As people have said, there's a tendency to play harder if you're unamplified, this can cause injury if you're not careful. Also I don't see how playing unamplified you can get the best from your bass.

Hi Thanks for those suggestions...erm is it compulsary to have an odd name if playing upright, only joking. I will check those out, I love the sound of the instrument, I only really listen to jazz, that varies between modern electric, and 50's and 60's stuff, but a lot of the NuJazz guys use upright bass, people like Robert Glasper for instance, and EJ Strickland.

I want to start playing double bass, I aim to get one probably late August early September. I want to be able to play a bit when I start looking though, I think that's important, so I want to have lessons, I'm also worried about hurting myself, obviously learning proper technique will hopefully avoid any unnecessary injuries. Does anyone know of any teachers around the Birmingham area. Also, these basses are big, will one fit into a VW Golf ?. And, one last thing, are things like this worth considering http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/3-4-Double-Bass-Czec...p3286.m14.l1318 http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Double-Bass-German-M...p3286.m14.l1318 Thanks Kevin

Has anyone read "The Music Lessons" by Victor Wooten?
6stringbassist replied to 7string's topic in General Discussion
I thought it really good, I've recommended it to people, and lent it to a few people to read. I agree it could be considered a bit odd in places, but it ties in with his beliefs in a link between nature and music, and spirituality. -
Incase gigbag

These are an excellent alternative to a hardcase, they're really well padded, and just about indestructable. They're also a bit on the heavy side though, about 10 lbs according to the website. My bass is another 12lbs or so, and therefore I'm after something lighter. This is the case in question http://www.goincase.com/products/detail/slim-bag-cl56063 They're not available in the UK, or Europe , I got this from the US. It's in as new condition. £95 plus postage, or you can collect it. PX/trade for a Levy's or Overwater leather one.

Just got this a few days ago, what a great book. Its been used at Berkeley in the improvisation classes for about 20 years. Highly recommended.

Bass Magazines am I missing something ?
6stringbassist replied to Marcus's topic in General Discussion
I do look forward to BGM - but It does sometimes lack in content. Personally I just like the reviews - i'd be happy if it was 80 pages of bass reviews. Interviews I do read, but don't particularly get in a sweat over. I think they do a good job with it though. The American one is just 100 pages of adverts, i don't bother with it.
There are ads sure, that's where a lot of the revenue comes from. But the interviews, reviews and features far out number the ads. The UK magazine just seems a bit too amateurish. I've never heard of most of the people they interview, and 98% of those I have heard of I don't particularly want to read about. -
1. Mark King inspired a whole load of us to become technically better bass players. Surely that's worth something?? 2. Yes, we know that he's a one-trick pony that only does one special thing, (the very fast quadruplet slapping) but he does it admirably well. 3. Anyone who calls any of the virtuoso players "unmusical" is severely missing the point. Is it because you're sick as the proverbial parrot that you can't do it yourself? I hear people say the same about Victor Wooten on here & he is unmistakably the most musical bass player I've ever heard. Without players like Jaco, Stanley Clarke, Marcus Miller, Victor Wooten & Mark King, I'd never have been inspired to become the bass player I am today. I'm sure that goes for many others on here as well.
Well said. It's a bit stupid really, can any those critiscising him say that they've had a positive influence on anyones musical lives, I doubt it. Threads like this really are a bit pointless, there was that one not too long ago about Janek.

One of my biggest influences, and I erm...don't slap. His fingerstyle playing is great. And lets not forget, he sings really well while playing too, I can't even and talk and play at the same time without dribbling.

Yeah, totally agree, Bass player is far better than BGM. -
PM'd Rodby is another of my favourites. I love going back to some of his Metheny stuff and just listenig to his tone and time feel. I have a love/hate relationship with the Metehny Group cd 'We Live Here' because of teh core rhythms but Rodby's bass sound on that cd is awesome. Like Steve Swallow, he gets the job done without the unnecessary fireworks. THey can burn if they need to but recognise that it is rarely the most musical option. I wish I had their discipline! In fact, I wish a lot more people had it!!!
Just been listening to Steve Swallow, with John Scofield on the album 'En route', a live album recorded at the Blue note in New York. What a fantastic sound, hard to believe that he uses a metal pick.

Do Bergantino, Epifani, Schroeder or Mark bass make 8x10's ?.

I 1st heard him on a John Schofield album years ago, a really great player. His book is pretty good, very informative.

Hey, this sounds kind of familiar. But , I know that in my case it's because I play a bass that has more than the 'normal' amount of strings, and is kind of an odd shape. I've auditioned for about 10 bands in the last couple of months, all function bands with loads of gigs booked, all to no avail. I can read music, I learn stuff really fast, I have transport, pro gear etc. One keys player said 'Wow, what is that, I don't even think it's physically possible to play that is it ?'. I just thought.......... knob. He's stood behind a whole stack of keyboards, thinking he's Rick Wakeman or someone, drinking a can of Redstripe, sorry make that middle aged knob. To be honest I wouldn't have played for them anyway. Two others have said that they were 'looking for someone with a more traditional outlook'. I do play in two bands anyway, so I'm not too fussed, but it is kind of annoying. You'll eventually find like minded musicians to play with.

One persons negative effect, is someone elses positive. I actually like Mark Kings sound, it fits the music, I grew up listening to him, so he's a major influence. I also like Jamersons sound, that too suits the style of the music. I love the work being done by extended range bassists, and by bassists who think beyond the normal role of 'bass', Michael Manring for instance, who is in my opinion probably one of the most gifted musicians on the planet. Jaco is/was amazing, both musically and technically, ever tried to play Kuru and make it groove the way he did for how many minutes ?. And Punk jazz, the first time I heard that intro I was blown away.

Victor Wooten at the jazz cafe last night...
Why do they always do that? Does my head in! Do they think everyone is lucky enough to live within walking distance of central London?
It happened to me at the recent Stanley Clarke gig, I only got to see two songs, he walked past me at least an hour before he started to play. -
Kevin, Which Incase do you have? Thanks, Joe.
Now you're asking, I think it's the slimcase. I just checked the website and it's actually 10lbs, my bass is 12lbs.
