  1. I wouldn't want my bandmates boozing at rehearsals, but that's me. If I want to hang out with people drinking, I'll go to the pub. People get stupid when drinking and that is what I cannot stand. My bandmates don't drink at rehearsals and no more than one or two for nerves before a gig. I don't touch alcohol any more.

If my bandmates were to implement a "drinking culture" at practice, I would leave. There is usually a shortage of bassists...shouldn't be too hard to find another band!

  2. Always wanted to own a Rickenbacker until I played one. Now, definitely not something I want to own. The body and neck are seemingly designed to be the opposite of what I find comfortable.

Yamaha - sorry, they look horrible. The pickups are the key horror and the headstock - which I would be able to forgive otherwise - completes the nightmare. I've never played one and I never shall.

    Fender Tele basses...look ghastly.

Anything which looks wider than my hand, such as the 11-string monstrosity posted above. No animosity to anyone who would want to play it, though. Creativity strikes us all in different ways and, if he can play it, well done to him.

Headless basses, single cuts, basses with LEDs on the fingerboard - thanks, but no thanks.

Once, I never wanted a Jazz or a Precision. Now I have a (Warmoth) Jazz and it is great. When Warmoth sort themselves out and offer a proper 5-string P, I'll get one. Nice.

Once, I never wanted anything with more than four strings. Now I wouldn't want anything with fewer than five, although I think that 6 is my limit (but suspect 5 is my actual limit).

  3. Thanks for the answer. I asked as I have a 6-string but I don't really use the C and was thinking of making it F#-G. I also don't have an amp that would handle it (at least, that is one of the reasons why I haven't done it yet) and doubt I would use it much. I've been listening to music made with 8 string guitars recently.

No, I keep my 7 string bass tuned BEADGBE to match the guitar instead. All 4ths is tempting though, just for the ease of transposition.

Have you tried any other tunings? Like F#BEADGC or similar? I'm sorry for going off topic a bit.

On topic, I managed to borrow a seven string guitar. Nice. The B is good. I am still working it out, but it seems good so far.

avoid the blues juniors they tend to explode

They do not tend to explode. They sound good, but I think there are better amps out there. I had a Blues Jr for a few years and it was great. I currently have a Marshall JCM800 combo and a power brake to quieten it down a touch.

  6. That looks luscious! I've been interested in seven and eight stringed guitars for a while but can't find any around me to play with and nobody I know has one. There is some great music being made with them. Animals as Leaders is my current favourite and the only new music that has interested me in years.

Well, I was basically wondering how it worked as a "clean" preamp. I don't tend to use distorted sounds very much you see.

I'm beginning to think this isn't the pedal for me after all, if thats as clean as it gets...hmm.

I use it as a clean boost / warming up pedal with my Jazz with flats and GK amp. It can be done!

Although, to be brutally honest, something tells me that a simpler (i.e. cheaper!) method is available for those just wanting what I use it for.

Agile used to have a facility where you could pay a little extra for them to check the instrument over before shipping. Don't know if that's still available though.

    You mean "quality control"?

In slightly more realistic price range - I have an ESP Eclipse. Much lighter than a Gibson, bit of a belly carve that makes a huge difference and best of all a good volute to stop the headstock breaking off.

I have one too. ESP Eclipse I CTM - in arctic white with EMGs and an ebony fretboard. Lovely! Good enough to make me sell my Gibson Les Paul. Light, too. I might lose the EMGs, mind.
