1. Thats been for sale for a couple of weeks now, it does look pretty cool.
2. Thanks for your reply, that's sort of what I was getting at. There's obviously a trade off at this sort of price, between features and the quality of the converters etc. It's the Protools LE that comes with it that I like, plus it'll work with other software.
3. I quite like the look of this, and it gets some excellent reviews. http://www.apogeedigital.com/products/duet.php It only has 2 inputs, but I can live with that, it's the sound quality that's more important.
4. Thanks again, very helpful. I've used Logic and I do like it, so I'm probably going to stick with it, it's just the interface that I need to sort out. What's something like this used for ?. http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/Delta44-main.html I've seen this listed on Steve Lawsons albums, as something he's used.
5. Following on from my other thread about M-audio stuff. Does anyone have any experience of this, it gets a reasonably good review in Sound on sound. It seems like pretty good value for money, but does it sound any good ?. Some people here say that the converters sound crap http://www.gearslutz.com/board/ but they seem to be pretty much all professional sound engineers, or come across like they really know what they're talking about, or are they comparing it with really expensive gear. I'm not planning on using it to record anything for release.
6. Thanks for your replies. You're right I'm using a Mac, Logic express is a good price at the moment, and I've used that before, so that is an alternative. Protools seems to be something of an industry standard, that's why I was veering towards it, I've used cubase, and I really didn't get on with it, I find garageband, and logic a lot easier. I'll check out the Presonus and focusrite ones, like I say, the most I'd be recording at one time is probably 4 instruments, most of the time it'd just be me. The Presonus inspire was actually my 1st choice, it appears to do pretty much what I'm after.
7. I'm looking to buy a firewire audio interface, probably one of the above. I'm going to be recording on to garageband at the moment, but I'm thinking of getting protools in the near future, hence the M-audio stuff. It's mainly for recording bass, plus possibly guitar and sax, possibly at the same time. What's the difference between these two, the price is much the same, or am I best to get something else ?.
8. Yeah, mine was a bit hissy as well. I really, personally anyway, couldn't find a use for the BBE process, it just made the sound 'boomy', and somewhat artificial. Flat on them is 10-2-10 from bass to treble, or thereabouts anyway, they're a bit like the Alembic, bass and treble are mostly cut only, and mids are mostly boost only, I found it very hard to get a nice 'scooped' sound. If you check on talkbass, I found a good thread which showed peoples settings.
9. Sounds cool, very nice.
10. I had the solid state version for a while, they're well made but the EQ is very weird, all of the controls interact with one another. I wasn't too keen on the compressor either. I just bought a Demeter which is fantastic.
11.
Was it something about Shukers?
Now that is funny. Stuff about hurting people is stupid though.
12. Old roundwound strings, I have some old DR high beams that I put on when I want a more dubby kind of vibe, they are very bright strings when new, and have a nice scooped mid range, these old ones still have a nice clear top end for definition, but sit better in a mix, they don't stand out like they did when new. I prefer old roundwounds to flats, the flats just sound too wooly, though they''re great for fretless and more ambient stuff.
13. Here's my current set up, I'm very happy with it, for a change.
14. If anyone's interested, Todd is in the UK in March, he's going to be doing a couple of masterclasses which should be well worth attending, he'll be posting details on his website when he has everything confirmed. For 5 and 6 string playing floating thumb is really the only way to play accurately, once you get the hang of it you'll never go back to balancing your thumb on the pickup. It also gives you the opportunity to move around and pluck different areas of the string, without having to have ramps fitted to your bass, which I think look ugly. I also find that it lets me use more dynamics in my playing, just because I have really good control of my playing.
15.
I personally don't find this forum half as friendly as it was back in the bassworld days.
I totally agree, I hardly ever check out this site anymore, today was the first time in ages. If someone dislikes something then that's fair enough, but I don't see the point in stating so like a petulant 14 year old, the opening phrase to the 'I hate jazz' thread for example was so stupid. And being openly being abusive on a forum like this, (see the ERB thread where someone slagged off Steve Lawson). There are far too many narrow minded people who have extremely high opinions of themselves, but who've probably done anything new or creative in their lives, and just seem to take pleasure in being rude, and critical of people who do try to be 'different', or play music that isn't mainstream on an instrument that hasn't got only 4 strings. This is SUPPOSED to be a community, and just like any other community, there are people with different opinions and outlooks, this should be welcomed, and not a point for supposed discussion, the so called discussion usually just ends up in people slagging off others and totally ignoring their expressed opinions.
16. This is an as new multi effects processor. I'm after something else, namely a Lexicon MPX1, so this is for sale. It's in as new condition, with all packaging and instructions. £275 ono, plus postage, or you're welcome to collect it.
17. I'm really only using this as a glorified power amp, I plug my valve preamp into the effects return socket. So I'd like to sell it to someone who will use it to its full potential, and use the cash to buy a power amp. It's about 5 months old, and has always been kept in its rack, so it is in as new condition. I'm asking £700 ono for it which includes the SKB rack case. Personal collection is prefered.
18.
So if I don't agree with you I'm small minded? I think that says it all really...
No, you are not small minded by not agreeing with me, everyone has the right to their opinion, and to listen to what they want, do a search on my posting on this site and you'll not find that I've said anything to the contrary. The things that have been said on here about solo bass are small minded, solo bass exists as an art form, like it or loathe it, it's not going to go away, there are more people doing it every year, maybe not enough to fill Madison square garden, but they probably get more people watching them than you do. If you don't like it then fair enough, but to ridicule it, and pick only on small points is stupid. So Dave Grossman is going to play Bach sonata in G minor, what's wrong with that, you don't want to hear it then fair enough, stay home and listen to Dr feelgood, but don't make fun of the bloke, he wants to play it, and there will be people there to watch him and appreciate what he's doing. Making fun of it just makes you look stupid, LOL indeed, I'm just laughing at you.
19. I don't really know why people bother posting threads like this, it's pointless, you just get the same stupid small minded people saying the same things. Like the thread the other week about ERB's, what was the point in that in the end ?. It's like I've said before, it's the punk rock ethos, they openly bragged about the fact that they couldn't play their instruments. People on this forum when presented with something outside of the realm of 4 strings and 'standard' playing, always start behaving the same way, they have to dismiss it as circus tricks, or something that has to be ridiculed, instead of just accepting it for what it is....ie. other players expressing their desire to make music the way that they choose, be that soloing, tapping, slapping etc, on whatever instrument they desire, with however many strings. It is like bassbloke says "I can't therefore I dismiss'.
20. It's a good job we don't all think like you. Jaco would never have torn the frets from his jazz bass, Larry graham might never have put thumb to string, John Entwistle would have left his treble control set flat etc. Most people probably don't, that's personal taste, but an awful lot of people do, there wouldn't be this sort of thing going on otherwise http://www.unpronounceable.com/solobassnight/ As for embarrasing and uncool, how can being a talented musician be embarrasing and uncool, I'd rather listen to someone talented trying something different, than a mediocre bass player playing something that's been done by thousands of other people thousands of times, now that is boring. Just my opinion of course.
21.
I think, if you want to play solos, play a guitar, or another suitable instrument. These bass guys, the only people that buys their music are bassists, and I don't believe that's cause it's a 'refined' taste, I think it's cause it's sh*t LOL. I mean, there are some great players around who make you go wow, but for me, it's become tiring, and I crave for simplicity.
Personal taste isn't it. But I'd say that most solo things have a niche market, how many non-musicians have heard of Alan Holdsworth for example or Eberhardt Weber. Why should I buy a guitar if I want to solo, and seeing how there are many fine bass players who make a living, and sell albums by playing bass, I don't see how bass can be considered as an unsuitable instrument, especially if it's an extended range instrument .
22. The price is per set..........a veritable bargain.
23. I've been experimenting recently to find 'my favourite' string for my Modulus Quantum 6. The following strings were tried and rejected either because of the sound, or in the case of the flatwounds, because of the string tension. They are all in as new condition, the Rotosounds were only on for about 5 minutes, they are a very high tension string. None were gigged. My Modulus is a 35" scale instrument, so these should still be OK for pretty much any bass. They are all 6 string sets, but can obviously be used on a 5 string, you could experiment with a high C if ou wanted. These are the strings - Rotosound monel flats medium gauge - SOLD. DR Hi beam titefit medium gauge - SOLD TI flats - SOLD Status hotwire flats- SOLD I'm after £7.50 for each one which includes postage.
24. I love seeing all the solo bass stuff, it can be done so why shouldn't it. Who says that bass should only have 4 strings, and play just a supporting role. I know that it's traditional for it to do that, but if we'd always stuck rigidly to what was traditional then where would we have got. The electric bass is only 50 years old, a young instrument, we should be pushing for it to fulfill what ever role it can, and trying to implement many colours and ideas, not one articulation. Just my opinion of course.
