1. The pickups seem to have been customised...set in some plastic of some sort so they would fit in Bartolini spaces. The SJ and LJ EMG are, as far as I know, standard Jazz shaped pickups. The switch seems to be an on/off switch for the battery (taking the earth wire from the battery out of the circuit). EMG actives are active only and do no work without power. Any more info about these pickups? Where did you get them from?
2. Photo? What do the pickups say on the bottom? It should say EMG40 and then a letter. Are the pickups hardwired, or do they have the quick-connect? Are they the older type of quick-connect, or the modern solderless version? What are these pots? EMGs are active pickups only, so the switch cannot be an active/passive switch.
3. Excellent question, and one I have asked myself recently. I have been checking out Weather Report with Jaco Pastorius (to see what all the fuss was about) and Back Door. I find Weather Report a little too "muzak" but Back Door are tremendous. That was all I can come up with. I look forward to more knowledgeable types chiming in with some solid and perhaps less clichéd suggestions.
4.
how about i give you a few quid and buy these off you?!
That is more than acceptable - I don't think anyone will be trading with me! How about £25,000? No? £3?
5. I have two basses with EMGs - EMG40P and 40DC in one and EMG40CS and 40DC in the other - and both have EMG BQC preamps. I would most definitely say that it is worth it. I play in both a metal band and a rock/pop covers with the basses. I find that the onboard preamp is brilliant and I often gently touch the controls whilst playing. It might be worth noting that I am swapping the 40CS for a 40P, so both will have P (neck) and DC (bridge). I think the 40P's growl and tone is better than the 40CS's smoother tone. The quick-connect cable is (unless they have recently changed it) only for the actual pickup - the other end (which goes in your preamp) is still normal wire. If you buy used stuff, which I also recommend, you will definitely not have any trouble routing your EMGs through a preamp. If you do get a 40TW, please drop me a line. I have two which I think are dead which I would like to have tested. Details here.
6.
my sr 1205 is a thru neck, pity the new ones aren't.
And in the unlikely event that you would want to sell this at some point, please feel free to drop me a line!
7. Interesting...I'll stick to my original SR1205, though, thanks!
8. 1. Cliff Burton Then 2. Hetfield & Hammett 3. Chuck Schuldiner 4. Stevie Ray Vaughan 5. John Lee Hooker who made me want to be good enough on bass to support them. Still a long way to go!
9. A change in plans means that this bridge is up for sale. The Badass is in good condition, I'd give it 8/10. The bridge has been used (although not by me) and has a slight mark on the G corner and a minor chip in the paint under the B string. The saddles have not been notched, but strings have scraped something of a path there. This is mostly on the paint rather than the metal, though. Screws included. The bridge is for both through-body and bridge stringing. Pics: I understand that these things are in short supply and their value has shot up recently, with some Badasses having gone on Ebay for over £100. I am a much nicer person than that. As such, I am asking for: PRICE DROPPED TO £65 including postage from Sweden to anywhere in Europe*. Paypal fine. Cash will go to help fund my Jazz V build. PRICE DROP TO £60!!! See post further below!!! *Deduct £5 for Sweden, add £2 for outside of Europe.
10. Unless I'm fiddling with my stable-as-a-horse-house Ibanez SR1205/6, I leave the string mostly tuned too, but not when I am having serious difficulty shifting the saddle!
11. I play in a rock/pop covers band and a thrash covers band...I think I could pull off both bands with Cliff Burton's tone on Master of Puppets.
12. ...with the string thoroughly loosened or taken off first. I seem to recall having had one of these bridges on a long-gone SRX500. No locking devices - a decent whack was needed to liberate the saddle from the grime of the previous owner.
13.
I've noticed in the technical data that it says that they recommend two nine volt batteries, are they battery hungry, do they last? Or is one battery ok, two overkill? I've got them in mind for another twin neck and it could be a costly beast to keep on the road!
The recommendation is to run them at 18v, which would require two batteries. This is supposed to [insert marketing mumbo jumbo]. I run both my EMG basses at 18v. They both have two EMG pickups and an EMG preamp in them. My main bass had fresh batteries in summer 2009 and is going strong now. I would not say that EMGs eat batteries!
14. On Ebay. I'll give BC members free postage and a pack of Ernie Ball strings 10s, or that and another £20 off if bought through here.
15. I have tried that one in the link and liked it. I have EMGs in my two main basses and personally love the sound they provide.
16. Thanks for the response, dood. I have tried everything with these pickups - isolating one half and then the other, both coils, direct to output jack, 18v, 9v, in a bass, outside and on the bench...you name it. I would rather not say what the symptoms are in case anyone does volunteer to test these for me; I would like to keep the experiment as clinical as possible! Thanks for the bump. I shall use this opportunity - anyone out there use EMG 40TW pickups who can test my pickups for me?
17. The same as on my Ibanez SR1205 - maple and wenge through-neck, mahogany body wings with maple caps. Rosewood fingerboard, although I would choose ebony if it were to be a fretless 5. Nice.
18. I would also be going for a 5 string. I figure that an EMG 40P in the neck and a single coil EMG Jazz in the bridge would be the best. That way, I can always get a new scratchplate and put in a standard single coil in the neck if I want to change back. Great bass - I look forward to seeing the finished product!
19. Thanks, Rumple. I shall most likely be dropping the good Doctor a line in the New Year, after I have worked out whether I want EMGs or something more vintage. I'm completely torn between the EMG 40P (with that excellent P growl) and old-school Jazz. What made you go for the Nordstrands?
20. Spotify. No need for downloading. Clear conscience. Can't answer the second bit, though.
