1. Wouldn't be happy if this was done to my bass without asking. Having said that I took a dremmel to the body of my P so I can fine tune the truss rod adjustment without taking the neck off. There is a good reason that the truss nut moved up to the headstock end of the neck - it;s a pain in the arse taking the strings / neck off to move it 1/4 turn
2.
Are you open to trades, I've got 2012 BMW 320d lo mileage if you are interested.
Seeing as it's not a stack-knob, the pick-up is rewound, and there are a couple of dings how about a trade for my 2007 high mileage Peugeot 307SW? It's a great gig-wagon and I've got the extra seats that go in the boot.
3.
Shops are overpriced. If you have £1500 then you're already in the ballpark for a mid-late 70's Fender (e.g there's a '77 on here for £1500), so if what you really want is a vintage Jazz, I'd say either hunt down a private-sale late-70's one, or save a bit more and find a private-sale mid-70's one. Nothing new will be the same as a real vintage instrument (maybe from some of the relic'd stuff might get close, but IMHO a lot of that is overpriced and too-far overdone with the belt-sander) - if you want new I'd suggest the AVRI stuff, but new it's around the same price as a real 70's Fender (e.g ~£1800 for an AVRI '74 jazz)
Glad its not just me that thinks the budget the op has should buy a 70's jazz.I'd try offering the shop what you can afford-there's a lot of optimistic overpricing of not very old fenders and the worst they can say is no.
4.
God what have I started here lol!
....a fight probably. Jaco threads generally head the same way as p vs. j threads.
5. Sometimes liking a particular bit of music just doesn't matter. This video is worth watching just to see the connection that music can make between people.
6. In a gig situation I've had no probs either, but when recording with a big band at lower volumes the 'noise' from the tweeter was noticed by anyone nearby and was a pain to be honest. I was Di'd so didn't affect the recording but it's dead quiet now with the HT-30, with an even more open top end without the noise or any harshness. as an upgrade I think it's a no-brainer to be honest, and I was a fan of this combo to start with.
7. Replaced the Le son piezo tweeter in mine with a Stage Line HT-30 Minature Horn Tweeter. £12-13 online, remove (4xphilips screws) grill, remove (3x philips screws) tweeter. Use a large file / small saw to enlarge the cutout at the bottom until HT-30 drops in. The wires are push fit, blue + black - . Test and enjoy clearer more 'airy' sound without the hiss of the piezo unit. Bear in mind this will invalidate any warranty and make what was a great combo almost perfect. i plan to do the same with an NY121 cab when funds permit.
8. What about getting an AVRI '62 neck (plenty pop up on ebay)? You could probably sell it on without losing dosh, it would cost less than a real pre-CBS neck, and you could have it altered without trashing an antique. The neck on my AVRI 62 jazz is as skinny as I think anyone would ever want, the only problem might be stability over time if you use hight tension/heavy gauge strings.
9. first and last for me, it gives you a clear picture of relief at around frets 7-9. I find the relationship between relief and string height really changes the whole feel of my basses for better and worse.
10. Any plans for an Android version?
11. Any opinions on all the 'extras' you can opt for ordering on their site - the extra padding, handle holes, board pockets and other stuff? It seems they can quickly become an expensive option if you go for all the options, is the basic spec adequate?
12.
Mark was a real pick player, bass picking is sometimes frowned upon by bass snobs, usually because they can not do it right, its an art-form of picking on harmonic spots to get that magic tone. Become a forgotten art reserved to the old masters these days , bass picking is to the bass what broken chords are to guitarists.
I'll admit that when I last listened to the album (probably around '85) I always thought it was either synth, slap or both blended on a lot of the tracks. I'm good with the old 'Carole Kaye' muted flats style, but this is making me think about popping on a fresh set of rounds and having a play! Off to amazon to get WTTPD on cd.
13. I've noticed GAK can be naughty for showing or at least implying stuff is in stock until you get to the checkout stage - I've found soundslive a bit more honest or at least clear in this respect.
14.
This is where i get them from http://www.stringsdirect.co.uk/
Yep, they seem to consistently do the best online price. It was worth looking on US/EU suppliers when the £ was running high a few years ago, but not anymore as far as I can see.
15. I've got the (well broken in)jazz rounds on a passive J bass, and I honestly think there are not many sounds / situations they don't cover. The flats are on my p and I love the sound but don't think they are as versatile.
16.
I've heard it said many times, on here, in video reviews and by people I know, but can a one pick-up passive bass carry off any musical style? Opinions wanted for a quiet Sunday!
Yes it probably can, but that does not mean it is the best option for many styles, just a decent option.
17. I've had one of these for a few years. If you are after that MM sound it's brilliant but I'm more into the sound of a passive jazz with alder/ rosewood than the ash and maple combo. If I'm honest I should probably sell it for all the use it gets, but the neck just feels so great I'll probably persevere for a while. on the subject of the ugly pick-guard, the routing itself is pretty neat and it should be possible to get a much smaller custom PG made if you can either live with all the screw holes on the top or afford a fill/refin job. I'm not sure how this would affect resale value though?
18.
Ha! I was toying with the idea of a white Vox curly lead to match the guitarist's, but really didn't like the idea of not using my trusty obbm lead... you can't beat an obbm lead.
+1 used and frankly abused my obbm's for around 6 years with no issues.
19. Got to be that Fleetwood Mac tune used for F1.!
20. Just looking (drooling) at these combos on the MB site and was wondering if any of you have tried both. I'm struggling to see what the extra £50ish for the Berlin gets you beyond no tweeter, the knobs on the front instead of the top and slightly bigger overall size. Is there any real sonic difference?
21. Great rig and a great price if you look at what these heads and cabs generally go for.
22.
Not sure if this willl be of any help but here are a few comments on the subject from talkbass: ... there should be a detent washer under the lower knob so it doesnt spin on accident when you raise or lower the volume ... you have to leave a little bit of space in between the two knobs when you tighten them on, or they will catch on each-other when you turn them- causing either a really rough turning action or causing both knobs to turn when you are only trying to turn one. ... it is also easy with stacked knobs to tighten them on slightly crooked, which can result in one knob getting caught on the others while turning.
^^^ This. Sorted now thanks. Feel a bit of a plumb TBH for not thinking of this, but it seems instinctive to tighten all the knobs down as far as poss. Just lifting the top one 1mm on each pot combined with the good clean I already gave them mean all the controls are like butter now - happy days!
23. Cheers ikay. I'm sure one of these 3 things will be the cause - time to start tampering again.
24. I've a jazz with stacked V/T controls for each pick up. Recently I'm having trouble getting the tone and volume (inner and outer) controls to work independently as they should. When I turn the volume down the tone gets rolled off, and when I adjust the tone the volume moves as well. I've taken the knobs of and given everything a good clean, but the problem persists. I'd be grateful for any advice or suggestions.
25. I found the PU's on my AVRI P a bit boomy also -particularly on the e-string. Swapped them for SD AntiquityII's and it tightened things up down the bottom without losing any "thump". There was a reason I went for the II's rather than the Antiquity 1, but I honestly can't remember now. I'd be interested to compare with the wizard and nordstrand vintage repro PU's but I'm not made of money and the SD's are doing fine.
