I have recently moved over to 5 string. I picked up an Ibanez SR705 (the older version of the model) from the classifieds here for a steal (£150), and I find it great. It has narrow spacing at the bridge - 16.5mm - and a narrowish neck too. I have always liked Ibanezes for their great necks, weight and balance. Slightly off topic, but I have not noticed any major problems with adapting to the extra string. This is perhaps because I was never a genius with 4 strings, but possibly because the bass is so welcoming. So, I would get an Ibanez. Get one with the SR5 neck, pref a neck-through with Barts, and take good care of it. If, in a few months, you decide you don't like 5ers, drop me a line!

Go custom! There's a chap on Ebay called Wildwesthog who makes straps. I got him to make me one for a treasured guitar and it is perfect. Not cheap, mind. Or...

Shameless plug for my Rotosounds which I would like to swap for Ernie Balls. I really like the EBs and have no problems with their sound after they have been played in. Like Mr Fudge, I prefer them when they are a little less zingtastic. I am not a fan of how Rotosounds feel, although they do sound really rather nice.
A bit of info: British Airways will let you take a "guitar size" instrument on the plane with you. This does not count towards your hand luggage. They will take it off you on the plane and put it in that cupboard at the front and/or back. Or, most likely, get you to put it in there yourself. He put it (at the cabin crews' request) in the cupboard thingie at the front of the plane. No problems. He was, however, told by folks when checking in that he may need to put it in the hold if the crew didn't want it onboard.

Relisted 5-string set! http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...em=270419774162 See last post for cool offer! Right...here is the deal. I recently acquired a very nice 5 string and the seller threw in a few packs of strings: Rotosound SM66 4-string set (40, 60, 80, 100) Long Scale Hybrid Gauge [Edit: now sold] Rotosound RS665LD 5-string set (45, 65, 80, 105, 130) Long Scale Standard Gauge http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...em=270413519005 Rotosound RS666LD 6-string set (35, 45, 65, 80, 105, 130) Long Scale Standard Gauge [Edit: now sold] They are unused, seemingly not taken out of packaging and all that, but I have no idea how old they are: I bought the bass a good few months ago but only had it brought over to Sweden just now. The string boxes are a bit squished (and the 5-string set has something "IBANEZ ONLY" written on it) but the strings themselves are in perfect condition, still coiled up and so on. Anyhooo...whoever is willing to send me two 5-string sets of Ernie Ball Power Slinkies (50, 70, 85, 105, 135 - the purple packet) gets them! No used strings, please. Not really interested in selling them outright for cash - wouldn't feel right and all that.

3 in Japan: Ibanez P/J, Ibanez 5er, Fender Jazz Special 1 in Korea: Ibanez SRX500
-
I have their SRX500 which I really like. If I could have any dream Ibanez (and I know this is not really on topic, nor helpful), I would have this one but with different pickups (pref ones which are a standard shape, so aftermarket pickups would fit) and a better preamp/control layout. I'd also want it in white. I love Ibanez basses. Whenever I'm going through a can't-be-arsed-to-play-bass phase (like now, I'm afraid), I just pick up my Ibanez and remember why I like playing bass so much. [Edit to add: ...because their necks are pure joy, the balance and weight are near perfect and so on. Ibanez basses feel like they were designed just for me. I like all of them!]

What was the gear outcome of 2008 for you?
JimBobTTD replied to JimBobTTD's topic in General Discussion
My 2009 is looking eventful, but a bit expensive. In: Gibson Les Paul Std ESP Eclipse CTM1 Warmoth Project Superstrat Out: Burny Mockingbird Bass Restoration Project Gibson SG LTD M400 All in all, 3 guitars in, 1 bass and 2 guitars out. And those last two guitars didn't stay in for very long. Still, the Les Paul and ESP are real keepers, so they were wise purchases. I didn't bond with the SG at all, so it was good that I sold it. The LTD...well, I kind of miss it, so I ordered a whole bunch of stuff from Warmoth (at eye-watering expense, I might add, but still not much more than a replacement LTD M400) to compensate. -

2009 is shaping up nicely. I sold my restored Burny Mockingbird project (finally...) and I have bought a Les Paul Standard. Now to sell off a couple of my guitars to finance it! Still, out with the so-so to good stuff and in with the great stuff which will stay with me forever. Now - now - it's no more stuff for me for at least six months! -
I now believe that i am gas free.
I say that to myself quite a bit too. Today I moved my Trace Elliot cabs to the shop to trade them for a Marshall 1x15" and a Marshall guitar cab. I now have a vaguely portable rig (the 15" really is quite light) which, now that the band isn't going to get off the ground, will take up less space at home until another band is found. Rig is now Bass > GK 400RB > Rane Comp (via FX loop) > Marshall 1x15". I can't get it much simpler and efficient than that. I see a 2009 with very few extra acquisitions ahead of me! -

It's the end of the year, give or take. Time to take stock! I am astounded - astounded - at the mass of new toys I have. I can cite a new band (which then never got off the ground) as a reason, but still...it's not as if I didn't have anything at the start of the year! The good news is that due to the sheer amount of tidying up and flogging of stuff lying around (misc guitar parts, pickups, bodies etc), it hasn't set me back much. In fact, excluding the 2 Gibsons, everything else has pretty much balanced out at zero cost. Also, excluding the LTD, everything was secondhand. Total: Basses: +3 (3 in, 0 out) Guitars: +1 (3 in, 2 out) Amps: -1 (0 in, 1 out) Cabs: +2 (4 in, 2 out) FX & misc: +3 (4 in, 1 out) In detail: IN Ibanez SRX500 Ibanez SR 5 string Burny Mockingbird body & neck Pickups, bridge etc for Burny Gibson Les Paul Jr DC Gibson SG LTD M400 Trace Elliot 1x15 Trace Elliot 4x10 Marshall 1x15 Marshall 1960A 4x12 Rane Rack Compressor ART power conditioner 8U Rack Wireless system thingie OUT Squier Tele II Custom Jackson bitsa shredmachine Fender Blues Jr Misc parts I've had around for a while Trace Elliot 1x15 Trace Elliot 4x10 Wireless system thingie (wouldn't work in Sweden) Go on, folks. What did you get up to during the year? (Groan...edit for bits I'd missed out)

I have - to my astonishment - five. Ibanez PJ Fender Jazz Bass Special Ibanez SRX500 Ibanez SR 5-string (still in the UK) Burny Mockingbird The Burny is on its way out. I restored it from firewood to a playable, good bass, but I can't get on with the shape. I can't seem to sell it locally, either. I only get idiot offers or timewasters. It all happened rather slowly. I had the Ibanez PJ as my only bass for 15 years or more. I got a Fender Jazz Bass Special to replace it, as the Ibby was too valuable to me. But then I realised that the Fender - it is in 9.8/10 condition - was too nice to take out and ding. I got the SRX, which is now my main bass. The 5-string is my first 5er and is an experiment. The Burny was a project which, as stated, was fun up until the project was completed. No plans for any new basses for a long while, especially now that the band doesn't seem to be forming. Ho hum.

guitar shops in london that are accessible
JimBobTTD replied to Dread Bass's topic in General Discussion
My brother used to work for an awareness charity thing, and it wasn't before he mentioned it that I had even considered how difficult just getting around London is. I haven't been back in London for a couple of years, but I don't recall seeing any lifts in tube stations at all. More on topic, I can't think of a single instrument shop in centralish London that doesn't have a narrow doorway and/or stairs and/or 90 degree turn. As said before, good luck and congratulations on three years.
