1.
Warmoth tort is one of the best looking ones...nice and dark, but not sure about it fitting a mij 75
Yup. I have one on my Warmoth jazz. It's a lovely shade of dark red/brown.
2.
thats not improvisation thats just noodling around a key centre. Completely un musical to me
I also rather liked it. It made me wonder what kind of theory I need to learn to be able to noodle something like that myself. And the sound is great, I thought.
3.
It's from 2008, but I'm not ageing since 2006, so may as well put that one here: The only thing that changed in me is my bass preference - now I crave older stuff. It's from the photo session made by my friend; I needed a photo with bass, she needed a model. Win-win situation.
Is it hard to play with only one arm?
4. A number of these youngsters are also musicians. I still do not see the rabid interest. It's odd, really. One would think that having collected all the Pokemon cards when they were younger, they would want to get into a music genre and collect everything there is and know everything there is to know. A lot of my mates were really into music and never became musicians. I don't understand that either, to be honest. I heard music, liked it, wanted to play it myself. I liked playing and wanted to make instruments. It seems like a logical progression. I'll probably start growing trees soon. I don't think anyone is bemoaning the accessibility of music nowadays; I think the sadness is due to the lack of passion and the lack of the thrill of the chase, both for older and younger people.
5. I too mourn the loss of the record shop. Beano's in Croydon closed a couple of years ago, even though the owner did everything he could to remain open. I spent hours in there looking at rare and obscure records...glory days! As a teacher, I am witness to the lives of numerous youngsters. They seem to lack the rabid passion I had for music; the dedication to a specific genre which helped me to identify with myself is absent in them. They seem to like all kinds of music but don't really listen to music; rather, they hear it in the background while they simultaneously watch tv, play computer games or flick through a magazine. However, I myself am not as passionate about music as I once was. Perhaps it is because I feel that good music is not made any more (likely because I am no longer the target audience). In the past decade, I have only felt excited about a couple of bands (Black Label Society and Animals As Leaders). Otherwise, I only seen to listen to stuff that came out pre 90s and by bands now defunct.
6. I've never played a Fodera. I have only seen two or three of them. I have never played a Fender which was fantastic, though. That's why I took the Warmoth route when I felt I needed a vintage style jazz five string. Given the choice and with the criteria in the initial post, I'd go with a Fodera five string but end up longing for a Fender.
7. Good that we have been invited to "stay tuned for more dates" because a load of gigs in America, one in Paris, one in London, two in Canada and then another one in America does NOT constitute a world tour!
8. We all buy things made in China. There is no avoiding unethical products nowadays, so I tend to let things like cobalt mining ethics slip by me. I am not proud of this.
9. Mine - a Stagg 6 guitar stand - is 12.5cm wide when folded. I have two of them which I use in my music room. They are a bit flimsy, but I wouldn't be without mine!
10. Thanks for that. I'll give them a look when I'm next in the market for one.
11. Looks excellent! Well done! And that case looks the business too. What is it?
12. Excellent! I'm also a fan of Warmoth and agree...pricey but great stuff.
13. It really depends on how much you like your other toys. But my knee-jerk reaction is no, you should not. Get rid of the Squier P and Tele and get the Fender P, yes, but surely you don't need to flog those two AND your Blackstar AND the Ibanez? It seems a little harsh. Still, the Blackstar is hardly irreplaceable. Give it a week. If you still feel the same, then go for it.
14. Bump for a great rig. If you were to add an SBX-II 2x10" cab, you would have my exact rig (which I am in no hurry to change).
15.
Am I missing something here? Both these systems look like glorified sanding sticks. Flame away.....
My thoughts exactly. My understanding of the Plek system is that it sets up your neck the way you want it, dresses your frets etc. This looks, to me, like a sanding stick which, at best, is stage one of a manual Plek service.
16.
Samson?
That's it. Obvious, really!!!
17. Aha, that would be a good reason for choosing 4 string, then! I ask as I am [struggling to find the time even to consider] planning on dusting off my Ibanez de-fretting project so I can have a fretless too and, I suppose, need the inspiration. Also, without going there, I didn't really understand going for 4 when you have 5-string basses. The Warmoth is a joy to behold and is played every Wednesday at band practice. If I were a little heavier of pocket, I would do another one but with a fretless ebony fingerboard and be happier than one could reasonably expect!
18. Marigolds...ha! I was staining a body blue once and had one glove on. I drop something in the stain and instinctively pick it up with my other hand. Voilà - smurf hand for a few days.
19. Nice. Your last one turned out very well indeed. Why did you choose 4 string, though?
20. Nothing constructive to add other than one should avoid the Behringer at all costs. I have one and it is truly pants - it had a really hard time tracking the E. I can't dismiss mine as being poorly made either, as it seems that a lot of people have had the same experience. I have a rack power distribution thingie with a light, much like the Furman jobbie but made a company whose name escapes me right now. It begins with S. I want to say Samsung but that definitely isn't it. That has a great light and then you can run a power cable off that to power a 9V thing to power the tuner. I can now tune silently without turning away from the audience. Score!
21. I have an Ibanez SR405 which I am in the process of de-fretting. You can find them for rather little money, the quality is good and you can have a blast de-fretting it yourself. Or the Yamaha TRB idea mentioned by Mog. I wouldn't buy a cheap and cheerful bass from the US. You end up paying mid-price money for budget gear and still have to modify it to make it mid-price quality.
22. And I am back! It was an IP problem which was expertly solved by Hamster. Thanks for everyone's help!
