1. Oh dear. Either I got something which slipped through Quality Control or they are just cheap. Gap 12-13th fret: 21mm Gap 13-14th fret: 23mm Gap 14-15th fret: 25mm Gap 15-16th fret: 20mm There is also a nasty bit of discolouration on one of the mahogany-like strips on the body. A few finish problems, but those I can live with. The problems mentioned above I cannot accept. I got this to be a beater, but if I can't play above the 12th fret (not that I would want to, but I might!) I'll need a different bass. No good! So I'll be returning it. Though I must say, if the frets were not off I would love this thing. Lightweight, great unplugged sound, great neck and a great vibe. I haven't plugged it in yet...don't see the point either right now.
2. No, I don't think I could. I don't think I could get my dad to drive them over here either. "Hi Pops - fancy giving me a lift? It's only a few hundred miles and a huge ferry ride. Oh, they drive on the wrong side of the road there too." It's a bit of a bummer really, as those two cabs would have gone down a treat and a half!
3. Go for it. It's a lot of fun. I've made five so far (all guitars). If you want to get adventurous, get an unfinished body and do the painting yourself. It takes time, and makes a lot of mess, but it makes it more fun and more your guitar. I did that on two of them, and I like them the most. There are downsides, though. Resale value is low, so you will either have to part out the guitar on Ebay or watch it sell for 10% of what you paid for it*. It will also most likely not play well unless you take it in for a good setup, as simply bolting a neck on to a body does not a magical guitar make, so factor the cost of this into your budget. You could do the setup yourself, but you may want to get it done by a pro so it really is good. You can also hit compatibility problems too, even if you, say, only get Fender parts. The hardest thing I found was to look beyond the sentimental and try and look at the project objectively. No, it is not as good as a Custom Shop model. You will forgive your project for any minor flaws, but that doesn't mean it's the best thing ever made! *Although there is no way I would ever sell any of mine. No way. They are like children to me.
4. I wish I could get these two, but I have no way of getting them to my home in Sweden. Fantastic deal. Have a bump on me!
5. Heh heh...nice one, finnbass! Well, I got it. At £100 delivered, I thought I would take the risk. If I don't bond with it I'll be able to sell it locally, or use it for evil experiments. I'll write a report here later on.
6. Hello Every now and then I see some very cheap basses up on Ebay. One that has caught my eye is a through-neck from Harper, like this one: Harper bass on Ebay Every time I look at these things I hear echoes of old words of wisdom - Buy cheap, pay twice. So...what are these basses like? With modern factories, it is possible to make good things cheaply. But would this bass fall into that category? Am I being too old fashioned by thinking that anything that cheap can't be any good? And I mean good as in good, not "good enough for a beater" or "good enough at that price" or anything. Of course it won't be a patch on a lovingly handmade beauty, but would it even approach, say, Fender Mexico levels of good? Discuss!
7. Finally - a Duff sig bass! Hopefully they'll make it in black too, otherwise I'll have a hard time justifying it. But then again, with basses that lovely, it's so easy...
8. Nice bass, dood! Really nice! I nearly went with the Power version, but decided to hold back (unusual for me). Thanks for the welcome, Edwardhimself!
9. They are lovely. I was in my favourite guitar shop (in Stockholm) today and someone bought one. The manager said that he has been selling them as soon as he gets them in.
10. Thanks Cetera...yep, she's from eBay. I'll let you know if I ever intend to sell her, but see comment above about lusting after one of these basses for 15 years...!
11. Thanks, folks. I have no real idea of her history, but she is in absolute unplayed condition with the exception of 3 small dings. Incredible, really. She must have been left under a bed for 20 years. It's a shame really, as I got this bass to be my rehearsal and gigging bass. But I can't afford to buy things and not use them! (A case is next on my shopping list!)
12. Here she is! Got here today after a long journey, full of delays. Strung her with Rotosounds (which I have now found out I do not like - and I have a second set of them! ) Sounds great, looks great...everything I could have wanted. I have been lusting after one of these (on and off) since about 1992. Hurrah! (quick edit for a typing error)
13. I think the white would look classy. Understated, yet bright. You could have gold bridge/tuners etc if you wanted a bit more in-your-face fanciness. In fairness, I must add that I have an obsession with white guitars. I have 2 white basses, 2 white guitars and one more of each (in white, of course) I'm in the early stages of building. So I might be biased a bit towards white.
14. Hello. Just found this board. I've been playing guitar since I was 12, bass since 14. I nearly gave up the guitar completely to focus on bass, but didn't. I'm now looking to get back into playing in bands (after a good few years off). I still have my treasured first bass, an Ibanez Precision clone (with PJ pickups). She's a year older than I am, and I picked her up in Rockbottom in Croydon in 1992 for £70, if I remember correctly. Anyway, enough about me. I thought I'd just introduce myself so people can look for this post when doing a psycho?-check on me!!!
