1. Hello

Title says it all, really. Does anyone have an audio 50k push-pull pot? They are often called A50k, but annoyingly the codes are not universal, and cannot really be trusted. There are some on eBay right now, but they are linear.

This is (or could be - if I find one) going to be used as a master volume for an EMG BQC kit. The standard kit has a 50k master volume pot, and I plan to use an EMG 40DC and a 40TW (coil split) with it. Drilling a hole for a toggle switch is not an option.

Any help would be most appreciated!

Damn, that's not really what I want to hear as I have a hot bass and a Sansamp on its way here. Would the MXR M-80 act in a similar way?

  3. I can't try them because of my location. It's hard enough to find a decent instrument at a decent price in Sweden, let alone one nearby, and I don't get back to the UK as often as I would like. Buying unseen is always risky, so I make sure I know exactly what I am buying and do some serious research on the brand and model.

I'll go on over to Talkbass and have a peep there. Thanks for the tip, Mikey!

  4. Cheers, Pete. I was a bit unclear in my original post - my pondering on whether wood matters was really a thought about whether certain body woods can lead to an inability to get a good rock sound, or indeed a good growl, and whether the current understanding of the relationship between wood types and tone types still holds. We all think that wood x leads to sound y, but we all agree that wood is a non-uniform thing and so one can never be certain.

  5. Hello

I have a mahogany bodied bass here which I adore. It has a nice throaty growl to it with good definition, perhaps partly to the maple neck - perfect for the kind of music I play, which is hard rock/metal. This is also what I perceive is the standard mahogany & maple sound.

I would like a back-up, but this time I would like to go neck-through. If I went for a maple/bubinga neck with a solid maple body, would this be too bright for my kind of music? The maple/wenge neck and mahogany & maple cap body version of this bass is very hard to find, but seems to be what I would be after...but it may sound too much like the bass I already have. I am unable to play either of the basses before buying.

Thoughts? Other than that GAS is a terrible thing!

  6. What ape said - with a proper set-up, I can't see how there would be any structural problems.

As for a 6-string...first of all, no, I do not play one. A while ago I was in a shop and there was a 5er there which someone - I assume it was the previous owner - had tuned it DEADG, using two E strings for the D and E. If you got a 6-string, you could tune it similarly (DEADGC), and then get the C string but keeping the all important low D, whilst not using a thick B string. I don't quite see the point, though. Still, there are options!

  7. Here we have the Rane DC24 rackmount compressor. It is the best available according to this chap who has tested a million different compressors. In the quick summary he gives it top marks, and in the full on review he seems to like it just as much.

It's in "used" condition, but it works perfectly well. The power supply is one of Rane's standard weird jobbies with the telephone cable jack thing which has had that extra bit of plastic snap off. I still have it, and right now I just tape the power lead into the unit and it all works smoothly. I have printed out all the stuff from Rane's great website, so I could say that the manual is included.

Why am I getting rid of it? I'm a bit embarrassed to say, really. I want a compressor which has an IEC power jack (kettle lead) so it will fit in my rack with my power conditioner. Right now I use the Rane with an adaptor, but I want something which is easier and doesn't need to be bolted down inside the rack case. So yes, I am getting rid of the "best" rackmount compressor because I want one that fits better. As I said, a bit embarrassing!

For trades: I would like a rack compressor with an IEC jack. Something like a dbx, or a TC Electronics C300 or something like that, with a bit of cash difference either way if necessary.

The catch: I am in Sweden and will not be in the UK for ages, probably not before Christmas 2010. This means that any trades will need to be posted to me here. It's no harder than posting something domestically, but some people (for some reason) have a bit of a problem with sending stuff overseas.

For sale at £100 including postage.

  8. Are they stuck on cupboards?

I know what you mean about screws and walls. We've just moved, so I'm putting up wall hangers for a bunch of guitars and basses. Hard work!

  9.
Crikey! Wish mine was as white as that...! Mine's more of a creamy yellow now...
In all fairness, it isn't as white in real life (or real light) as it is in the pic. It is, however, in totally perfect condition and still quite white. It must have spent its life in a case under someone's bed, as it only has two small dings on it. I have a bit of a thing for white guitars, and its whiteness was what made me decide to buy this one.

    Free postage!

I now have enough from the sale of the 4 and 6 string set to get a set of EBs - 60% donation to basschat if bought direct! That's a tenner from you, of which £4 to me for postage and £6 to basschat.
Really? Cor, wot a fab deal and I get to help this site.

    In other words, bump.

    Edit: sold through Ebay.

  11. Here's one I have handy.

The Trace cabs have gone, replaced with a Marshall 15" cab (with a different speaker).

I don't have any other Duff gear as such. I do have a GK amp (the 400RBMkIV in the pic) which isn't the same one he has, but is still GK. I suppose it could be argued that his choice of GK influenced me, but I'm not really going for his sound or anything like that.

I think it's well cool that you have Duff's rig!

  12. Nice. I have an 80s Jazz Bass Special in white - it's the bass I had always wanted as a youngster and now I have it! I'm giving 5-strings a real shot at the moment, so the JBS is sitting in a case. It's a great bass - light, well balanced and makes nice noises. It's the one with the unpainted neck.

I'm a pretty big Duff fan too. I collect old GNR bootlegs, as well as Loaded, Velvet Revolver and Neurotic Outsiders, so I've seen a fair bit of Duff on video over the years. I also went to VR's last gig in Amsterdam. Bliss!

  13.
Reliced amps? Crackly pots, missing knobs, cut out, catch fire and electrocute the user.

    It's the way forward.
Already done. Fender do cosmetically aged amps. I'm sure a few tweaks here and there can sort out the missing knobs and electrocution which you want!

  14. I have an older version of the SR705 and I love it. I haven't played a Prestige, so I can't answer that part, but I say that the hype about Ibanez is true. They don't get much respect, though...

Three out of my four basses are Ibanez, so I'm perhaps not the most impartial chap to ask.

You are talking as if everyone reading BGM is, or should be, an aspiring pro musician. If they were the only readers of BGM it would have gone bust years ago.

Beginners and intermediates buy the magazine, loads of beginners.

Also the weekend warriors who do fine on a Squier and old Peavey TNT but who may just want to upgrade to something just a bit better.
That's the readership who are not being served (by the reviews anyway).
If that group is the majority, the next largest group probably consists of people who frequent gear forums (judging by how much of a response this thread has on this forum). Reviewing basses w-a-y out of our reach will anger us, whereas basses within or just outside our reach will make us subscribe.

The problem of getting companies to send basses for review may be severe, but it is not the readers' problem. As a reader, I don't care how much of a hard time the magazine is having getting basses in for review; I only care that the magazine has what I want to read in it. Things like typos, poor grammar and punctuation are also big things which need to be fixed. I see a lot of things which a simple spell check would correct, and there are times when I have read something a few times to understand it. If BGM doesn't care enough to check what it is publishing for the whole world to see, then I am not sure I can trust the reviews inside it (the quality of which has been brought up in this thread).

In short, when BGM can say the following, I shall renew my subscription:

    1. We review all types of gear in all price ranges in all issues (unless it is a special edition).
    2. Our reviews are impartial and informative because, as reviewers, we are judged on the quality of our reviews.
    3. We check the spelling, grammar and punctuation of everything we write because, as writers, we are judged on the quality of our written word.
