Just bought a Sadowsky Preamp from Andy. Was at my door less that 24 hours after agreeing a deal. Wouldn't hesitate to do business with him again. Pleasure.

Yeah pretty much. It's all built modular so anything can be added or removed at anytime. Might look at sticking some overdrive in once I've got the filtering and noise perfected.
-
It's currently a simple design, it's a box on the floor sort of thing like a sansamp. It's a final year project for my BSc in Audio Systems. The prototype is almost done but have already planned major improvements. I am hopefully going to document my work on it a bit more once uni is finished.

I've never used Active pickups but I would imagine it would depend on where in the chain the power is decoupled from the signal. If the circuit is decoupled at the tone pot then you should be able to get away with using a single battery. However I would imagine the signal coming into your active preamp will be biased back at 0V and will need a second supply for it to operate. I'm sure someone will be able to give a much more certain answer but I think thats how it would work.

I can in detail explain a active filtering system I adopted for my preamp designs. In short, summing a inverted band passed signal with the input so the 'mid cut' frequencies cancel each other out. You also can adopt pots and extras to make it parametric. I have no answers for passive designs unfortunately.

At peak, my P bass measured roughly 0.6Vpk (gave it a right twonk). Line level is 1.737Vpk. So after a few calculations, roughly 9dB of gain is needed to bring instrument level up to line level. Obviously this will vary significantly every time you repeat it but it offers a fundamental starting point. For single supply rails you have to DC bias the signal to allow full swing through an op amp. Biasing a 9v battery at 4.5v theoretically gives you 3.9Vpk of gain to play with. Practically it will be less, more like 3Vpk because op amps wont swing fully to their supply rails. Don't take my word on this but I think your average 9v battery can kick out around 12dB before distorting. Thus deducting, a 9v battery will suffice. 18v means you can push a much greater signal out of the bass for driving the next stage if required.
Measure twice, cut once
If only there was a 'Like' button on basschat!
Look forward to hearing more Dave. If you're considering throwing the old neck anyway, is there any harm in having a go at repairing it ?
I had considered that and still might look more into it. I am going to be fitting a P bass neck to this project though! Was actually thinking about hanging it on a wall as art!

Hi there! A long time reader of many blogs and forums regarding bass repairs and builds I've finally decided to stop reading and start doing. I've just started a blog about a project I am undergoing with my much loved jazz bass. I thought I would share this link with you guys because I imagine it would interest some of you! http://allthatjazzbass.blogspot.com I'm competent with electronic installations, builds and designs but wood work and other hardware issues will offer a great learning curve for me. If anyone has any advice please feel free to comment! Cheers, Dave
But anyway, I'm the aforementioned previous owner, and it really is a stunning bass. Sounds great, feels great, everything's great. In fact if I was rolling in cash right now I'd probably buy it back. And Dave is a good guy to deal with.
Cheers, Mel. It will leave me a with a heavy heart, such a unique and wonderful instrument. -
She is in great nick considering she is about to go into her 18th year of service. There are signs of cosmetic wear but nothing that effects the sound or playability of this instrument. Made in 1994, the words 'Made in West Germany' are found on the tuning pegs. The Wenge neck is the epitome for bass necks IMO. The bass balanced so well with the extended arm and weighing under 9lbs it is great for those long sets. Great versatile MEC electronics, anything from blues p bass style to jaco solo style with the P/J Pu's. Had it professionally set up when it was restung and what a good move that was. Action is sitting low evenly across the wenge fretboard. This bass would be well into the thousands if you were to go custom shop at warwick. Asking £400 + Courier.
