I play in a 5-piece covers band and we were back in the local pub for NYE - having done a sterling job last year we were asked back. As usual we're squeezed in the corner with the drummer in a bay window, and me, next to the front door. Set 1 went very well with our usual crowd and some guests up and dancing fairly early on. During set 2 ( that's the 2245-2345 slot) some "young" things (student types) came in and they were already well-lubricated. They proceeded to a) take over the rather limited dance area effectively drive off the usual crowd c) dance whilst trying to hold a drink and ended up dribbling and sloshing wine and beer over the carpet and more worryingly - over my pedal board d) then started to intrude in my space - I got an elbow in the back as I had started to turn sideways on to protect my limited space e) some lass just came up and strummed my bass whilst I'm playing f) some oik decided to use my cab as a drinks table. The rest of the band played on and I was disrupted a few times by their antics and nudges. My misses came up and placed a spare shirt over my pedal board to soak up any more spills. Several people tried to speak to them but they were largely so far gone that it was not understood. I struggled to get my mind back in the right place. In the third set ( 0010 to 0050) I had a few friends come and stand between me and the "crowd". Fortunately, I had regained my composure and had a good third set. My pedals were OK - most of the volume of spillage was on the pub carpet. Thanks to the hardwearing Barefaced finish the drinks placed on the Midget made no lasting impact. I felt for the usual people who had come expecting a great night and got pushed out and somewhat intimidated by this new crowd. There isn't much room at the best of times. I guess that its a lesson to learn but I'm not sure what could be done to prevent it from recurring. We had some new songs which went well.
someone put his pint on my cab a few yrs back, i stopped playing, picked it up and downed it in one then handed him back the empty glass followed by a "cheers". Unffortunately he never put anymore on there.
That's a pain indeed. If it's any consolation, Deirdre Barlow's neck is even more unstable.
got 4 strings on it as well

Does it still clip if you turn the master right down then turn the gain up whilst plucking hard until clipping, then back off till clipping stops, you can then turn the master up as much as you want without clipping.

Make you right there Paul, We had a gig in Sweden with Andy Scotts Sweet and their drummer wouldn't let us swap his kit over to left hand, our drummer threw a wobbly, wanted to kill everyone and walked off, we had a trip to sweden for nothing as we never played, luckily expenses were paid.

Bang out of order that mate, no wonder you made a hash of it, The last time i depped i got ignored pretty much (apart from the drummer) in the break my gear was in the car and i was gone, not very professional i know but i was trying to do them a favour, i was only asking for expenses!!

What i done iirc is after cutting the shape i went round it with my router with a bevel router bit, it was ok but not a pro job so i took my spare blank to a music shop with my old scratchplate and he made me one for £13 which is a perfect job I also ordered 2 sheets also (good job i did)

I had a Stingray for a year, i loved the feel of it in the bedroom, ?? I gigged it for the first time and only played the first song with it, its now sold so P basses for me
-
I have an Epiphone viola and it is very awkward for me to play, i find the string spacing too close, maybe its because ive been playing long scale basses for 30 yrs?. Neck dive is BEARable with a wide strap, defo would recommend flatwounds tho.
SAHB! Sweet memories! First time I saw them was at the Alexandra Palace Rock festival in August 1973! I was 15, it was my first major rock festival. Uriah Heep topped the bill, but there was Manfred Mann's Earth Band, Gary Moore. Can't remember who else. I missed the last train home and slept outside Fenchurch Street Station with the winos. They opened with the Osmonds' 'Crazy Horses' as I recall. SAHB, not the winos. Pretty well unknown at that point but they were on Old Grey Whistle Test a short while afterwards (Next and Faith Healer) and became a big name act. I became a bit of a fan - saw them numerous times, including SAHB without Alex. I place Chris Glen in my top 10 bass players as I think he has a great feel for what he does. And Zal Cleminson is a manic genius on guitar. Still is. Great live shows.
i remember seeing a blues band play in a pub in Dartford Kent about 20 yrs ago, it was all eyes on the bassist, yep, Chris Glen, i didn't know who he was at the time but he played like a demon. -
Merry Xmas to all my brothers/sisters.
Played my last ever gig with the band I've been with for 13 years yesterday at the local Golf Club's Christmas party, before I retire to go travelling with the good lady. Brilliant! The guys made it into just the best night ever, changing the words of half of the songs in the second set (when the audience were well oiled) into anything that remotely sounded like or rhymed with "Bob" or "Sue" or "Bob and Sue"! (Sue is our lighting lady as well as having suffered wedded bliss with me for the last 37 years, so will probably be missed as much if not more than me by the band). Our front man must have told the audience half a dozen times that I was leaving that night, and in turn I was showered with hugs, kisses and adulation (!) from them. I dug my lucky bass players pork pie hat out of retirement, played the Pedulla Sue gave me 12 years ago on our silver wedding and don't think I made a mistake all night, and we all went back to one of the guy's houses for cheese, biscuits and whiskey afterwards. They gave me a big photo blown up onto that canvassy stuff to remember Breeze by, and its now in pride of place in the hallway, just in case any visitors don't believe I was once a 59 year old budding rock star...... Life just doesn't get any better than this, but as one door closes a new door has now opened to our latest phase of life as travellers, something we have wanted to do for ages, and now we are both retired and waiting delivery of our motor home has become a reality. Have to go now as I'm starting to well up writing this. Cheers to everyone here and have a great Christmas.
i wish you all the best Bob and Sue, hope you have fun.

Fender Ashtray and Neck pickup covers on a jazz bass
rogerstodge replied to dakanoosh's topic in General Discussion
The thing that surprised me when I tried a bass with them on was not the restricted access to the strings, but the weight of them causing the bass to roll forward away from me onto my lap. I don't know how that affects playing one on a strap. They do make a bass a little more ungainly, but they are a cool as anything! For a warts-and-all 'vintage' style bass, I'd have them on, I reckon.
mine hardly weigh anything? -
