1. Tomorrow I'll post some pictures. The soldering had to be seen to be believed. It's now all sanded smooth with 2500 grit and 0000 wool. The body has come up well too, with oil. Nitromores did a nice job of getting rid of the varnish off the neck. Thankfully, I didn't lose the dots off the side either.
2.
The pearl white one, have you tried it on a fender? Wouldn't mind a change for my tort guard for a bit and wondered what the fit would be like. Andy
It was sold to me as a Fender pickguard. I don't think I've actually used it on a Fender. In fact it's not been used on anything yet.
3. Mrs G and I went to his recent London gig. It was the second time we'd been to see him. This time we had a treat to see Janek Gwizdala on stage with him; both in a dual for the lead role, with Anthony Wellington in the background playing the traditional bass line role. That was all impressive stuff. But quite frankly it was very self-indulgent in our opinion. We left early as we simply felt we'd seen it all before. In the morning I wrote to Anthony Wellington and told him we really enjoyed his playing. Just felt I wanted to let the guy know that while he may have played 2nd fidle it was his playing we liked best. I got a really nice reply from him too.
4. Hi Gioby, Could you please take a good picture of the whole of the body, and of the whole of the bass, in good light, without reflections (as much as you can). I think the body and the wood will look really nice, but I'd like to see it clearly. I might be interested, if I can sell my Thumb to get the money, but your pictures aren't very clear. Many thanks
5.
I'm pretty sure there's a market for oval playes, Rich. Reading through the Fender forums, I'm amazed at the attitude of a number of posters just stating that 'Leo got it right,' and saying nothing else. I favour a right-angled jack and the Hamer is the only bass in my arsenal that utilises this arcane connection. The flippage is a means to an end!
... like Henry Ford got it right. I keep telling you; go buy a Model T and you won't wish for anything. "There's no better bridge on the market than a BBOT"
6. I've actually had this bass a few days now and I'm getting on with the work that needed doing. I bought it as one that the previous owner had refurbished to a "high standard" with quality parts. In fairness to him he'd used Gotoh tuners, DiMarzio pups and a Babitz bridge, so it's not at all bad. Finish was interesting though, the body and neck were stripped and "sealed" using Lemon oil. The result he'd got was the same as I I got when I'd tried Lemon oil; it's just like you'd done nothing to it. What folk see in that stuff escapes me. Further to this, he'd finished the fingerboard in Gunstock varnish. Nice huh? Nice Hipshot knobs too. The only other problem at this stage was the tall knobs had got knocked and one's bent. So the stacked pot doesn't work. And so I set to work...
7.
Hey, I like that
I don't. I was well into my plans on how I could corner the market in making small oval plates! Foiled! After 2 whole days of market research and and R&D!
8. Still here after i took it off the boil for a bit
9. Studybass.com it's really useful. Also, I did a thread of music in bass clef that's good for practice. I'll post a link later. Later: http://basschat.co.u...__fromsearch__1 I started bass at 50
10. Hi All, I've recently treated myself to an Ibanez bass to do up as a project. It's all stripped and done and now I'm putting it back together. The Gotoh battery box never really worked like a "well oiled machine" when I started, but now I can't seem to close it like it should. I'm aware there is a right-way round to put the battery in. Yet both ways round it seems a pain. Has anyone else had this problem? Are these usually troublesome? Should I buy a new one? They cost about £10. So it's no great shakes, but if there's something I'm doing wrong.... On the other hand, am I better off just getting a cover and a battery terminal clip?
11. As I hear it when I'm playing finger-style I think the P split coil gives a high-amplitude thump emphasis at the beginning of the note, where a jazz single-coil is more uniform through the length of the note to my ears. That said, it's subtle. but i can also hear it when others play too unless it's thrash. I don't think it's enough to be a really big deal though. I've got both and like them both for playing different things.
12.
Hi, Ian There is a frets and bridge calculator on the Stewmac site but it does assume you are using a standard Fender P-bass bridge How I do it is slightly different to what you say. If I have at least 4mm adjustment of the saddles, I wind the G saddle to the very front and place that at the scale length, knowing that it will wind back maybe 1mm but that the bass strings will be able to wind back at least 4mm (the bottom E is usually at least 3mm back from scale length - but can be more. However, the G will never be in front of the scale length but often isn't much further back than scale). If I have more limited saddle movement, then I would wind the G to the front and place it 1mm max back from scale length. Hope this helps and anyone who disagrees please do chip in!
This is about what I do. IMHO it's a matter of trying to get it that the G saddle isn't so far forward as to be a touch "unstable", but still have enough travel on the E saddle to not totally compress the spring, or worse. Having just measured 4 basses, the saddle of the G sting is pretty consistently 34" from the bridge side edge of the nut.
13.
That's your own fault for sorting out my neck via PM lol Thanks again BTW
I KNOW!! I'm really kicking myself here.... (not)
14. I've only ever broken 1 - a Rotosound G string - straight out of the packet. Never played. it snapped getting it up to tension. The pain was it took Rotosound over a month to decide to send me 1 replacement string!
15. Mrs G is amazing. In the lounge I've got: A standing rack with 5 basses. I have had 7 basses there. I've got 2 basses in bits, under the sofa and next to the dining table Tools laying around Cans of nitro and contact cleaner on the dining table. A Bass neck leaning against the window sill drying with it's finish. Last night I was using Nitromores stripper to strip varnish off a neck - in the kitchen sink. Mrs G loves my Streamer Stage 1, and the Thumb. She never stops me buying a bass (sometimes I wish she would!) Our spare room has loads of bass cases in there and a couple of spare of combos, a guitar and a bass from another BCer. Mrs G is happy like this! She's actually looking forward to the SE Bass Bash! Can't wait to meet Herbie Flowers; he's one of her heros. Mrs G is a pianist - doesn't play bass. I can't believe it.
16. Calling people like that "engineer", is an insult to real engineers. You can buy cheap plugin devices that you put in a socket that will tell you if there's an earth fault. It's not fool proof, but it's a start.
17. Why not post a picture. At least we cna then give a second opinion.
18. I would try the bass and all other accessories (pedals ect) with another amp. My guess is that will help point out that the problem is the amp.
19.
They changed the formula of Nitromores. It's rubbish now.
Yes, I used some last night. It's ot as thick as it used to be. It did the job I was wanting to do, but what I was doing was light stuff.
20. Are you sure it's fret buzz. Listen carefully for something else giving a vibration buzz. I've known other things like tuners to give annoying buzzes.
21. Stars & Stripes Autumn Leaves Happy Birthday Bach Scarborough Fair Yes, I have a few. But that's what I play on bass. I know.. it's not what bass is about but I never really got that.
22. James, I'm sure we all knew what you meant about sharing the data really. No worries.
