1.
Every time I see this, it just gives me a massive smile - any chance you could get one of those panoramic camera thingies and reveal the full extent of your endowment?
Wrong website, folks!

  2. I would use my Ibanez SR1205 as a template and then make a few alterations. So, I would take the:

    5 piece maple/wenge through-neck with SR5 neck shape
Mahogany with maple top body, SR shape
    34" scale

    and then go for

EMG 40TW in neck and bridge
EMG BQS preamp, with two toggle switches to the side for the pickup splits
    Chunkier bridge (Badass V, perhaps?)
    Ebony 'board
And, as I'd like the body's maple to be flamed, I'd like a translucent green finish please.

That is it. If I were to go custom, that would be it. In fact, that's been "it" for quite a while. Luckily for me I already have the SR1205, or GAS would be killing me right now.

  3.
It looks very much like the SR700 in the 2001 catalogue, only that is listed as a walnut finish with black hardware.
That's what I thought too when I saw it. I have the SR705 from that time and the 4-string which sparked off this discussion looks very similar. The bridge, albeit gold, looks a lot like the black one I have on mine, which also has no model number and was made in Japan.

  4. This is the bass of the moment for me right now:

I acquired it in early August. I already had an Ibanez 5er, and I assumed that this would be better as it is a higher model. I was right. I have changed strings, polished the frets, changed pickups to EMGs, put in an EMG preamp and now everything is about as good as can be.

If I had magical powers, I'd change the routes so the EMGs fit perfectly and make the 3 band EQ on 3 knobs. Ah, happy days!

  5.
The one I wouldn't recommend is the Behringer rack tuner. Slow and doesn't track well
Yup. I leant mine to a friend and am not that bothered about getting it back. Rubbish. It had troubles with Eb, so I'm sure it wouldn't handle B either.

  6. I have been rather harsh of BGM in this thread, and rightly so (as it was quite awful).

I must say that the recent couple of issues have been much, much better. There seems to have been a total rethink of the magazine's ethos and staff moral - it is a far better read now than before. There is still a way to come, naturally, but it will never be perfect.

I would like to see a redesign of the final few pages, as it fizzles out (adverts) rather than leaving a can't-wait-for-the-next-issue feeling (final interview, tech article or something). Anyway, I shall be renewing my subscription when it is due if BGM keeps it up.

  7. I have this exact model - it's a great bass. It was my first bass in 1992 and one I shall always treasure for its solid feel and great sound. It's well worth an electronics upgrade (I had to change the switch and pots on mine).

If I had money to spare (I don't) and I played 4 strings (I don't), I'd get this in a heartbeat. Lovely piece of craftsmanship.

  8. I knew that there were "supply problems", but not this. Oh dear. Tough times we live in...

If anyone finds a Badass V in black and nice and cheap, let me know! Best I can find is $100 incl postage, but with import costs etc, that's a bit much for me right now.

  9.
[...] Will I be able to flog my CV for ten grand when I'm 87, then? :)

    [...]
That depends on how old you are now! But probably, yes. I can see today's cheapies going for £10k in 60 years. Of course, at that point, a loaf of bread will be £1k, a pint of milk £850...

  10. Nice - congrats on the new bass. I hear great things about the Bongos, plus a lot of criticism of their appearance.

Mind you, I'm positively drooling over the Ibanez in that last pic you have. Mmmmmmm.
