1. I have a few Ibanez basses too. I echo the sentiments of many posters above - almost faultless. If I were going to go custom, I would ask for a replica of my SR1205. Wonderful instrument...preciousssss...

  2.
Following a conversation I had with someone today, if you genuinely thought someone was never going to learn to play their instrument through lack of talent or commitment, would you tell them straight? And if so, how would put it to them?
If you genuinely think that someone will never learn, you have no business being a teacher.

  3. The Peaveys look like what I would normally go for, but they don't look like a Fender.

Largo - any pictures of these thru-neck Jazz basses? They sound interesting and are what I have in mind - look like a Fender, but have the appointments I like. If money were no object, I'd have a neck-through Precision with 24 frets, ebony 'board, in white with a red tortoise scratchplate. Lush.

  4. I am playing with this idea, not 100% serious yet.

There is talk of starting a kind of blues bar-band (not the totally unoriginal kind, but pretty much, yes) and am toying with the idea of a totally different sound for me. I am even considering a non-Ibanez bass!

I have a fretless conversion in the pipeline and I am really enjoying the sound and feel, so I may wish to go fretless.

Now, as looks are important in some circles, and the sound certainly is, I am looking for a P or J type 5 string passive bass, but it has to be neck-through. I prefer the feel of a neck through to a bolt-on in a big way.

Are there any about, or would I need to make one or have one made for me? Like I said, I'm not all-too-serious, so any price is fine.

    Thanks!

  5. Ernie Ball Power Bass strings for me (I think that's what they are called - they are the roundwounds in the purple packet). I've pretty much used them the whole time I have been playing. I flirted with Rotosounds but hated how they felt. I had a bass with Warwick Black Label strings. They sounded great, but I found that they felt odd and my fingers tingled afterwards, suggesting that my skin didn't like them at all.

I'll be trying a set of LaBella flats on a fretless conversion I'm working on, mostly to see if they live up to the hype.

  6.
Ever tried using a hammer?
Yes, a Yamahammer.

Regarding Ibanez necks, I suppose if you don't like the SR4 or SR5 neck, you're going to dislike their SR range of basses. I mostly play Ibanez 5 string SRs; however, I should add that I have their top-of-the-line (at the time) models and I have always avoided the lower part of the range. This is not because it is rubbish, but because I don't like the generic P based design and I try to avoid Chinese products as much as possible.

  7. Ibanez SR405 from 2000. I got it to defret it. Right now it is on my workbench with 2 frets removed.

EMG 40J pickup - still in the box, awaiting the right bass to come along.

But going back to the last thing I bought which is in active service, it will be a Korg Pitchblack tuner. Wonderful piece of kit!

  8. Right...first off, I apologise for my lack of communication to those who have contacted me about these strap locks. I honestly didn't think I would be able to trade them, let alone have such a response...which makes me think I may have misled some people. This is what I have on offer:

That's it! Just the buttons, not the actual bits that go on the strap. If these aren't Dunlops, please let me know!!!

What I'm after is the same, but the Schaller version. Just the buttons - not the bits that go on the strap. I already have a couple of them spare!

If everyone is still interested, they will go to the first person who contacted me. Thanks!

  9. I have a pair of Dunlop strap buttons from their locking strap system. They are more a smoky, metallic black rather than matte black...I believe "Cosmo black" is the term for it. I can provide pics if necessary.

Anyway...they came on a bass, but I have Schaller strap locks on my other instruments and on my trusty strap too.

Do you have a pair of black Schaller straplock buttons you are not using? Fancy a pair of Dunlops? Finally, can you be bothered to post them to me while I post you the Dunlops? If the answers to those questions are all yes, drop me a line!

EDIT TO ADD: I am on the hunt for some chrome Schallers too, so black or chrome would be grand. Ta!

Edit again to add that these have now gone. Thanks for looking!

  10. For me, poor taste but acceptable is the kind of picture my grandmother would tut at (but show me - she's like that). Unacceptable is the kind of picture that belongs in a bongo mag and would make my lovely grandmother unhappy to see.

Ideally, a forum would take care of itself. I agree that some pictures are in poor taste, but I also agree that the forum should not change avatar policy so some folks can browse at work.

  11. I have now had the SKB case for a week or so.

The very first thing I noticed was that carrying a bass on your back is a whole lot easier than carrying it in a case in your hand. My bass plus case was 10kg and it put a tremendous strain on my hands and arms, especially as the case was not the most ergonomic ever designed. The ability to carry such a weight on my back has made the SKB worth it already.

As for the bag itself, it seems solid. I have had my Ibanez SR1205 in there (it also fits the SR1206, but these are not as large as standard six strings, so you might want to check first) and the case has protected it perfectly - the bass still arrives in tune, suggesting that there have been no knocks to the headstock.

Having a case on your back is a little strange, though. Walking is fine, but the bottom of the case is too low to allow running of any kind, so make sure you get to the bus or train with good time, as a quick dash is out of the question. You could, of course, take the case off your back and hold the padded handle, but as it is in the centre of the bag, the weight is not distributed all that well. Really, this case is only good for carrying your bass on your back.

The big test came yesterday, when I had to endure a six minute walk to the station in heavy rain. The case is not advertised as waterproof, but my precious was dry when I reached my destination after a further 8 minutes in lighter rain.

    Totally recommended.

  12. Wow...thanks for posting this. I was just about to order a set of Labella 5 string flatwounds, which would have been my first foray into flatwounds. Nice to hear this before I ordered and ended up disillusioned with the entire idea.

You say they sound and look different - do they feel different too? Have you tried a load of sets, or just a couple? I'm just trying to see whether this is an isolated case or standard for Labellas.

  13. I just picked up a Peavey PV8 - it isn't battery powered, but it ticks all the boxes and is nice and cheap. More importantly, it works a treat! You can even get one with USB connectivity, so you can send the mixed signal to your PC.

  14.
i think im gona get either ash or maple with a quilted maple top.
im looking at emg for pickups, do they sell wiring kits and pots aswell?
EMG do everything - preamps, pots, pickups etc.

If you go the Warmoth route, make sure you get exactly what you want. Resale value is low.
