4.
I'm glad you said that, being a DJ has taught me loads about timing & attitude towards music. It has been a big influence to me coming back to Bass. There are so many terms & stuff that is talked about on this forum I have literally no idea what it means, For instance I have no idea what a pentatonic scale is or a why the different scales have names that differentiates them from a normal scale.....if there is a normal scale. Here is how little my knowladge goes (gulp): if a dude plays a chord to me (Say for instance G) I know I can play G but I have no idea what other notes go with that chord.....I literally don't know.......I mean can you play anything ? .......say can i play G then D or would that sound wrong .......right now if someone says play G i'll just pump that note till the chord change. But i've seen other bass players play G.....then a whole lot more creating their own grooved bass lines that sound like a tune all of it's own.....how do they do that ? how do they know what to play ? this is all that I want to know, then I can stop this weird self doubt I am going through i suppose
as i said, i'm no expert, but to my understanding you can play any note that is in either the chord or scale of G. So D would work in that instance. look up pentatonic blues bass scale on you tube and you will instantly see where the majority of rock baselines come from.
 5. Stick one of your Acid Techno mixes on and jam along to that.
 6.
Just stay of YouTube. That site can really kill ones confidence
depends what you look for. it helped me.
 7. I know what you mean. I played bass as a teenager right through to my mid-20s when I jacked it in to spend the next 17 years as a DJ. Though I wasn't completely useless as a bassist there where limitations due to gaping holes in my knowledge of the instrument. When I returned to my first love, having not picked it up in the previous 17 years, I was determined to be a bit more "serious" about it. I found youtube a great help for learning different techniques as well as scales (pentatonic, relative minor, etc). I'm still no expert but my playing and writing have become a more fulfilling experience. Also, the 17 years behind the decks taught me a whole lot about groove and "less is more". Keep with it dude.
 8. nice one
 9.
I've often wondered if Peter Hook goes off stage at the end of the night in agony.Ever tried that stance? With the bass round your ankles?Personally I think it looks ridiculous, and you certainly would not have full control of fingerboard or r/h positioning. That has got to be uncomfortable. He probably thinks to himself "Why did I ever start playing in this bloody position?" The things we do for rock'n'roll.
I've heard he now suffers from some kind of damage at the top of his spine.
 10. This may be an obvious question to some of you but, she seems to have a strip of tape across the bridge, is that for muting purposes?

 12. For me, bass is all about the groove. Tina every time.
 13.
Get him to invest in one of these http://www.bossus.co...?ProductId=1043 Your guitarist wouldn't dream of playing his guitar without the use of effects - so why would a vocalist expect to sing dry. It has reverb, delay, compression, voice doubling (and trebling) and crucially ......... voice correction. I have one which I use mainly for the effects, but also use the voice correction, in very light mode, when I'm singing difficult numbers. Turns a modest performer into a wow sounding pro. Maybe you could even buy it for him as a present.
I took my daughter and her friends to a gig last week and the singer was using one of these. Was wondering what it was, thought it was a guitar pedal at the time.
 14. it's a "no" from me.
 15.
ASM has gone? Had no idea. Used to live in Kennington Park Road by the tube. It was a great shop.
Yeah, sadly the owner had a stroke, his brother and business partner had passed away due to a long illness a few years earlier. Their, very elderly, parents and sons tried to keep it going for a bit but they just couldn't manage it. Apparently they'd been struggling with the financial side for years. A sad loss for the family, Kenno and musicians generally.
 16.
I think it's better to relate the positives about our shops while we still have them. Elsewhere there's a thread about useless customers, its these that make some shop owners seem impatient to us. I suppose it might be inevitable but I'll regret the day we lose our music shops. Not sure how some survive as it is faced with the internet (especially the Amazon gadget which will show you the cheapest on line price from the shop barcode).
quite right. I was lucky enough to have a music store 5 mins walk from my flat for 17 years (ASM Kennington). Sadly, due to a bereavement, it had to close down earlier this year. I feel lost without it, I'd got so used to being able to get anything I needed (within reason) in a moments notice. Long live the local music shop.
 17. not sure his business record is that great.

 19.
In its melodic and historical context I'd go for Sir Paul on 'Something'.
+1
 20.
Thats bloody hard to listen too!
I feel the same way about Genesis.
 21.
In this case I believe steal = 'sample'. Being an early-adopting 'sampler' myself in the late eighties/early nineties I seem to remember a similar debate taking place at the time...
though agree that some artists may be guilty, most ensure that any samples are cleared. Unlike the Verve "Bittersweet Symphony" where I believe someone forgot to clear the Stones sample and they found themselves in a bit of bother. This is going a little off-topic though.
 22.
DJ's who err..., steal other people's music, and mix it up, a bit like paint
oh like this? mixed up a bit. http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=H-KKKs0f6hg
 23.
So how do people feel about the second hand market? If you buy a second hand cd you get some music, the artist makes nothing, and someone who isn't the artist makes some money on the sale. The more I think about it, the more that I think buying second hand cds is a bit morally dubious too.
but surely the artist has already made their slice from the original sale. it's not as though there is now 2 copies in existence.
