at the lower frets. A reasonable amount is a business card's thickness half way between the first fret and the point where the neck meets the body when you hold the string down at the 1st and last frets.
Mines flat and doesn't rattle, the action at the 12th fret is about 1.5/2mm. I use 120-30 strings, I do have quite a light playing style, but fast fingerstyle doesn't cause any rattles.
21. Hold the string down at the 1st fret with you forefinger, then put your elbow on the string at the bottom of the neck. You will be able to see then where the relief is. Tightening the truss rod will remove too much relief, it's a quite simple procedure. Try and get it as close to straight as possible, if the strings rattle too much then just raise the action at the bridge, just a slight turn each time until the rattle stops.
22.
Here´s a really sh*tty picture of my sixstring fretless:
If you ever decide to sell that, then please let me know. That's beautiful, and has the perfect amount of strings.
23. PM's replied to, and some new stuff added.
24. Improvisation is improvisation. The Hal Crook book can be used in any genre.
25.
.. how the hell I'm supposed to 'not follow the guitar'? I've been working with riffs sent over from my guitarist and apparently everything is following the guitar.. no matter how different I try to make it???? Surely the whole point of bass is to hold down the root note (with added flair and pizazz ).... it's doing my head in and really frustrating me as it's making me feel like a sh*t bassist!!! Grrrrrr!
Don't worry about what you are or what you aren't supposed to do, there is no right or wrong, that only exists in some peoples narrow minds. Bass is a wonderous and majestic instrument, and if you want your part to follow the guitar then feel free, and if the guitarist wants you to then what more of an excuse do you need ?. I don't have a guitarist or keyboard player in my one band, it's just me, a sax player and a drummer, so I can do whatever I like, which is nice. We play jazz stuff, and I'm free to play chords, bass and solo.
