Point is that the players in the bands crafted the lines. I am sure that we can play a lot of the lines but we did not write them and were not part of the creative process. So indeed Adam Clayton and Andy Rourke did indeed influence the sound if their respective bands. Would someone else have played I will follow (U2) or bigmouth strikes again (smiths) the same? I doubt it. More often than not it is nothing to so with technical mastery. I could easily cover in the smiths, but I did not create the lines
His fingerstyle playing is at least as impressive as the slap stuff. I did find it funny how far back in the mix the guitar was when it came to his solo - not too often that the guitar is overshadowed by the bass that much!
Don't forget there is alot of preprogrammed synth bass on this track - on the verses especially. So when he is fingerstyling, it seems secondary to the synth line. Same on Running in the Family and LEssons in love. No less impressive though.

Obviously I cannot slap like Mark, nowhere near. But I can sing and play drums really easily, and certainly more easily than when playing bass. So I reckon Mark's ability on a drum kit might have something to do with not only his phenomenal slapping but also his ability to knock out a tune with his tonsils at the same time.

My Top Ten Most Played Songs by Pub & Function 'Covers' Bands.
We got hold of the Top 30 charts in a number of different Genres, ( Soul-Motown-Pop etc. etc.) as voted for by working DJ's at DJ Online and picked our set-lists from there. One of the agencies we work for suggested this route and provided all the info. And Mustang Sally and Brown Eyed Girl etc. are on there.
. Absolutely. -
I've got one of these - well, an old 812W, but looks the same in terms of tuners and pickups at least. These are ace guitars, I bought mine instead of a Fender USA Strat as I preferred this one and at the time the new list was basically very similar (it was 15 years ago I think). So whoever has this will not be disappointed. Hugely playable and very versatile guitars.
Ok great! - It just seemed to my ears that the timing was out. I must say how different it sounds on its own though!

I think most of the negative comments are from people who don't understand how ensemble music works from the POV of the individual instruments. It's largely ignorance really. The bass sounds a bit sloppy on its own, of course it does.
I think it just shows how older / classic recordings are not quantized to a click. They move around, speed up, slow down, push and pull - it is this human element that gives things their unique feel. Couple of examples: Chic - Good Times - I heard a recording of the bassline solo'd - form a radio programme (wish I still had it). On it's own it is way behind the beat, and sloppy, but with drums that are bang on the nail it just breathes and grooves. I think many of us know that is is a charateristic or Mr Edwards, one of the finest players to grace the instrument. The Police - Stewart Copeland's drumming is constantly pushing in many songs - not speeding up, but simply right at the front of what is possible in terms of the pocket. Sting however, is a tasteful if slightly sloppy and very laid back player. together it works to give the songs their own sound. And apparently this is why they always used to fall out. There are millions more examples. It makes music human.

I've just drummed along to it, and it sounds great. Roger and John made a very nice dynamic and fluid rhythm section.
I don't mind you banging on about it, that's what I started the thread for! I'm curious - why is the 121P not as loud as the 121H, if they both have the same head and same driver size? So far I'm torn between the 121P and the midget - I'd have to spend a lot if I went for the midget as I'd get a more powerful head to pair with it, but I do like a middy tone, and I think the midget might be louder. This is all from research though, I haven't tried either. I love the idea of a combo though and I like markbass cabs...
Maybe not louder but it sounds a little fuller due to the fairly large enclosure.
-
And at risk of banging on about it, the mini one is so easy to manage that is it just like taking and ordinary flight cased mid weight head along, but happens to have a speaker in it too, and a 300 output used alone. So another cab is jsut like taking one cab, if you get my meaning...
I wanted a lighter, more compact rig, but was worried that it wouldn't cope. In the end, I saw the Markbass for sale here at what seemed like a fair price and just took a deep breath and went for it. I still kept my old rig, till I was sure, on the basis I could sell the new one if it didn't work out and not lose a lot, if anything. Unless you can find someone who'll lend you one for a gig, really all you can do is take some advice, do some research, and go with your instinct. The worst thing at first was not having that pile of rock gear behind me. But that feeling reduced every time I made 1 trip to the car instead of 3.
Good comments. Careful though OP, this post refers to the bigger CMD121H, not the tiny mini CMD 121P I think. The 121H has the head facing forwards, and is a fairly substantial size, and although not heavy, is definitely not what I would call small - it is quite deep. Very loud though and will do the job as described no prob. I am on my second MINI CMD121P (has the head vertically at the back. The fact that I am on my second tells a story about what I think of them. Crazy light and crazy small, but not as loud or as full sounding as the larger one, obviously. However, I have gigged it alone in small isn pubs, no issue. My advice - buy the mini one. Used if poss, and then you could sell on if it is not right, but I think it would be ok, given the inevitable compromise that the tiny size will involve. Then save up for the matching 121 New York cab, and you have a little monster rig. I partner my current one with the small traveller 210, and it is awesome. MY last one I used with the larger MB 210, same awesome results.

you know what, I am sooo glad I have returned to Markbass after a few years away. Awesome gear, so clear, and the 102p is a great little cab. Wicked under a mini cmd 121 p. Sounds excellent.

OK, so I am not letting this go now. I have recently returned to the Markbass fold, and this bass absolutely kills it through my new rig. I mean, seriously growly, powerful and versatile. It does nice J and P bass sounds, and can get seriously honky if you want it to. Lovely. I think I will now look out for a nice passive Jazz bass to complement it. I used to have one, but foolishly sold it a few years back.... -
Thank you all for your replies, I'm going to look into the ACS ones, especially as they seem to be available on most high streets. What decibel reduction is a sensible number? I want to get some that will suit my needs as a player and also standing in front of Lemmy's PA
I'd get 15 they are just right for me at least
I wasn't aware that there was a contest offered
First rule of earplug fight club.....don't talk about earplug fight club. I've got 2 sets of filters - ER25 and ER15. The 25s I reserve for loud drumming, but even then they are a bit much.

Custom ACS ER 15 filters. No contest.

Seen it. Come on, who is it? -
I had this set up - 2 of 112ext and a STM 600. Good and very nice on their own. I think it is a matter of personal taste but the head was not for me ( although I initially thought it was, and I now have a Markbass rig again and it is like coming home to an old friend
