1. I think what Dood may be suggesting is one of the pups thst has on coil under the E and A, and a second coil under the D and G. I've heard the claims that it sounds like a P split coil. Can't say I've tried it.
2. Really nice bass. I'm surprised this hasn't had much attention.
3. Back on topic... If you don't mind! Just looking on ebay just now i found a 51p pup for less than £55 posted. It's a hand-made "Baytone" from John Anthony guitars. That could be worth looking into.
4.
He he!! - My girlfriend found the instant coffee in the fridge the other day. I've no idea how I managed to put it in there!!
Well it's less problematic than the wife finding the girlfriend in the bed. One's a senior moment, the other is less easily explained away. Not that I've been there.
5. If you're after a hollow body, how about a Warwick Star bass? http://basschat.co.uk/topic/273649-warwick-rockbass-star-bass-4-string-black/page__hl__star
6.
No probs man. I hope you got them. You could pop the wee metal disc with the Westone logo straight into one of those. They are the same tuners as are already on your bass.
Yes, I got a set. Plus our good friend with the tuners is running in a 10k run in aid of the Samaritans. So I was invited to make a donation. Did so, with pleasure, of course. https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/Chris-Kowalski1 ... just in case anyone else would like to give to this admirable cause.
7. Don't you just love it when the OP asks a question and then never responds to anything again?
8. I asked the same question some months ago in relation to fitting strings to me Warwick Thumb. What I ended up doing was filing the bridge to make the gap wider to get the string through. You still need to clamp the string narrow to get it to fit through, but it was an answer to the problem.
9. Jon will be along later I'm sure and he'll confirm of course, but this looks like the same body as the Westone headless. I had one it was ok. The tone was quite aggressive. As they would both have come from the Matsumoko factory, sharing a body shape between Westone and Aria would be very possible.
10.
I need this bass in my life, I live in Scotland, can we please be united?
This is indeed possible. Let's speak in PM.
11. When the Mods see this it ma be best to move it to bass Repairs and Technical. It isn't normal for A, D or G to run out of saddle movement for intonation. I've never used Ernie Ball strings. I know they're popular with guitarists. So presumably their bass strings are ok. Intonation at the 12th fret can often appear difficult to set. The best way to do this can sometimes be by playing harmonics, rather than actually fretting the note. The reason for this is when fretting the note you will be stretching the string as you press down. The degree of stretch is dependent on the action height. Your best course of action is to wind the saddle back to a more normal position, re-tune the bass and start again using harmonics.
12. Re-listed again! Does he never give up with the same old lies? Yawn
13.
Here's a really beautiful example of piccolo bass. A fretless this time. This guy is amazingly talented. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=OzVNGz6Bx2A
That is really nice. I know where we can buy 4string sets of piccolo strings, bug does anyone know of any 5 string sets?
14. OHM you are mad. This is a great amp. I love mine. I got the European version though GLWTS Buy with confidence. OHM is a good guy.
15. The pictures link is already dead. IBTL
16.
Here's a set of Vantage (another Matsumoku make, of the same era) tuners for sale. Re-branded Gotoh's ... http://basschat.co.uk/topic/291113-vantage-gotoh-tuners-22-2-full-sets-to-give-away/page__pid__3125160#entry3125160
Ace opportunity! Many thanks
17. What I use a lot are the rhythms that come on my Zoom B3. I have to say there's not a massive selection, but the pedal has many other uses too. One additional feature is also a blooper, so you can even build other rhythms using your bass, and then build on it from there. Well it's good enough for Vic Wooten.
18.
1964- 1974, back in the late 60d and early 70s the electric bass guitar was prominent and up front in the music from many movie sound tracks, many pop, rock R& B and of course funk recordings. In most contemporary recordings the bass and lead guitar have taken a back seat. And remember we had top 40 radio back then in the US. We haven't had top 40 radio in decades. Blue
I'm on holiday in Bulgaria right now. A few restaurants are playing what might be called "golden oldies". Most are pumping techno club tracks. In some respects we live in sad times. It's almost like we have gone back to 50s/60s UK: back then the BBC wouldn't recognise Rock n Roll. The young of the day had to dig deeper to find music to excite. The places you looked to were the pirate radio stations like Caroline and Luxembourg. Today to find new exciting bass we need to dig deeper than what the BBC offers to find many of the key in ovations in the art. Yet when you find them it is good and worth the effort. Even on TV when a band is on, the bass player hardly gets a look in. Often during the bass solo you will be shown shots of the guitar or the drummer. Ps. another great who brought bass to the front of the stage was Sting.
19. You've got me thinking too about my playing. I've been in a band, but my work schedule is demanding and I've drifted into playing music scores and fixing up basses. I don't address my need to be able to do what you do and play along with a track in a simulated band situation. I'm away on holiday atm, but I must deal with this when I'm back. I'm no different to you.
20. "Diatonic Harmony".... that's the term I was trying to recall. Yes, I can see getting into a band is a great education. I salute you for that and singing in particular. There must be a massive temptation though, to simply blag your way through and never go into depth until a need hits you between the eyes. At least the learning resources are so much easier and better now. It's good to have met you.
21. Ahh.... yes. More resources: www.studybass.com http://www.arianecap.com Ariane does a great theory book just for bass. Edit: Mrs G is here and just told me this. Her mother is a piano teacher. In her time she's taught 70 and 80 year-olds to read and study up to grade 7 & 8 piano.
22. Hey BigYin, I'm not a DB player. I don't normally venture to these lofty heights of BCland, but... I picked up bass at 50, following my divorce from a non-approving wife and marrying a pianist. At 57 I'm still learning and one day I hope to have the skills you have. On my journey I have met some really useful folk. One really great guy is Geoff Chalmers. He runs a site called www.discoverdoublebass.com on there are many lessons for DB. Aside of all that, isn't being able to do walking bass not a matter of being able to know the changes and being able to play a groove of changing/evolving notes from the chords/scales that go with each change? If the answer to this is "yes", then you need to know some theory to be able to know if it's a Major, Minor or Minor-b5 you need to play in order to fit in and play the right notes. Where i learned about this was Scotts Bass lessons accademy. In fact, writing this now is making me aware there's a term I want to use to describe this and I need to go back to the accademy to find it. Also, on my path I learned to read. Doing it on dry, boring stuff was painful. So I created my own stuff to read and get into it. I've already published it all here for free: http://basschat.co.uk/topic/215336-learning-to-read-the-dots-sheet-music-to-learn-with/page__fromsearch__1 I hope some of my ramblings will help a bit. Good luck and keep with it Bro! You'll get there. Life isn't over yet! I'm only beginning mine. Hey, I might even gig one day!
