Steve just bought a pickup from me. Nice easy, quick transaction. Would be happy to deal with him again. Thanks Steve.

Rather nice. Is that a massive coffee table they're standing on?

Congratulations Sir. That is nice. I'm always a softie for a piece of nicely grained wood, and that fits the bill. I like the pearl white PG too. Nice one. May you both be very happy together.

Hi there, I'm getting into the swing of a 5 string and bought this with a view that I might take the frets out if I get to like it. It's a Peavey 5 with a mahogany body. The weight is good. It's got Kent Armstrong humbuckers and it's not bad. What I can't get round is the controls. The last owner fitted the pups, wiring them as 2 volumes and 2 tone controls. In short, it doesn't work. The volumes seems to work, but the tone controls seem to adjust the volume too, so something's not right. I'll sort it out. The circuit is all passive, so I'm thinking the easiest route would be V, V, T. But this would leave a spare pot/hole. Can anyone, looking at this tell me, what would it have had originally? I'm thinking I could fit a pre-amp. But this would really need a battery holder to be fitted. The existing cavity could take it, but it would be better sense to fit a separate box that doesn't need a screwdriver. I think I'd prefer to stick with passive, but what do the committee think?
Thanks very much for the heads up on the block. Any recommendations on strings? Thinking of ghs precision but I want to make sure I get the best strings for my bass.
Please define "best"? All these things are subjective. Different strings will give different tones. What sort of music will you play? Do you have any idea of the sound you want? What's your budget?

Artec looks interesting, but isn't 27mm deep? I'd have to measure to see if that would fit. Thanks anyway. I'm sure Artec konw what they're doing, or they wouldn't sell anything.

I'll probably be a lone voice here, but IMHO the bass playing is nice, but I prefered the original video without the bass. I felt the bass cluttered out the beauty of the rhythm of the vocals. Thanks for posting. Enjoyed it all.
I've been pretty disappointed with the customer service at Warwick - nothing short of poor TBH - why not get yourself a quality Spector - after all it is their design..
But the Warwick version looks more refined IMHO. Also, fie my own perspective, I buy "used" I'm not expecting any customer service.
I shall use the opportunity of this thread to discharge some bile for therapeutic effect (sorry if that's prompted an unpleasant visual image). Any attempt at any form of creativity was met with: at best, "don't bother me know"; at worst, "you should stop that bloody rubbish and get out and play some football". My elder brother (Trueno Major) has always twiddled with guitar and did encourage me in all kinds of ways. I have spent a lot of time since my mid-twenties playing different instruments, learning to read music, and picking up a lot of musical theory... I suppose there was no-one to discourage me then. As some others have intimated here, family is no big deal for me... may sound weird to some, but that's the way it is.
You don't get the chance to choose your relatives and not all families are ideal. You're not alone. After all, isn't playing football likely to be just a big a waste of time as a career strategy?
La Bella wanted a recording. Seriously. Get a free set one dead string at a time... DR are useless in my experience with customer service. It's a shame because I love their strings!
Mine was Rotosound. A G-string brome as I was fitting it. It had to go back to their lab and it took a month for them to get to the stage where I could go back to the shop and collect the single G string replacement.

Now if this had been another large manufacturer I could mention they would have said "send us back the old one and we'll look at it".
Bc Fender buyers like overpriced basses?
I never mentioned price. I'm not saying Fenders at any level are over priced. A big contribution Fender has done for contemporary music is they brought instruments to the masses. By doing for instruments what Henry Ford did for cars, instruments have become affordable and so came into the hands of school kids. Fender has given the world and easy method for making a guitar, that is being followed by countless copyists all over the world. It's thanks to Leo that you can buy a great payable bass from Gear4Music for less than £100. Ok, that may not make great commercial sense, but would Gear4Music have got there with Fender showing the way?

Bass too bright, loud 'clacking' when strings hit frets

Height:- Ahh I was thinking if it was to do with finger attack angle. -
I agree. I should have said in my original post the two basses I have sound slightly different, but they are both clearly Ps
Yep, but in the mix with a Big Muff on, the difference will be so tiny that it really won't matter. That said, "Vive la differance!". Enjoy the variety, even if nobody else notices.
Yeah sure, I can ask, was asking here in case there was an obvious fix I could do myself.
I appreciate that. You sound like you're getting frustrated. The answer is that without seeing the bass in your hands, or in our hands, there is no obvious answer. If you were to find a solution we'd be interested to hear. Did the "clack" happen before it was setup? Does it clack when someone else plays it? Do you have the bass at the same height as the other bass(es) you have that don't clack? Maybe you could try swapping straps, to check this, without re-adjusting the strap length. -
I too have lots a different basses which all sound different when I play them on their own. However when I play them with my band, the way I play them and the way I EQ them to fit into the band mix means that ultimately those differences become virtually negligible. I find that the same happens when I play the guitar too. I tend to pick my instruments because of how they look, because they all play exactly how I want them too, and by the time I've adjusted my technique and a little tweak of the amp and effects settings and they all sound essentially right.
+1 There are a number of folk here who're always saying: "All basses sound the same" "No such thing as tone wood" "It's all in the fingers"... I wonder how many of these folk never play the bass in isolation, seldom without effects and overdrive, and have tinnitus or other hearing problems? Agreed, if you're in the mix with effects etc the differences are very small, but just because YOU can't hear it, it doesn't mean it's not there. There was another thread where folk were saying there's no difference in sound between a P and a J. Well when I play a 2 pup bass I can hear the duet of the pups, and it's not all in the mind.
Possibly this proves that there's no such thing as tonewood and that most hardware doesn't make too much of a difference to the sound...?
Then why do no 2 identical spec Fenders sound the same? And if I'm wrong, why do Fender players keep GASsing and buying and selling almost identical basses? Oh, I get it, variety in paint colour. Besides there's no other difference is there?

I know how frustrating and annoying this can be. Do you live near to The Gallery? Have you tried taking the bass back to Martin at the Gallery and talking with him? As you know, there's more to his knowledge than your average bass tweaker. It would be useful to hear what Martin has to say. I'm sure he won't charge for looking at it and advising. -
Good work Richard, it's very pleasing to sort this sort of problem isn't it?
Yes, it's been satisfying. All I've got to do now is take it all apart again now to work on the body and get that looking good. This one is a bit moth-eaten.

Successful evening! I've sorted out the dry joint and checked all the others. Then refitted everything again and its all working well again. Thanks everyone for the support and encouragement.
