1. A refret suggests to me that the bass has been played enough to warrant a new set of frets...it must be a good one! That wouldn't devalue it in my eyes. A replaced saddle is fine in my eyes too. Things break. A replaced bridge is another thing, though. Other mods too.
2. Looks like a great gig. The instruments are sexy too!
3. Probably! The fretless I have here has had really light use - perhaps not all that more than a couple of hours - and the wear seems disproportionate. And it is a great excuse to get an ebony board for added sex appeal!
4. Would it be possible to have a two tier fee system? A small fee to place an ad or a larger, annual sub fee which would then allow folks to post as many ads as possible? It wouldn't scare off new members. Throw in mandatory fields for location and price and you have the income and improvements that seem to be needed.
5. Four months on and the project has mostly come to a halt. I have the tuners, string retainers and neck bolts but no neck yet. Life keeps getting in the way! Nonetheless, the project has evolved in my head. I am going to opt for an ebony fingerboard; my rosewood fingerboard on my fretless conversion (another project that has stalled) is already showing signs of wear from only light use. Whilst the wood is likely of relatively poor quality, I'll still cover by bases and go for ebony as it is, if talk is true, harder. What will likely happen now is that I'll order a neck which will go on my Jazz. The neck on there now will go on a P body to become my fretted workhorse. Warmoth don't do an old school P body for five strings, so this will need arranging too.
6. That looks like a great exercise! Thanks for the tip. I'll make a note of the book.
7. Wouldn't it be heavier than ?
8.
Huh. It says Moist.
And then C Dripping. Perverted machine, this.
9. The shop sounds like it is stonkingly lame. The bass...white with a maple neck...it's going to look great! Inundate us with pics as soon as possible, please!

Relic J5

I'll be following this build with glee!
11. If I were in the market for an amp, yes, these would be of interest. Just the Ampeg name will get people interested.
12. Don't know if it's just me, but I can't seem to see the classifieds on the mobile version of the site.
13. Are you using an electronic tuner? Not all of them accept B. Try fretting it at the 5th and tuning it to E. If the above comments don't apply, that is.
14. An early 1960s Precision in Olympic White. Period correct paint, light wood etc but 5 strings and a Hipshot bridge.
15. With a guitarist behaving in that way, I think it's time to look for your second band!
16. I'm with Geoff. I haven't checked the details, but I think you'd need to angle the neck and do so much work that it would definitely not be worth the time and energy. Couldn't you make an SG from scratch? It seems like it would be easier and more likely to be good.
17.
Seems there is a trend emerging here.... So all you 5 string converts, any temptation for 6 string,as if one string made you convert surely 2 extra is the way forward?!
I bought a six string and then only used the C string on one song. It was heavy and much less comfortable than my 5. It now sits gathering dust and is mostly a monument to my greed and stupidity. Still, it does see some home use.
18.
I started on a 4 then moved to 6, now on 5s. In my opinion, if you can play a 5 string comfortably, then why bother with a 4? There's nothing you can play on a 4 that you can't play on a 5. If you don't get on with a 5 string neck then of course you should stick to 4s but if you don't mind then playing a 4 is just limiting yourself IMO. Even if you don't use the extra notes on a 5, there's no negatives to having them there just in case.
My exact sentiments. I don't see me ever going back to a four string. Why on earth would I?
19. Ernie Ball Power Slinky 5 roundwounds on all but one. Why? Because I do. I have no problems with them and use them because I have always used them. I tried Rotosounds a while back and hated them with a passion. I use D'Addario Chromes on my Jazz and they are positively lovely. They are the only flatwounds I have ever tried, though.
20.
Thanks again guys, good to hear that nothing untoward has happened. The power of BC eh?
Indeed, unless the building work was unexpected, in which case I hope he is ok. He struck me as being a frightfully good chap in a PM conversation a couple of years ago.
