Excellent question, and one I have asked myself recently. I have been checking out Weather Report with Jaco Pastorius (to see what all the fuss was about) and Back Door. I find Weather Report a little too "muzak" but Back Door are tremendous. That was all I can come up with. I look forward to more knowledgeable types chiming in with some solid and perhaps less clichéd suggestions.

I have two basses with EMGs - EMG40P and 40DC in one and EMG40CS and 40DC in the other - and both have EMG BQC preamps. I would most definitely say that it is worth it. I play in both a metal band and a rock/pop covers with the basses. I find that the onboard preamp is brilliant and I often gently touch the controls whilst playing. It might be worth noting that I am swapping the 40CS for a 40P, so both will have P (neck) and DC (bridge). I think the 40P's growl and tone is better than the 40CS's smoother tone. The quick-connect cable is (unless they have recently changed it) only for the actual pickup - the other end (which goes in your preamp) is still normal wire. If you buy used stuff, which I also recommend, you will definitely not have any trouble routing your EMGs through a preamp. If you do get a 40TW, please drop me a line. Unless I'm fiddling with my stable-as-a-horse-house Ibanez SR1205/6, I leave the string mostly tuned too, but not when I am having serious difficulty shifting the saddle!

I play in a rock/pop covers band [b]and [/b]a thrash covers band...I think I could pull off both bands with Cliff Burton's tone on [i]Master of Puppets[/i].

...with the string thoroughly loosened or taken off first. I seem to recall having had one of these bridges on a long-gone SRX500. No locking devices - a decent whack was needed to liberate the saddle from the grime of the previous owner.

This is supposed to [insert marketing mumbo jumbo]. I run both my EMG basses at 18v. They both have two EMG pickups and an EMG preamp in them. My main bass had fresh batteries in summer 2009 and is going strong now. I would not say that EMGs eat batteries!

I have tried that one in the link and liked it. I have EMGs in my two main basses and personally love the sound they provide.

I have tried everything with these pickups - isolating one half and then the other, both coils, direct to output jack, 18v, 9v, in a bass, outside and on the bench...you name it. I would rather not say what the symptoms are in case anyone does volunteer to test these for me; I would like to keep the experiment as clinical as possible! Thanks for the bump. The same as on my Ibanez SR1205 - maple and wenge through-neck, mahogany body wings with maple caps. Rosewood fingerboard, although I would choose ebony if it were to be a fretless 5. Nice.

I would also be going for a 5 string. I figure that an EMG 40P in the neck and a single coil EMG Jazz in the bridge would be the best. That way, I can always get a new scratchplate and put in a standard single coil in the neck if I want to change back. Great bass - I look forward to seeing the finished product!

Thanks, Rumple. I shall most likely be dropping the good Doctor a line in the New Year, after I have worked out whether I want EMGs or something more vintage. I'm completely torn between the EMG 40P (with that excellent P growl) and old-school Jazz. What made you go for the Nordstrands?
